I was a boy of 14 when I sat in a movie theatre in 1973 watching JCS with friends, Now, fifty years later, this is such a sweet, poignant and emotional performance to watch just as much for me personally as it obviously was for Yvonne, Ted and Barry to perform professionally. Thank you to the uploader and platforms like RU-vid for making such moments possible.
The embrace of Ted as he holds hands with Yvonne and Barry is beautiful. A long long friendship that had been tested in the fire and still holding true. Thank you Jesus
Toured with this show for a year and a half . 8 shows a week. This was the song that got me everytime, night after night. Neeley was an amazing singer.
@lovesrock100 oh yes. Nearly the entire cast would watch from the wings during "Gethsemane". Night after night he hit those high notes. Very friendly and down to earth, but everyone was so in awe no one approached him, and he couldnt party afterward with the rest of us because he had to take care of himself. Very disciplined. I wish it had been possible to know him better. He remains a hero. Ive worked with many great actors and singers since. The were regular, normal people with skill and talent. Ted wasn't regular or normal. People used to bring their babies to be blessed by him after the show. He was uncomfortable with that but said a prayer to make the parents happy. I think we all sort of felt like he was Jesus. (People didnt ise profanity or tell dirty jokes around him and when he arrived at the theater, even when you didnt see him, you felt hos presence and the atmosphere changed.) I cant believe how long ago it was. Cant believe Im 62 now! Like it was yesterday.
@@jefolson6989 Wow Jeff, Thanks for sharing such a beautiful story....One can't help but wonder if he's the real deal incognito (smiling). Spreading the gospel through the entertainment business. Wouldn't that beat all? If not, I'm sure the real Jesus would be very honored how Ted honors him. Awesome, wonderful story you shared....Thanks truly. Sincerely, Kerrie
i agree. he's got the voice and he put the emotion into the songs that made you feel and understand where he (jesus) was feeling. all the actors in the 1973 movie were perfect in their roles. i can't imagine anyone else in those roles. what made it more amazing, was the fact that they were all novices (with the exception of barry dennen) in acting, especially in a movie.
Ted sembra proprio Gesù ha un volto e due occhi che irradiano una luce divina e credo non sia un caso che Ted sia al mondo con il compito di interpretare Gesù.
orionh3000 Sadly yes he has...September 26, 2017, only a few months after this. A few weeks after this performance (June 2017) he had fallen at his home and never recovered. :*(
Goodness, I miss all of them, too bad many already passed on. They still sang so beautifully. Can't believe JCS the movie is 50 years old this year. Yes, could we start again, please? 😌
So glad they got to get together again. I think this may have been been Barry's last performance with them. You are and will be missed Barry. RIP Barry 😢
You are correct. In an interview I did with Ted Neeley last year, he confirmed that this was Barry's final performance prior to his accident, that resulted in his death.
Didn't know about Barry two seconds ago, so sorry to hear. I've never seen talent like I've seen from this musical, from the whole cast, this has been my favourite musical or movie or pretty much my favourite media related thing ever and every time I'm going through a hard time I take a deep breath and watch some of my favourite clips from Jesus Christ superstar and I feel better. Its just so good. So incredibly good.
I love this. They're like family. It's awesome seeing Barry singing Peter's lines. I always loved this song and have been disappointed when it's not done in the live versions.
To perform this with such vigour and passion for nearly 40 years is a testament to the power and emotion that shines through the entire performance. It still gets me all these years later too.
I have wondered if Ted had been offered other roles like, say, Jean Valjean in Les Miserables or even Bob Cratchit in A Christmas Carol. He had a " blink & you'll miss it " role in Django Unchained.
I grew up with this movie/musical. when I turned 8, in 1974, they gave me a mono cassette player and I asked for the soundtrack to Jesus Christ Superstar, seen at the cinema the year before. I've seen the musical at least ten times..... thank you for the emotions you gave me. from Italy Massimo and family
The movie is one of my all time favorite memories from way back! Singing the songs with my cousin after we saw the movie, and playing the album over and over! She passed away a few years ago and I miss her. Oh how I wish we could start again please!
2:56 a kiss in time to last forever. Two artists showing love and appreciation for each other's craft and their work together, the legacy of the film version will last forever. It is something very special that can not be topped.
One of my all time favorite songs from the movie, every now and then I have a Craving? to hear the music, and thank the Lord for you tube, I can watch i whenever I want to or feel the need too... I Love Yvonne, I adore Ted, Man what a voice he's got ! He hasn't lost it at all...Glad to see they are still singing this on tour, I saw the movie when it first came out, bought the Original soundtrack, was able to take it to Jr High school, I know all the words to all the songs, Had a crush on you Ted Neeley...
I'm ballin' just like everybody else watching this clip. I grew up on the Ian Gillan version and the concept album and London performance. Had no idea Neely has been doing this for this long. Gillan will always be my favorite 'Jesus' performance but Neely has immortalized it for sure. Would love to know why this song wasn't in the original version. Did Rice and Webber add this later for the movie? One of the most beautiful songs ever written IMHO especially given the context of the story. I played Judas in a college (Stephens College) production of JCSS in the early 80's and it is to this day the crowning achievement in my life. I currently live in KC, MO but go back to visit my hometown of St. Louis and I sing the whole musical, all parts, on the ride. The musical is timeless because the story is timeless.
I often wonder if Ted and Yvonne even know how influential they have been for millions of the worlds people to find Jesus? It was these songs that lead me to Catholicism as a young 12 year old boy. And now here I am an old man still listening and singing every word in my car to this religious experience from my cars cd player.
I was here 7 May First time I saw the musical, I hope and wish to see again. Jesus lives he was there too in Ted Neely I love this 3 humans very much plz come again to Netherlands
They dont write anything like this masterpiece anymore. This music/theme was/is peerless, wonderful to experience now, after decades of review. Thank goodness stripped naked, these people responsible for JCS did all that they did. How and why they did it compels us all as super stars, to go on, and carry on the still secularly sacred work and craft, (dancing with wolves while speaking truth to power) of jesus of nazareth, humanist.
I watched their 1973 movie again a few nights ago. I have lost count how many times I have watched it. And I will never tire of re watching it. I was in the stage production in my home town around the same year the movie came out❤
Oh, no doubt. Like most in the film, he was perfectly cast. My favorite Judas of all (w/respects to Murray Head). I have some of Carl's smooth jazz music in my collection...what a voice. And his acting in the film, like Mr. Neeleys, is incredible. Those two in the Garden scene...amazing. Their performances touched me in a vey powerful way. Hardly a year goes by that I don't view the film. As with the Beatles music...I'm a permanent fan for life.
i loves how he was peting them and kissing the woman on the hand it gave me butterflies because it was like * awww he is sooo nice * i just love when people are so nice to each other and smile to each other and ya U v U
Every single time I hear Ted it literally brings tears to my eyes..He even looks like Christ, with the voice of an angel. It's truly unbelievable.. All of them are amazing, but Ted is in his own hemisphere with his voice. Break my heart.
@@MissJensk1 Laughing...Good point considering Christ was dark skinned & not a white man. I guess what I meant was, he looks like the illusional image of a white Christ, if you know what I mean.
Wow, the Jesus guy looks really good for his age! One thing I always liked about him in the movie and I can still see it in him now, is his eyes. He played the role through his eyes which just look so compassionate! His gazes in the movie were just incredible!
I was there and this performance stirred me to tears. And it still does, knowing that Barry Dennen passed away not much later. I am so happy I went to see Ted Neeley perform the part of his life...
There's no proper words for this. The talent...! Amazing, how their voices are still so young. Didn't know Dennen passed away: his performance as Pilate was sheer perfection. My favourite voice among an outstanding cast.
This is brilliant, the great Ted Neely, Yvonne Elliman, and the wonderful and sadly missed Barry Dennen, I was in the school production of JCS, it is my favourite Lloyd Webber musical, our production had a young girl, Ann Findlow playing the part of Mary Magdalene, she sang like an angel, without fear of contradiction, her voice was beyond her years, this song is beautiful and poignant, I think we all wish, "Could we start again please" to anyone who may have not listened to this song by Sara Bareilles, do so, she has a beautiful voice.
Such an incredible & emotionally charged performance. To see these three fine performers together again & singing one of the more emotional songs from J.C.S, really added that extra special ingredient that transformed this performance from being good, to just phenomenal. God bless them all & sadly, RIP Barry Dennen.
