Local Detroit UPN50 broadcast-Dave Strader and Mickey Redmond calling the game. Steve Yzerman scores the game winner in the 2nd OT of game 7 against the Blues, sending the Wings to the 1996 conference finals vs the Avs.
Dave Strader's last call as the DRW primary announcer. He was great, him and Mickey were the best, RIP Dave Strader. So many great childhood memories narrated by him.
Anybody that's old enough to remember old time hockey will. Whether it be with PASS Sports or WKBD in Detroit, or whenever you'd see him on a national level. He, Mike Emerick, and Gary Thorne were my favorite hockey announcer voices.
My favorite part of this video is Bowman going out on the ice to celebrate with his players. Even though he already had like 7 rings, his passion and love for the game was as strong as ever. The Wings were so lucky to pick him up.
It’s not just that he turned it over, if you continue to watch he lazily skated back toward Yzerman. Could have easily had him at the blue line but he dogged it. In OT in game 7 no less.
@@craigkerr2764 Looking back, I don't know who it was but the defenseman almost turned it over to Gretzky in the Wings own end. That could have been disastrous, too. The excitement of that OT goal was all I remembered. That, and celebrating very quietly because my stick-in-the-mud roommate was already in bed because he had to work in the morning. 😂
+Andy Peraino they reacted in this way "60 footer, bingooooo! steve yzerman wins with a bullet! oh my! 60 foot slapshot by the captain! and the red wings are going to the conference final!" incredible reaction.
I always forget that Gretzky 'set up' this goal too. He really is 'The Great One.' Much thanks for touching the puck before Stevie Y puts on the wickedest slapper in playoff history. Jon Casey....never to be heard from again. yzerman 4e
All Detroit Red Wings fans remember where they were on May 17, 1996 at about 12:30am or so when Yzerman nailed the 60 footer for the series in game 7 of double overtime. I was 9 and not giving a rats ass if it was a school night or not. Crazy to think this was 20 years ago now. Classic goal and moment!!
Sitting in the JLA watching the game with my Uncle who was all worried about how mad my Mom was going to be due to how late it was but we were not leaving till it was over.
This was the first year I was really into hockey. I remember not being allowed by my mom to stay up and watch. My dad came and woke me up to tell me they had won after the goal. So awesome
BINGOOOO!!!! This game was insane, game 7 of the series with a super intense nail-biting back and forth scoreless battle where both Osgood and Casey were acting as brick walls, then out of nowhere Yzerman just goes with a blue line cannon blast that no one saw coming. This Red Wings team was truly beloved here in Detroit for this whole mid 90's into 2000's era when we won 3 Stanley Cups. Joe Louis must have come close to collapsing.
I remember watching this as a 23 year old. It was truly insane seeing a team so heavily favored to win this series mired in a game of inches for the right to move on or the heartbreak of going home. Even though the season would end 6 games later, this truly was a sight to behold, arguably one of the top 5 goals in Red Wings history.
I still get goosebumps watching this. I watched this with my Mother and our friend named Brian when this happen in 1996. I was 11. I use to live in Michigan so naturally I was a Wings fan, but also a huge Penguins fan. We were watching the whole game. I remember playing NHLPA 93 on Sega Genesis and Brian was telling me which players were still with there teams as of that game. (which would be nobody now since everyone is retired in that game except for Jagr) My mom died in 2001, and Brian died a few years later, I miss them very much and Ill never forget us screaming ontop of our lungs like kids (I was one though) And Steve Yzerman has been my favorite hockey player since 1995. My favorite numbers to wear are 19 and 64 (Tributes to Yzerman and my mom as it was her year of birth) So yeah, I just wanted to share that story. Where were you when you saw this happen?
I was about the same age, just got back from my grandfathers funeral was pretty down in the dumps but this game helped me feel better. I'm from Pittsburgh and we got beat by a similar goal by Tom Fitzgerald's Panthers in the next round but this moment was different. I don't hate the Wings like most people do here, they're a great franchise and Steve Yzerman is one of my all time favorites.
Red Wings vs Penguins was a dream come true to see back to back stanley cup finals. It was my former favorite team, vs the team that's always been my favorite (since they use to BOTH be my teams)
this will always hold a special place in my heart...i was 15, up late with my dad....watching this...not even a fan of either team just hockey...doesnt get any better.
What a game that was. I had season tickets back then. I was sitting just behind the net and I'll never forget how the puck was coming right at my eye level as it went in the net. My seats were normally in upper bowl but during intermission, someone was leaving and gave me their tickets. Who the hell leaves at overtime!
I rememeber this was a school night and my dad told me I had to go to bed. So I went downstairs to my room and listened on my headphones. When stevie blasted this one I lost it and went nuts !!!!
When i was 2, my dad told me he was holding me when watching this game. turns out he stood up and screamed at the TV and dropped me on my head. This was so classic though, i'm proud of that.
I think this shot was just so unexpected coming from The Captain that it caught the goalie off guard. Stevie F'kn Y scoring with a bar down slapper from the blue line was just incredible. Love that ' clank!' Remember watching this till way later with my buddies at our bosses house after work.
First time I've seen this version of that goal (The Bob Cole and Gary Thorne versions are well known). Fun fact- this was Strader's final game as the local Red Wings broadcaster. Conference Finals were not local and after this, he launched his career as a national announcer (ESPN/ABC, NBC, NBSCN)
How apropos, Strader's last call as the lead red wings play by play guy, after 11 years. Him and Mickey we're so good, taking nothing away from Ken Daniels.
I was 11 years old! I remember sitting at my Grandmas kitchen table, with my Uncle, Brother, and Sister watching this game on a little 20 inch color Tv. As soon as Yzerman scored I jumped for joy, and I started running around the house. Whats funny is My Uncle was a really big fat guy, and when Yzerman scored he jumped up. When he went to sit down, he sorta flopped down with a lot of momentum and it broke the chair in half. We started laughing so hard at him, he got so pissed off and chased us
I was only 9 when when this game aired, and I didn't watch much hockey then. (I got into it more when I moved in with my dad when I was 12). Still watching this, it gives me chills like I was there.
Mickey Redmond is far and away the greatest hockey announcer of his era. The only others I can tolerate are the Penguins radio and TV commentators (sacrilege, I know). I feel cheated every time I have to watch/listen to a hockey game with anyone else :)
One of the most finest moments of my childhood it was a school night and I was living downriver Detroit Hockeytown for real it was all about the wings! This my favorite Stevie Y goal!
The list of hall of famers (or will be HoF'ers) that played in this game included: Red Wings - Paul Coffey, Viacheslav Fetisov, Igor Larionov, Steve Yzerman, Dino Ciccarelli, Nick Lidstrom, and Chris Osgood (???); Blues - Wayne Gretzky, Al MacInnis, Brett Hull, and Chris Pronger Remarkable. Might never another game quite like this one.
Jon Casey! I had forgotten all about that guy! Also, I think I am the only person who liked these Blues sweaters...the red sash thing, took some getting used to, but I really like that shade of blue, far more than the current, more subdued shade they have now.
I was watching this live as well. As a Blues fan I was crushed. Threw my remote at the TV and it shattered into like 20 pieces. Hope I am not crushed again tonight.
Easily the greatest hockey game I've ever watched, for the sheer drama and ending. The crowd was on the edge and ready to erupt from the puck drop, and Stevie Y with a perfect shot. A great F-You to Keenan, who had cut Stevie from the World Cup team a few years previous.
I remember this, when it went into double OT I went to bed for if St.Louis scored I would not see it.I remember when Sergei Fedorov got robbed my Dad yelled OHHHH! which sounded like NOO! so I thought St.Louis scored but after a minute I thought my dad should be upstairs by know because Detroit lost but then I heard YESS!!!! And he rushed upstairs and said Detroit won they won!!!
1:59 the building seemed quiet. a second plus a loud ping later, i can barely hear the announcers. The whole building just exploded. Damnit i wish i was born earlier than 1992 so i could have been to or watched on tv more games like this. Steve yzerman is one of the best. no wonder they put this moment in that history will be made commercials.
great to see the UPN broadcast, along with the CBC broadcast. remember, ESPN's broadcast was blacked out in the Detroit area due to the local station broadcasting! Now would love to hear Bruce Martin's crazy call from the radio.
We didn't have cable so we listened to this on the radio. When Steve scored that goal, I remember it got so loud, the crowd, you had trouble hearing the announcers. Without touching the volume knob it woke up people in the next room over.
Dave Strader , Mickey Redmond , Ray Lane,Bruce Martyn,Paul Woods and Bud Lynch The voices of my childhood... Was so bummed out when I heard Strader was going nationally...... He was one of the greats RIP Dave Strader 😔
As GREAT as this goal was, my heart always went out to John Casey. Just by his reaction, you can tell he was heart broken and knew he should have saved that one.
#19 Will always be loved in Detroit. Stevie all of here in Detroit miss you already, we all wish you the best of luck to you down in Tampa. As much as we love Lidstrom Stevie will always be THE CAPTAIN..
Fucking Gretzky...Great one or not, I lost all hero worship for him for coughing it up in the neutral zone. I actually had the neighbors call the cops because they thought there was a fight going on, my roommate and I were yelling and screaming at the tv. Someday Blues fans, someday!... LGB!
I was at that game. I left early (after the 1st OT) because I had to be at work at 2am the next morning. It was over by the time I got to my car (Yes, I know, I'm an idiot). I remember thinking that Colorado should be an easy series. Boy was I wrong.
Great quality. Is this from a vhs? I have this on dvd in the greatest games set but that uses the ESPN broadcast. Too bad they couldn't put both versions on one disc (plus radio) where you could just switch between them on your remote.
hahahaha when fetisov gave him a bear hug at the end. I love this call. Gary Thorne's was classic but this was perfect because for about twenty seconds dave and mick acted like fans and started going nuts (mostly mickey)
Steve Yzerman's no. 19 was initially supposed to be retired from the Canada men's national ice hockey team as well as the Detroit Red Wings, but during the last winter Olympics no. 19 actually came our of retirement and was used for Jonathan Toews...
Gretzky, as the GM of the Canada team in 2006, decided to not allow anyone to wear 19 for those games. When Yzerman himself ran Canada in Vancouver four years later, he "unretired" 19.
