The Open looks good. I think they are going to force Samsung to step up their game. I think one other thing that will give Samsung an advantage that I didn't hear you say anything about is trade in deals. Samsung always has deals so that $100 price difference is negligible to meaningless.
Actually, one plus is offering some pretty good trade-in deals. They are offering $200 on any cell phone in any condition. In addition, I checked the value for a trade in of my 11 and they are offering nearly $800. Although, I love my 11 and I have no interest in trading it. I want to use this phone for a few years. It's probably the most satisfying device I've ever owned.
@@zevahc3928 yeah, the trade-in deals don't look bad. Of course, I'm really only interested in factory unlocked devices. I don't know what the carriers will eventually offer.
The main issues with oneplus open is no direct carrier support, historically poor software support, unknown warranty support. You add all those things up and it's essentially a no-go. You won't see anything reactive by Samsung for at least 2 generations since that's how long it usually takes to make significant design changes.
It is. It's a beast. I wouldn't trade it for any other phone out there right now. The Open has a brighter display, lower cost for the same storage, the outside display is not freakishly narrow, the predictive text for swiping and texting is a lot better as well, also, the hinge on the open has about half the moving parts on its hinge compared to the Z Fold and the Pixel Fold, etc.
@@powgee22 , cheap brand. If I were you I would look up the difference between cheap and inexpensive and then use the right word. One Plus is not a cheap brand. It does tend to be inexpensive. if you're saying it's cheap because it has midrange phones that are inexpensive, like the Nord, then I guess by that logic, so does Samsung and most other phone makers. Which would mean they are cheap as well. The One Plus open uses one of the best processors that there is right now the 8 Gen 2. It has 16, not 12 GB of RAM. It has 2,800 nits at peak brightness, much higher than Apple's, Samsung's or Google's phones. It also costs hundreds less for the same storage of 512 GB. I have the phone and have had it for a couple of days. There is nothing cheap about it. It is definitely a high end premium feeling phone. The Z Fold 5 is way too narrow and almost unusable. The crease in the Z Fold 5 and the Pixel Fold is right there in your face, whereas the crease in the OnePlus Open is barely noticeable. I have played around with the other two and they are not nearly as nice as the Oneplus Open. Just something to think about before you pass judgement on the Open.
I received my OnePlus open, and I am really impressed. The previous OnePlus (8 - 10) devices always felt like they lacked something (camera, wireless charging, boring design). Even though the open doesn't have wireless charging, it has a lot more going for it. I was skeptical buying a folding phone but I'm happy I did.
Since all reviewers do not have the ability to assess long term durability or software update reliability we only get a 50% of a review comparison. Also since the bulk of people get phones through a carrier it really benefits Samsung. Also the crease usually gets worse over time with most phones except samsung stays the same over time.
Samsung is not in trouble 😂... people buy their phones also for the software what it runs on it and Samsung One UI for me is unbeatable. I like android and I wanted to try so many times different brands, but when I checked them in real life..just felt like way behind what samsung offers. People could also change from Apple if they only would look for the form factor as all phones look the same (exept foldables) but they still stick with IOS.
I still love my Fold 5 but man, with each passing day and video I watch, I'm slowly waning in my desire to hang on. OneUI and Dex are probably the two things... Do you think that Samsung will do something better/major with the 6? OnePlus has definitely come out swinging (well, I mean, it's not their first rodeo but their first US entry). For some reason, I can't seem to see the Fold 5 as an option to trade in for the OnePlus (yes, I did consider it hehe). I love my Sammy but man, this device is just something else...
I'm just curious when people bring up DeX as a benefit of Samsung's Fold phones and whether those people are actually using it even periodically or they just use that as a unique feature of the Samsung Fold phones knowing that it really has no equal on other Fold phones. Genuinely curious here.
@@ArthurZakaryan23 I think for most it's a "only Samsung has this feature" thing. Some do use it regularly. I have and do but personally occasionally but does come in very handy at times.
Oppo and Oneplus merge. So it's essentially the same company now. OPPO has the same phone call OPPO N3 fold. So it would make sense for the pen to work.
Everyone's on OP 🥜... them things will soon start breaking apart 😅 nothing like the z fold in the foldable market. I'd take samsungs software, hardware and reliability any day.
I have now both z fold 5 and oneplus open lol. I just dont get why samsung is in trouble when they have more features than oneplus open. The only advantages that open have is it has a bigger screen and bigger battery. I bet if samsung has the same screen as the open then people would get samsung. Lets see how durable, compatible and reliable open is before we say samsung is in trouble lol.
Pssssss... Oppo find n2 (the previous generation) had a Bluetooth pen. If you import it, it works on this phone! And on both screens!!! Major L to Samsung, ngl.
...umm...WE DO REMEMBER THAT THE PURPOSE OF THE OUTSIDE SCREEN ISN'T TO GIVE YOU A BIG SCREEN. IT DOES WHAT IT'S SUPPOSE TO AND WHEN YOU REALLY NEED TO MULTI-TASK AND ALL THAT JAZZ, YOU OPEN TO THE BIGGER SCREEN 🤦🤦♀️Who will buy a folding phone that they don't need to open? 🤔🤔🤔 just saying
Had the fold4 for a couple of months but got rid of it because of the front screen and now here in Australia we are finally getting our 2nd foldable, the OPPO Find N3 so I’m excited 😊. Plus now that it also supports the OPPO find N2 pen it makes a perfect combo
Actually, the N3 and the OnePlus open are the exact same phone. It is just being released under two different names. I suspect that the open will have pen support in the Android 14 update.
Had the fold 3. Got rid of it after 3 months due to micro cracks in the center crease. Have been hesitant to buy another fold since. But I saw the one plus open and pre-order it. Hopefully, it doesn't have the same issue.
I hope Samsung don't change the form factor. I like how easy the phone is to use single handed when closed, and if i needed a bigger screen i just simply open it. Having a front screen the size of a normal phone is great but it doesn't encourage using the main display. Then people will just complain that they rarely open the phone and that the company should've just produced a normal/compact phone.
Bro can't even compare the crease on this to the pixel fold. The pixel crease is WAY worse. I literally can barely feel it on the open even when I try to find it. I've yet to even notice the crease on even a white background. It's a way better experience all the way around on this phone. I got the black one and it's sweeeet
Id like to think i inspired the idea for this video by my question on the live stream the other night lol. That may not be the case, but thats what im telling myself
Have them both... Hardware on Open is way better, Samsung software is marginally better. If the Open had stylus support and wireless charging, Open would be better hands down. Since the Open doesn't have those two things, it makes it a close one. I still choose the Open overall.
The Open actually does have stylus support. Someone on reddit tried it with the Oppo pen on both the inner and outer displays and it worked perfectly. So far the Open is impressing me much more than the Z Fold 5 I have here.
I have the Z fold and now in an eco system of Samsung. I like the OnePlus brand because I STILL have my OnePlus 7pro. Don't use it but it's on 12 and runs fine still. But it's Samsung for me and I want to see how those creases are after about 4 to 6 months. Great video as usual though.😊
Funny how Americans react when they get a taste of a premium Chinese phone. Leagues better. Now compare a Xiaomi 13 ultra to an s23 ultra and get your mind blown.
This phone is incredible. No real drawbacks. So I'm going to nit pick. - No Wireless charging is not a real negative because fast charging and the 4800mah battery are more than worth the trade. - No Snap dragon 8 g3. We always want the latest and greatest especially in a $1700.00 flagship that will be kept for 3-4 years. I would have wanted the gen3 chip being that it is tangibly faster with similar to better efficiency vs the gen2 and the gen3 chip is launching soon in other flagship devices. However gen 2 is no slouch in efficiency or performance - Camera Bump. While beautiful, its large and it's protrusion is a tad annoying, especially when you sit or lay it down. The stock case helps just a tad, but I'm most concerned about scratches and impacts damaging the lens or lens bezel. Everything else is top tier no complaints. I'm loving and enjoying mine more everyday.
I understood that the ONE+ open also has Active Stylus support. Then the choice is no longer difficult for me. I now have a Surface Duo 2 and because of the screen ratio, I never made the step samsung fold 5. the ONE+ open is already a bit closer and is much more interesting as an alternative to replace my Surface Duo 2.
I was gonna get a Oneplus Open except I couldn't pass up the trade in deal of $1,000 for my current phone for the fold 5. Only if T-Mobile offered the Oneplus open
It feels like a lot of people are saying that "Samsung is resting on their laurels" and although some of that may be true, there is more to product management and product delivery when it comes to such a big company with many different products. Samsung practically did nothing new ever since the Note came out in 2014 for a long time. They just refined their flagship "bar" phones a little bit each year. However, behind the scenes, they were working on their flexible OLED display to eventually come out with the Flip and the Fold. Samsung also pioneers displays for many, many other phones and devices as well. So yeah, it may seem like nothing is happening on the surface but they still dedicate time and resources into innovating something new. It could be that there is not much they can really do with their current Flip and Fold aside from making small changes here and there to stay on top of the competition, or they can use that resource to create something completely new again in 4-5 years.

Ehh ,but how's the UI on the one plus??? Also the crease on the fold has definitely gotten better after each iteration! I don't know why nobody notices that. Literally pull out the fold 2,3,4,5 you'll understand that the crease has gotten much better.
I'm not sure about the newer One Plus phones, but back in the day I really wanted a One Plus, so I bought the One Plus 7 plus. I loved the hardware, but hated the software experience. A lot of lag, all kinds of problems, so that's what holds me back from buying a One Plus again.
Diving in and discussing: " being a generation older , I missed growing up " fiddling with tech . I work 6 days/wk still. Can you explain in what scenario you would need 16 gb of ram vs 12 gb? . ...Also , I took your advice and opted for a zfold3 vs a zfold4 or 5 . ...They are too similar and $650 was worth the " dipping a toe" into the foldable experience. ( I bet the zfold6 is wider n kicks ass). I was disappointed in the open. My feeling. And , never buy 1st generation - too new . So , I'll pass on the open and red headed step child. ... whose Janelle...not that chubby blonde from my college days.
The Open does support a stylus but only the OPEL2201 OPPO Pen which is hard to get in the US. Hopefully OnePlus will release one for the US maybe with a handy case like the Zfold has.
Samsung is in double trouble with BBK Electronics because the OnePlus Open and the Oppo Find N3 are basically the same exact phone where OnePlus is the sister smartphone company to the Oppo company.
OnePlus for me..Ever since LG was the risk taker and now there not doing phones no more and Huawei is not in The US market no more Samsung is chilling and just doing what apple doing and that's to much of nothing.. you spend all all this money with Samsung Google and you only get the phone and USBC cable..smh But anyway yeah OnePlus Fold. I think Oppo version might have a little more to there's im about to check into. Thank for the video bro.. I more curious now more then ever on what other phone companies is out there but not getting the shine cause Samsung, Apple and Google got the U.S on Lock . Can you do a video on what other phone companies you can get in the U.S?
Looks like a good phone, but I really don't think samsung has a lot to worry about. If oneplus had invented the folding phone idea rather than playing follow the leader and just one upping samsung features, sure. But that's not how the folding phone market has played out. Now oneplus's cards are out on the table, I'm pretty sure samsung will take note and adjust easily. Good that there's competition though. Oneplus camera bump looks horrendously ugly IMO, and if the overall thickness doesn't include it, it should. Besides that, if you want a great camera there's these things called cameras you can buy... I've never understood the camera on a phone fixation people seem to have. Crease is really a non issue for me on the fold 5. The only thing I care about is the screen longevity, which I guess only time will tell us about. In any event, samsung won't be losing too much sleep over the oneplus I'd imagine.
I have Fold 4 and it fine. But this Oneplus Open I really like the outside screen. The outside screen from Samsung is too small. In 2 year I will change my Fold 4. look like Oneplus nailed in this first generation and Pixel have time enough to improve. Just It will great to see Nothing Fold Phone. Fingers cross. Foldable Phones will rule the world. Let go.
I must be a total weirdo cus i absolutely LoVe the camera's on 1+ the color science is just beautiful to me im so upset that T moble isn't carrying any of the NEW Flagship phones my 1+9pro display is all scratched up from a drop now ima save up & get the 10pro or the 11 after Xmas for the cameras thats how much i like them. Weird O alert 😂 I understand 😂
Speaking off display smudges... my pixel 8 pro is perfect, flawless, except.... I have a few of these spots that wont go away. If you clean the screen thoroughly, they arent visible for a few min but then reappear ecactly as they were. My p8pro is brand new. Do you have any experience with this?
On the contrary, samsung fold 5 sells cheaper by about $600 where I live. That itself is a no brainer to get the fold 5. Also thanks to Samsung's solid trade in programme.
I think OnePlus avoiding being carrier subsidized is a great mistake. If they want to become mainstream, they have to appeal to all financial sectors. I've been with OnePlus since the 6T, and still to this day when I show someone my phone they asked me who makes that phone? No one in America knows oneplus
Samsung dominated the Android landscape for many years. They got complacent and lazy. Updating is not upgrading. They are all about being the first to launch. Not about launching the best product. They aren't innovators anymore. In fact, they are just boring. Boring design >Boring Colors. They need to get hungry again. Until then, I'm buying Chinese phones: OnePlus, , Xiaomi, Oppo, Huawei. They are better phones. Looks better. Better design and engineered. And a lot cheaper.
Oh Sammy Sammy… You’re in for big trouble…The OnePlus Open has even support for an s-pen from OPPO… You really need to step up next year with the Fold 6…
Hey. I got a problem I hope you can help me with. I bought a 7a for my mom and me and dad have the 6a and 7. We all got android 14 when it first came out. Me and dad updated ours but mom never updated hers. Soo the other day I was out with my mom and I was like give me ur phone and I'll update to 14. Well when I went to her update the 14 update was nowhere to be found. It said android 13 and when I click to update it says it's up to date even when I keep on hitting the update. So the 14 update that was on her phone has went away. Should I just wait or what. I can put beta 14 on there and then not update that and hópefully it will automatically go to stable after 3 months or whatever. Her security is September as well so I dunno what's going on. Any thoughts?
One plus will never be real competition to Samsung reason being who do you know buys a one plus or even know what😅 it is? Just because you cram more features in a phone doesn't mean it will sell, look at LG. I'm sure it'll sell in Asia but not very much in America.
I don't like that monster dot camera array, it's gaudy! Not a camera guy so even if it takes better pics, it is embarrassing to be seen holding....Since my son is months older than you , that " Janelle " comments is out of my vernacular.
Too soon to say. I would like to wait few more month to see durable, battery life, software update, speed test, drop test... in real life, not just on many YT "talk show" channels in the last couple day.
Oppo Find N2 pen can be used for the OnePlus Open or Oppo Find N3 and it can be used for external and internal screen as well as other Bluetooth function. Maybe you can review this and try this in an update and review
Samsung pretty much had a monopoly in the usa in terms of the fold market for 4 years and just got lazy, until finally now the Google fold and now oneplus.
I saw that the stylus pen from Oppo works flawlessly with it. Both screens support it. If you can import one, then you'll have a strong comparison going.
I have both devices, if the fold had the one plus outer screen and zoom camera it would be damn near perfect. I like the open alot but they missed the mark on a few things so im returning mine. The firdt two items are 1000% dealbreakers for me No 5g in canada on rogers and no option for it in settings No wifi calling Cannot turn off screen split mode in settings, email and messages Cannot alter home screen layout rows and columns Have to have the same layout on inner and outer screen Gallery app is useless cant have albums Cant watch you tube on outer screen with it open Camera bump is really intrusive..way to big No 8k video
Probably not a popular opinion but I actually think I prefer the look and size of the Pixel fold but if I had to pick one it would be the Galaxy fold 5.
No, there not why don't you address the shortcomings of this phone. Typical Samsung hate, yet they are the ones who have driven to concept. Remember when all of you so-called tec reviewers mocked samsung for the first big screen phones. One plus has a lot to do yet!
Do me a favor. Go to the store and buy a dictionary and find the word “moron”, and then use your crayons and write your name next to the definition. And then put your phone in the garbage disposal.
I like the one plus open better the green color is beautiful and I like the circle camera shape different than what we are used to at this point great job from one plus and the first version Watch out 🤔
MKBHD mentioned that his phone already has screen damage, and it's as simple as folding and unfolding it. Some testers I watched on RU-vid said that the hinge of the OnePlus isn't as premium as the Fold 5. They found that testing, opening, and folding both devices yielded similar results, for example, the 180-degree angle, but the OnePlus didn't seem as sturdy.
I see what you mean. You will basically get to use a Z Fold 5 for very little money in the mean time because nearly all of the cost will go towards the Z Fold 6 with the trade in. And most likely the Z Fold 6 will be similar aspect ratio as the Oneplus Open.
The thing is it has only just come out so nobody can judge durability yet. It doesn't have proper water protection which is a big deal. I was surprised at how much I was okay with the smaller front screen on the fold 5. Samsungs text prediction is much better then apples. This is my first foldable coming as a long term apple user and it's been tough to migrate onto android but I am very impressed with the fold 5.
The Open looks like the best foldable I've seen yet. The only real gripes I would have is the fact that they released it late in the year with Android 13. If they had waited a few weeks and released it with Android 14 you could make the most of it's four years of OS updates. In addition, a slight delay in its release could have afforded them the time to give the device the Gen 3 chipset. This used to be the same strategy when they offered the T variance later in the year. On the other hand, have they done that it would have probably coincided too closely with the release of the 12. Still, if I were interested in a folding device this would be my choice.
@@TechOdysseyI've learned that I have to test out stuff, because, surprisingly, even people within the company may not know. I worked at several tech companies in SV during the late 90s and was always surprised about stuff we weren't made aware of.
@@MrK1976 Don't know if it's more time using it but if something, the software. And believe it or not I love to change themes and there is none on Oxygen.
