The Z1 is a great bike, but there is definitely room for improvement. it lacks the horsepowerof it's middleweight contemporaries and the torque of its legacy cousins. The upside is it takes very well to modification which will land it nicely in the middle of the rest of the field once modified. HP Quoted is the approximate of manufacturers claimed power.

Mr. Mason, just my two cents- I couldn’t agree more with your perspective, just want to add some context- I’m 57, had many bikes, made mods along the way. Some were beneficial and others unnecessary; the mods you’ve made were more along the lines of what the factory probably should have done. I know because I’m in year 2 with this same bike, the Z900RS Cafe and have had the same mods except for the sprokets, for 4K of the current 6K miles on it- it has become the perfect motorcycle with those mods and doesn’t NEED anything else, but that’s up to the individual owner. I’d like to add that it’s a hobby of mine to go into Motorcycle shops and look at the current models of all manufacturers and one thing that hits me over and over again is that the quality of the components, the fit and finish throughout the entire machine is exceptional and personally I can’t find a bike better in that regard. I just don’t see any corners cut on this thing. So the machine is worth any modification made to it that helps it perform at least equally in its class. so again thank you for sharing your wealth of information. It’s much appreciated. Respectfully submitted.

I am not kidding when I say that I find something new to fall in love with all over again each time I ride this motorcycle. And even in light of other bikes that may come out that would either carry the aesthetic as well but with more power or some other combination of attributes that would make the motorcycle subjectively or objectively better, I would not trade the Kawasaki for that motorcycle. I would simply save up the money and buy the motorcycle in addition to the callie. And truth be told I would probably give that hypothetical motorcycle up before I would let go of my kawasaki. That's how much I like that bike now

I go back to before the 1972 Z1. One of my current bikes is a 2024 Kawasaki Z900RS SE and find the stock bike to have more enough power for the street. Later this fall I'll take to the drag strip and see how it compares to my R9T and Thruxton R just for informational purposes. I've taken the Thruxton R to the Bonneville Salt Flats several times and with some gearing and aerodynamics tweaks it ran 151 mph. Stock the Thruxton R and R9T ran around 133 mph and I expect the Z900RS SE would dust them as stockers at top speed. Both the R9T and Thruxton R are mid to high 11 second quarter mile bikes with me on them. I expect the Z900RS will have similar ETs & speeds, but should be easier to launch than either the Thruxton R or R9T.

The Cb and the gsx are not really true retros and are more streetfighter looking than anything. You don't buy these bikes for the power. If thats the goal there the wrong bike for that. People buy these bikes as they have become the king of the modern retros, not king by power but king because they remind us of another time in our lives and there legacy of yesteryear.

As it pertains to the segment, pretty much anybody that has reviewed or ridden the modern Neo retro style bikes will call them as such because of one defining feature which is a single large headlight. At least that's what seems to define the category. The z900rs is really nothing more than a z900 with a different headlight, and body kit from an aesthetic point of view. Performance of course is a different story. same for the xsr. As it relates to the mt-09. But called by whatever name is preferred, I do greatly care for the Neo retro style far more than the insect looking Street Fighter aesthetic that has come to Define whatever that genre of motorcycle is supposed to be called. Furthermore, if somebody wants the writing experience from yesteryear there are plenty of motorcycles that offer that up. As mentioned the Legacy motorcycles from Triumph set the bar extremely high for that type of writing experience, the Kawasaki z900 is the most true to form of the retro, not to be confused with Neo retro I suppose motorcycles, at least it has four cylinders. So the sound is there and the look is obviously there too. And that's why I bought mine and actually look for excuses to ride it.
