Former NFL QB Kurt Benkert breaks down the tape on Jets QB Zach Wilson. What does Zach Wilson do that other NFL QBs can't? See the tape the same way NFL quarterbacks do when they're studying.
This depresses me. As a Jets fan, I've believed in a QB we drafted more than this kid. His talent jumps off the screen. The way we've mismanaged his development, and the outside noise from fans media (so much so, that if you support Zach, they call you a Zach Wilson Truther, its so toxic) I also think his best move is to leave us. But I guarantee he becomes a pro bowler elsewhere.
Zach has a quick release, a strong arm, and throws incredibly well off-platform. I think you’re alluding to it: when he is hesitant I think he “short-arms” his throws and his release point is all wrong. But when he’s just using muscle memory he can just drill it. Personally I think he needs to get away from the Jets and to a team with a good QB coach. If you go back and watch his Pro Day (PD) - I’ve watched it at least twice - it is mesmerizing. It’s why he went two. But get him on a team where he’s comfortable and maybe he shines. I’m a Tua fan mostly because he is really accurate on short-to-intermediate throws and he has one of the quickest releases ever. But maybe a team like Miami could win the Super Bowl with a confident Zach Wilson because Zach has a strong arm and could hit Tyreek downfield at 60+ yards.
Great points. Guys like Tua and Brock are top 10 QBs, they deserve their accolades. Imagine those two on the Jets, asked to play like scared game manager QBs? Now imagine Zach with the Dolphins or 49ers. You can definitely debate the ceiling of this scenario. Zach might not be better than Tua, but we'd definitely see a better version of Zach than we do now. I hope Zach figures into the Jets future plans, but if not I wish him luck. He's got the tools to be a dangerous QB, and despite his shortcomings he's always worked hard to improve.
Thanks for the breakdown. Wish there was some way the Jets could hang on to him after AR retires. Wouldn't blame him for wanting to get out of NY after the way he's been handled & the flak he's taken from impatient Jets fans. Cap restrictions would likely make it difficult too.
Really enjoy your videos man. I like how you streamline the info, make your point, and trust the audience… Selfishly, I would love Zach to stay in NY, but for his sake, I think Seattle would be a great fit. Get some veteran coaching and eventually compete with Geno. I think he has a somewhat similar skill set/play style to Russ, who they obviously did well with
Excellent break down! Been watching ZW since high school. He's an absolutely incredible talent. What do you think about a trade to the Rams as QB2 and taking the reigns when 9 retires?
The problems I've had with Wilson since he was at BYU: *)Tendency to stare down his primary read *) Rhythm problems when moving beyond primary read *) Mechanics fall apart under pressure *) Over-reliance on "hero ball" *) Rarely looks to throw when on the move I've never once questioned his arm, but it's the finer points of being a QB where he has his biggest issues. Combine the Jets lack of receivers (outside of G. Wilson) and their poor offensive line, and you had a recipe for failure. Then again, I rated him as a 4th-5th round developmental option, and not the high pick everyone billed him as. Being overdrafted and starting early killed his chances of developing into something.
get him an OL not a practice team OL and he will look better than Trevor Lawerence, he outplayed Mahomes, Hurt and was AFC player of the week but he will never be good enough for the NY Jets. I agree have him leave and become all pro somewhere else! The Jets will destroy Rogers other Achilles tendon !!!!
