I've been on the Graz-Ljubljana route it was wonderful. Most of the Slovenian rail stock is very soviet in appearance, separated into compartments, very nice. Ljubljana is very high on my list of favourite cities, if I lived in the center, I'd even prefer it over my hometown of London.

I have passed many times across Slovenia whilst travelling to Hungary, but if I'd ever travel there again (which I will since it's a very beautiful country, and I'd love to see the area of Koper, Izola, and Piran, which are bilingual towns), I'd travel by bus, either Flixbus, Nomago, or Arriva Slovenia, because sometimes trains on certain lines tend to be really slow in Slovenia. Besides, Croatia will be adopting Euro 💶 very shortly. Whilst as for the Slovenian Pendolino, it is exactly like the Trenitalia ETR460 or 465 sets that now are operating in Greece under TrainOSE (owned by Trenitalia)

You may have been given a wrong impression of Maribor by the buildings around the station, it is in fact a beautiful town/small city, with less than 100,000 inhabitants. I lived in Kapfenberg in Austria in the 90s, it's about 30 miles north of Graz. The scenery and buildings in Slovenia are very similar to there, indeed half of Slovenia was the same region Styria, prior to the dissolution of Austria-Hungary. I often drove down to the border with Slovenia which took less than an hour, to fill up the tank and buy cheap cigarettes and booze with the money I'd saved, and went to look around Maribor a few weekends.
Here’s Simon. Yes I wish I’d have had more time there tbh and thinking back, I reckon I may have had a better time splitting my journey at Maribor than Graz (I didn’t think the Ibis in Graz was up to much tbh - probably the worst one I’ve stayed in). Good excuse to go back 😊👍
Thanks Colin, yes once I got the Zagreb - Zidani Most leg out of the way it was very efficient but I’m glad I left myself plenty of time for that first change of train. Also, I do think that first leg was easily the most scenic 👍
Cheers Sean, yep I’m trying to keep the channel quite varied, though some modes of transport seem to do better than others! If I was in it for the money (which I’m not), I think I’d just constantly film coach trips but tbh, I just enjoy travelling on all types of stuff and sharing it with others. All the best, Mark 😊👍
4:27 on the train is marked HZPP - HZ stands for Croatian Railways. 14:23 SZ does not mean series, but it is an abbreviation for Slovenske Železnice (Slovenian Railways) - 20:33 logo on red Siemens is clearly visible and this is written on all our Slovenian trains. The trains with which you travel from Zidani Most through Maribor to Austria are the so-called "working trains", so they are not so comfortable. There are also hinged tables or lifting tables on our trains. If they were not seen, they were dropped down - it just depends on where you sit.😉
13:20 Not sure about this one, but it could be that there on the plan the numbers do not represent platforms, but rails. Normally it is written as Rail 1 which is always just on the stations side and then Rails 2 and 3 are on platform one. Now since Zidani Most doesn´t have more than 1 platform the only solution is that the numbers represent rails, because otherwise at least platform 3 would make no sense what so ever. We really do differentiate between Rails and Platforms and the first rail at the train station does not count as a platform because it isn´t one :)
I think they’d been having a bit of a stressful time and travelling with like 5 cases of luggage, I mean that’s just crazy! One piece of cabin-sized luggage and a small rucksack does me for a couple of weeks 😊👍
Maribor railway station was once the most important aspect of the city. It was build when they built the Vienna - Trieste line or the Austro-Hungarian southern rail line. It made an economic boom in the city and placed it as one of the most important industry centres. However, it was bombed and fully destroyed by the allied powers during WW2. What you see now is a Yugoslav socialist station that well, is as you said, not very impressive.
Amazing mate I really enjoyed this! What an EPIC trip, and it all worked to perfection tbh. One point, on the ÖBB Desiro, there are power sockets. Look up above (yes they're stupidly placed!) 🙃🫡
