I have to say this, but I suspect I'm not the only one to feel this way. Jorphdan is one of the most underrated content creators who produces GREAT videos for dnd nerds. Especially for us chronic DMs and those of us who grew up and love Forgotten Realms lore, your videos on various aspects of the lore on monsters, cities, and regions in absolutely invaluable, particularly when you consider the current edition which lacks the mass of this lore, at least thus far. For those who agree, we thank you.

I'm so happy your talking about Zakhara!!! I made a Far Traveler character from Zakhara a long time ago and really liked the setting. I got practically interested in the Ten Thousand Gods religion as it wasn't like any other religion I had come across in D&D before. I'm really glad that your putting a spotlight on this unique setting as it defiantly deserves more love. Here's hoping we might officially get a full expansion of it in 5e one day!

I adore this setting already! A wonderful pastiche of medieval Arab and Persian cultures with small dollops of the great Arab philosophers: Al-Ghazali, Avicenna, and Averröes plus a kind of monotheism. Faerûn is hardly a mere reflection of European medieval cultures, but it’s great to see a setting so different from say Cormyr, the epitome of European fantasy. Does Fate have a similar role as Ao?
@Jorphdan
@Jorphdan 5 лет назад
good question. I think Fate is more of a power concept, where Ao is a singular entity. I like to think of Fate as the force in star wars? It's that force that affects us all, controls destiny, and our lives. It's just fate!
@Jorphdan
@Jorphdan 5 лет назад
from the FR Wiki: Fate may cast down the mightiest sultan or raise up the meanest beggar. None can agree on her nature, whether the mother of the gods or an elemental force. All acknowledge her power, however. In Dungeons & Dragons game terms, Fate is not given statistics, spells, or priesthoods as are most deities.

Jorphdan Thank you for clarifying! I really appreciate you responding to my comment too!

I believe there are various things that somewhat imply Fate could be a similar sort of being, or that some scholars speculate as such, though the nature of Fate is left very much ambiguous. It is at the same time usually spoken of as a more metaphysical or representative being of the forces of fate as Jorphdan says and also sometimes personified to some degree as a woman, though in modern Zakhara, it is rare to see her depicted in images or statues as such (I would imagine because of a concern about idolatry, as it is usually decried regarding 'barbarian' cultures surrounding Enlightened Zakhara, though I don't think that's specifically stated), though there are some examples of this existing in more ancient ruins, with at least one example that I can think of in Ruined Kingdoms. She does definitely not grant spells to worshipers, much as Ao doesn't. Though unlike Ao, she is notably said to influence events when called upon occasionally by any character, priest or no, as a unique mechanic inherent to adventures in the Land of Fate, though the mechanical odds are somewhat skewed in the favour of priests of enlightened gods. For a regular individual, calling upon Fate actually has a generally higher chance of turning Fate against them, though the vast majority of the time such pleas are simply ignored.

Sadly, I fear the current state of woke WotC will never allow this to be made. It would represent a people, and no matter how culturally accurate they make this fantasy place, there will be a very vocal group that will beat down Wizards door to put a stop to it.

Always nice to hear about Zakhara. I made a great deal of homebrew for personal campaigns of mine based on it. It has a great deal of information despite it all being buried in 2e books. The focus on the house of the loregiver here is strange to me since it's a fairly minor part of the setting, though it is also something I found very interesting when I read about it in the book on Huzuz, so it's an understandable curiosity to highlight. Zakhara does have a lot of touches like that. I'd look forward to hearing more of your descriptions on Zakharan religion or society if you make more videos on it, since there's quite a bit there. I would also love to see a modern book or adventure set in the setting, though I don't really expect it from WotC.

So am I having a speculation on how Zakhara seems to be viable trade location with Kara Tur trade despite Faerun having a neat non-Zakhara route? I mean like East Coast between Kara Tur and Faerun seems lucrative point. Zakharan and Kara-Tur, yeah, but the maps seem to allow easier overland and even oversea trade there without relying on Zahkara like historical Middle East (like having Egypt and Red Sea trade along with former Persia). Call me pedantic, but sometimes my geopolitics sense can tingle. Maybe issue of "stand alone setting fitted into Forgotten Realms at last minute".

It was at least mentioned in places in SCAG and as the origin of the Almiraj, so they are at least aware of its existence. I'm not holding my breath, but it'd be interesting to see. Tbh I'd have thought Chult wasn't all that salvageable in its previous state either.

Hey Jorphdan! Do you have access to any lore on Algorand & Yuirwood outside of "The Unapproachable East" 3.5e? I have a current 5e campaign set there and I'm curious about current events in the area! THX!

For Anglarond, I'd check the Forgotten Realms Campaign Guides, and the "Spellbound (Campaign Guide) 2e" For Yuirwood, the same Forgotten Realms Campaign Guides, and yeah looks like Unapproachable East has the most information.

someone told me, that originally al-quadim was not part of the forgotten realms setting, but that TSR merged them after 1995 or thereabout, since sales didn't go as planned, and thus keeping the setting independant was no longer possible.

I always loved the aesthetics of the arabesque, and Zakhara was great. I never got to play in it back in the day, since I never managed to get the books, but I did many, many years later (on ebooks, though), since the physical books seemed to be incredibly rare. I don't play D&D anymore, but it does sound appealing nonetheless.

I played in an Al-Qadim where my necromancer from Faerun became king of a nation of undead when he married and was gifted a sword named "Drinker of 1,000 Lives." His wife was more powerful at the time of marriage and cast a spell on him called lifeproof, pretty much making it to where the only thing that could actually kill him was poison or magic effects.

I ran that module updated for 5e somewhat recently to somewhat similar results for my players, though also to somewhat more dire fates for others (she used that same spell to hold a player's heart ransom while he made up for trying to steal from her by going on a quest). That particular city is a lot of fun.

If WoTC were to ever return to this setting, I really hope they remove all of the racist, orientalist crap from the setting, it was written over thirty years ago, by a bunch of people who didn't really consider the possible disrespect towards Islam. I understand its a popular setting, so all I'm hoping for is the removal of Islam, and all Islamic influences like Mosques and Caliphs. It's nothing crazy as many of these things are replaceable, and the middle east is home to the ancient Egyptians, Babylonians, sumerians, the persians, the many polythiestic arab tribes, there is an endless number of influences that can be drawn upon. Some may consider this excessive, but I don't care, my religion has a zero tolerance policy regarding these things, and I really hope that WoTC will repect it in the future
