It gets cold here in March. Even so, our Scouts BSA Troop does a two-day backpacking trip every year. We are fortunate in Ohio to have many backpacking opportunities within a short drive. Our Scouts BSA Troop takes good advantage of these year round.
A couple days below freezing never hurt anyone (maybe not totally true) so we planned time together in central Ohio in Zaleski State Forest. It is well maintained and potable water is provided at each campsite along with a primitive outhouse. We woke both mornings with new snow on our tents. Given that we have a scout-led troop, I was not surprised when they opted out of the extra 6-mile loop I had proposed. Instead, they used the time to collect extra firewood for our evening together.
Every year, Jon's Dad hikes at least one week on the AT with his friends. This group of backpackers formed as a spin off of the Scouts BSA troop our sons had joined. We have expanded our backpacking to include long weekends in the spring and fall as well as a winter backpacking trip in January or February. Understandably, the winter outing is not as well attended as the other three!
Jon's Dad hikes the world bringing exciting, interesting, and sometimes difficult trails to you. Appalachian Trail. John Muir Trail. Ice Age Trail. Pacific Crest Trail. Tour de Mont Blanc. Kungsleden - The King's Trail. Buckeye Trail. North Country Trail.
