Zaouli is a traditional dance of the Guro people (who speak the Guro language) of central Ivory Coast. The Zaouli mask, used in the dance, was created in the 1950s, reportedly inspired by a girl named "Djela Lou Zaouli"(meaning "Zaouli, daughter of Djela"). However, stories on the origins of the mask are varied, and each mask can have its own symbolic history. Each Guro village has a local Zaouli dancer (always male), performing during funerals and celebration The dance is believed to increase the productivity of a village that it is performed in, and is seen as tool of unity for the Guro community, and by extension the whole country. I've only discovered this type of dance in the last few days, and I'm so impressed. In my opinion though, it is more impressive when done in the plains of Africa, where the dancer kicks up dirt as he dances. It adds so much draw and mystique visually to the dance.
@wmden1
@wmden1 2 года назад
I agree, and the dancers and drummers are way better, for the most part. I caught up with this a couple of months ago. If you would, search for a dancer named Loh Samuel, who is usually in purple, with purple and white leggings. There is another whom I think is called Zaouli de Manfla, who is often in orange, green and white leggings. They are the best I have seen, so far. You are absolutely correct about the kicking up dust.

@@wmden1 These dancers seemingly have infinite stamina. It's as if they are puppets, being manipulated by an invisible being. Incredible. It's too bad that they're probably not rewarded enough financially for their hard work.

Pity camera is so far away. This video really doesn't capture just how difficult and surreal zaouli dance actually is . The foot work is surreal up close. The dancers not only have extreme endurance, grace but also legs the size of an Olympics sprinter.

Why is this piece of histoical art being watered down. This is the way how ancient Africa looses it identity. This will soon be accepted as its norm. Whilst the authenticity of the real thing become quietly extint.

"Better to see some proper Zaouli dancing" I am thinking a/ the idea that back in Ivory Coast they are necessarily in a trance, is probably not true, and b/ while this is less authentic for being on a stage, it is still "proper" dancing of the style. Whoever is doing it might be a bit offended that you think it isn't proper.

Actually the music interprets the dance. The drummers are suppose to follow the dancers feet. However the music is actually leading the dancer here which is non traditional as these spiritual dances aren't rehearsed at all. It's also traditional to avoid the same foot movements throughout the interpretation. Hence the non consistent patterns in the dance itself

These people are mostly not African but they love African music. They are maybe students. Please be kinder. Of course the atmosphere is different than in Africa. You may have seen better in Africa but imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. It is a pretty nice show and a good introduction. They did their best. Why do you all expect the most professional at a university show? Not all the Zaouli dancers on RU-vid are the same level: some are better than others even in Côte d’Ivoire. Can you all dance better than this Zahouli?

The stage, the Masonite, is not the same I think, as the dirt and dust of the grounded land. Still I am impressed at the coordination and power displayed by all. And I find it interesting, the spirit conjured by the warrior's feet are that of this man made environment. And instead of ta supernatural possession, we can see an entity of this constructed ground. That is why the dance took on something more similar to a tap dancing organic. more full body movement up and down was okay for how strong a channeled signal what manifest in that artificial place. Neat too how the stage shows us, man is drum. The drum is from man channels only himself. because there was no lack from the rhythm of mans' drum in there.
