The Zapata Falls Trail is a unique waterfall hike in south-central Colorado near Great Sand Dunes National Park that's on the bucket list of many outdoor enthusiasts! It's open year round, and there is no entry fee on this hike.
This is a short hike (only about a mile long - round trip), but reaching the waterfall can be somewhat tricky all throughout the year as it's located UP the creek.
⚡️ Late spring visit - wading through bitter-cold water and over slippery rocks is a must!

Had the pleasure of being re-baptized here. Was amazing. Truly shows the beauty of nature. Also make sure to head there when the runoff isnt too high so you can explore the other segments in there.

I bought 5.5 acres about 10 miles south of there a few years ago. Only been there once but plan to go camp out in spring 2024. Been to Zapata and the dunes several times. Central KY is home.

That sounds lovely! Spring is a prime time to visit the dunes - especially with Medano Creek flowing. So cool you got your own piece of paradise there. :)

I went there just 2 days ago! Visiting from Houston, my feet were numb, but it was definitely worth it once you get to the cave. Definitely something you should do after the hot sand dunes.

This water is from the snow mountain, I been up on top of the mountain around July, there is a lake and snow about the mid of the mountain. Is about 4 to five hours to the Lake and there are fish in it.

Thanks for your input. Was that South Zapata Lake that you went to?

if you would drive in the ditch it would be a smoother ride. I don't understand why they don't fix that road. mosquitoes was terrible when I was up there. make sure you carry bug spray

It will cost you a pretty penny becoming "stuck" back in there.

Yup, the road is pure hell. And yes, a bug spray is a must on this hike when the days warm up.

As the BLM wants restrict access the road condition is the best way. 75 % of the American tourists do not like to hike or are too fat or old to do so.

The road is not improved in order to keep visitation down. I've known people to turn around after only a 1/4 mile.

Too bad it's fake! Follow the water downstream, You'll find a concrete pumping station that pumps the water back up the mountain.

What makes you think that? I've seen the pipes downstream when we explored the area and I have no idea what their actual purpose is but was thinking along the line of diverting some of the water down into the valley? The creek continues upwards of the falls and connects with South Zapata Lake though not all maps show this.

Late summer, No running water on the mountain yet the falls are still flowing. Figure it out. I've driven my old Willys Jeep all over Mount Blanca. I've been to Three Sisters Falls (on Tobin Creek) late summer and no water, But magically Zapata flows!?!

A lot of stuff is “fake.” Every dam is “fake,” lots of rivers are “fake.” Who cares?
