Recently encountered two of such specimen...young, hep musicians no less, offered the most priggish bourgeois assesment of the Mothers since Trish Nixon reviewed Freak Out. I fear our goose is cooked people.
@@RegWhoI’m 19 years of age as of yesterday, and am obsessant over Zappa’s work, it’s on my bucket list to visit Zappanale. Don’t worry there are exceptions to every rule
Yeah they probably think you are lame because you do not listen to what the radio feeds you.... sad. The jam band scene though has a lot of decent jazz fusion bands that are worth noting. Nothing good is on the actual radio.
The fact that Steve Vai, as an 18 year old kid, had the balls and skills to play with Frank Zappa is a testament to his genius. Even his mentor, Joe Satriani, admits that he is jealous at times over his natural talent.
It's rare when a song written in what 1966 was relevant for those times and then jump forward 54 years later and here in fucked up 2020 it's still just as relevant! Frank Zappa was such an amazing unlimitedly talented genius...such a loss this world could use a couple hundred thousand Frank Zappa's
"It's rare when a song written in what 1966 was relevant for those times and then jump forward 54 years later and here in fucked up 2020 it's still just as relevant! " Yep. 'Boggles The Sane Mind', don't it ? Sad. 😢
A few years back I rewrote Son of Orange County to reflect modern times: "And in your dreams, you can see yourself/ making a profit/groping young girls/the words from your lips: "Whattya got to lose?"/I just can't believe you are such a fool/I just can't believe you are such a *tool*....". (Alternate drop-in quotes include "only I can do it", "I am your vengeance", or "you'll get tired of winning"). Anyway, perhaps Dweezil will be motivated to update another song, originally about Nixon, to reflect that "Donnie's Such An A-hola". I also remember an interview from maybe 40 years ago where Frank warned that the evangelicals were trying to take over the United States government. He was prophetic, and if he were alive today he'd probably be surprised only by the fact that that it took them so long......😖
Thank you, Dad. Thanks for introducing me to Zappa. And thanks for taking me to see Dweezil do the whole set of Roxy and Elsewhere live. I'll never forget it.
Dweezil is more than a "chip off the old block"; he is the "block off the old chip". In other words he more than emulates his old man. What a great musician!-- and the other members of the band are virtuosic to say the least!
Steve Vai... wow. I've never been a huge guitar god lovin' dude, but man oh man, what a friggin genius. His understanding of the guitar and how to manipulate it is beautiful. A true magician.
It does not get any better than this. Love it when Dweezil hits just the one note during the solo and messes with Steve Vai's head. The shear enjoyment of such great musicians playing as a band is overwhelming. Arf.
Just saw him a few weeks ago at the Keswick in Glenside. Brought tears to my eyes. Got to speak to him after the show. Thanked him for keeping his fathers music fresh and alive. Going again in March in Delaware.
Absolutely stunning performance ( again ) !!! For an instant I forgot, that it wasn´t Frank, that I was listening to. Dweezil hit the nail on the head again ! Love this music, and ZPZ is always an awesome experience. Greetings to everybody who love good music, from Helsinki, Finland !
First time I've listened to this, ever. A cold, windy and snowy day in the Great North Woods of New Hampshire... I could not agree more, Marko. The sound of Frank being there had tears welling up in my eyes as I heard the tribute coming from his son and being SPOT ON. I was amazed! Well done, Dweezil!
The guitar-feast is awesome and reminds me a bit of the smoking riffs I heard when Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin played during their "Love Devotion Surrender" tour in 1973. Saw Frank Zappa & the Mothers with Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band touring together that same year. Sooo, I'm old? ;) Grateful to have heard them all. What a great time to be alive!
A friend invited me in 1978 to see Frank Zappa. I was very young about 16 year's old. I had seen a little about music like Dire Strait, Fleetwood Mac, Genesis and some belgian bands but i always remembered that night in Brussel. I didn't know nothing about Zappa and when i heared his music i understood music was different, everything possible and funny and since then, Zappa's universe makes me believe in something else about human being, hope maybe whatever. I even went to USA to see him 5 times, Zappa was kind of an extra influence and when i listen his son i know that i didn't fool myself to love his music. Bravo Mister Dweezil!
This is incredible ! Every single person up there was amazing ! I have never really liked Steve vai's style but holly shit.... Some of the licks he was pulling off... Mind blown.. And then the drummers.. Need i say more
NMB has such a great voice, I could listen to him sing all day and night too. And that unmistakable righteous guitar playing of Stevie Vai, and of course Terry Bozzio. Wow what a treat!
I bought the "Hot Rats" vinyl album in 1970, and my whole world changed, musically--expanded. Ho comprato il "Hot Rats" album in vinile nel 1970 e tutto il mio mondo è cambiato, musicalmente - ampliato! The music world lost one of the greats, a tireless innovator, who belongs up there along side any of the great composers! Il mondo della musica ha perso uno dei grandi, un innovatore instancabile, che appartiene lassù lungo il lato uno qualsiasi dei grandi compositori!
It has nothing to do with the Zappa family. Its Dweezil. The Zappa family have fucked up Franks legacy big time! Blame Gail! Frank would be turning in his grave if he realised what dips Ahmet, Diva and Gail would turn in to!
upsideahead & Andy Thomas, I'm ignorant on all the family politics... so definitely no disrespect meant to anyone. Sad to hear that things have gone bum. Dang. But, I do appreciate the music.
This is so good, so brilliant, so soulful, on so many levels - it is truly: The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life - only what's better - you got to hear them right here. Indeed, Frank is a proud father - and who knows but that now he - finally - is at peace.
Seriously one of the best guitar battles of all time in this video, man I tear up everytime I watch that part cuz I know Frank would have loved to watch and listen to that like for real. And Terry Bozzio!! Man, he's such a badass percussionist and that drumset! I think it's crappy Ahmed and Diva are doing what they are doing now that Gail is gone!! Zappa Plays Zappa the Zappateers are behind you 100%!!
Vai just never came close to Zappa. He's a gimmick player. Jumps around the fretboard, does gimmick one, jumps to position two...does gimmick two. Zappa actually played a storyline from beginning to end. And it all made musical sense. Never just a bunch of position flurries with zero continuity and mostly non-sequiturs.
@@toncuz8291 You should really listen to more of Vai's solo stuff if you really think that. For example, "Lotus Feet" is an amazing piece that he composed and played for the Holland Metropole Orchestra. Search up the live video on RU-vid, I guarantee you that you'll change your mind then. And other songs like "For The Love Of God" and "Tender Surrender" are so damn emotional. He's even got stuff that's less shreddy like the song "Frank" dedicated to Frank Zappa. His playing is way different than Frank's but isn't any less meaningful.
Thank you for the info...but, that's the problem. I have heard several Vai tunes and have yet to hear a great story-line or good continuity of thought (that lasted more than a few measures). Listen to Zappa's studio version of "Inca Roads". Utterly exquisite. It's as if each measure was designed to perfectly resolve from the last. Even Zappa's "Live In New York" had extemporaneous solo's that exceeded so many player's ability to "connect" musical language in such amazing congruence. Zappa's "question and answer" ability was possibly second to none. Listen to Santana's "Europa" and "Revelations". Both have some pretty demonic overtones, and you know exactly what he's saying, from beginning to end. Your adrenaline will be depleted. Changing registers to sound like you're leading the listener to another place en route to resolution, is only ok if the player returns to the theme in a perfect route to that resolution. Vai's technical prowess far exceeded his musicality. Many technicians use their "runs" to mask their lack of true musical thinking skills.
Usually I find drum solos boring, but this guy did the best I've ever heard in my life. What a player and what a kit! All-round astonishing performances by everyone on stage.
Wow!!! Napoleon Murphy Brock, Steve Vai, Terry Bozio!!!! What an awesome reunion!!! It's so good that Frank lives on through his music!!! I wish I could see Dweezil on his current ZPZ Roxy and Elsewhere tour!!! Thank you for uploading and sharing this!!!!
Holy Christ on a stick. I kept watching this video thinking "Ahh, i'll only watch a couple more minutes to see the end of this groove" Wellp, I'm 17 minutes in, wondering if I'll be able to resist watching the next Zappa plays Zappa video I find.
I was at this show. Took my son and two of his friends. A good time was had by all. "Little" Stevie Vai, Terry Bozzio, Napoleon Murphy Brock. Oh what night!
I had a beer with Jamie Kime and a couple other band members after a show in Spokane Washington at a bar down the street from the Bing Crosby Theater. The show was sparsely attended and my friend and I ended up in the 4th row, right in front of Shiela. Great friggin' show! Saw them again in Spokane a few years later on Frank's birthday. Another memorable show.
ZPZ is a gift from God for us FZ fanatics. Saw them with NMB, Via and Bozzio on a Halloween night at The Theater (under Madison Square Garden) in NYC - formerly known as The Felt Forum where I saw his father play many a Halloween night back in the day.
Dweezil Zappa,Steve Vai,Terry Bozzio somebody said something like look at all that talent.Understatement the whole band is as tight as a hermetically sealed jar on Funk and Wagnels home porch!
I actually didn't know much Zappa before discovering the full length video of this concert. The musicianship of literally every member of this band blew me away. I had tried to get Zappa a few times since about 30yrs ago as a student, listened to Nanook and Cozmic debris but didn't get it back then. The full length video had so much content that I listened to very little else for about a year till I knew every fill and solo. Sheila playing keyboard and sax simultaneously was a highlight among many. Shouldn't have been surprised as she teaches at Berklee, and that tells me enough! Dweezil got me into Frank😊 Hopefully he'll come back to the UK as I have to go see some of this.
I've been playing guitar,of and on for 20yrs.and orange county gives me motivation to pick it up again. great job zpz. kick ass.gre motivational video. and Steve--and the rest of the band... what can I say...
i am 25 and try to turn everyone i know on to the Genius that was Frank.. Saw them two years in a row now.. and will never miss another show.. Real musicians playing Real music.. Dig it, Merry Christams. RIP Frank.. Keep it up Dweezil..
just listening to this makes all the hairs on my skin stand up and it brings tears to my eyes when i think about the great gift of music passed down from father to son.
What a line-up! Dweezil has certainly evolved into a superb musician and does his dad and his music proud! It's very nice to see Napoleon, Vai. Bozzio,et al, playing the good stuff and having so much fun! Thanks for sharing!
I was listening to this the other day while I was working at home. I have my Zappa RU-vid videos (200+) on auto-play. When this came one, I didn't even realize it was Zappa playing Zappa until I went to shut it off. Amazing what the Dweez and Co. has put together here. What a GREAT! way to keep Frank's music alive. He would certainly be proud.
probrojeffro Bro, are you saying sometimes when you are listening to ZPZ, THE DWEEZ! You think you are listening to 'The Mothers'? because sometimes when I close my eyes, I swear I can hear Frank.I put that as a comment about a month ago, and someone basically called me an idiot and went into some 'spiel' about it. I am so glad I am not the only one.... THE DWEEEEEEEEEZZZZ!!! Frank would have been proud for sure! :-))
Keith Hall I think it's in the DNA. I mean it's not the exact same, of course, the Dweez does a lot of hammers and pull offs, being a big fan of Eddie and, I'm sure, Vai, but the level of his play and that of this band is pretty damn high, and that's where Frank and his band mates played without exception. Of course Dweezel is a more benevolent leader, but quality is very close. Of course having Napoleon Murphy sing helps bring the sound back to Mother bands gone by.
I understand not exactly the same, Frank was more manic and sporadic in his playing (which I love) Dweez is much smoother with the guitar. (I just know Dweez is one hell of a guitarist these days) Its great watching ex Mothers playing with Dweez such as Vai. Bozzio, and certainly one of my favorites NMB... even Scott Thunes I am sure was on one ZPZ video.
This is my first time listening to Dweezils version of this song... and... wow. I always somehow refused to listen to it cause its not Frank.... but damn its good... and when I saw Napoleon Murphy Brock... I was so damn happy.... dont know why... I always liked that guy .... Thank you for the great music
More Funding to the Music Department for our Youngsters! Zappa should be music prerequisite! Or at least required listening. The freedom is evident in the lesson. The battle rages on unabashed
on a zappa listening dive via RU-vid, and I listened to this song for quite a while before even noticing "hey...I don't recognize this playing? At all? Close, but what's going on?" I might've figured it out towards the end, but happy to have looked and seen what was going on. I have a lot to learn still which is awesome.
+aristotle358 Thats Vai man, you accept and dig it ... Dweezil does his thing. They compliment each other nicely. Bozio is the Killa !! Hes fucking great
rob g Fair comment. The entire line-up is exceptionally brilliant ! But just as one can eat something rich and sweet and were to eat too much one would feel queasy, that's how Vai affects me. Lovely in small amounts but I couldn't listen to a whole show of that kind of playing.
In today's world a trade founded by the father is rapidly becoming something of the past, considering that many kids don't carry on where their fathers left off (instead they arse about with their Iphones and are not creative). Dweezil has the power to keep his father's music, genius, and legend alive (and I hope Dweezil's kids will continue too), this assures his musical genius and inspiration will never cease to exist. The man was a musical pioneer, I love his sound and style, and when I hear stuff like this it positively charges me! Long live the name FRANK ZAPPA, and long live his creations. Thankyou Dweezil Sir for continuing to share your father's music with us!
I was lucky enough to be able to see this exact tour & BOY did it bring back memories of seeing all 3 versions of The Mothers when I was a kid , what great music he left us .
