There is no need to use this 'hack' with a Zappi anymore, as there is now the MyEnergi Account, which automatically schedules charging for the cheapest time slots on Agile or other smart tariffs.
But if you still want to hardwire something then this video shows you how to make a Zappi EV Charger react to an appropriate drop in variable Tariff rates and 'Boost Charge' your EV with cheaper electricity (I use Octopus Agile, but should work with other variable tariffs).
No need to set specific charging times to catch the cheap rates.
This system will 'Boost Charge' your EV whenever the variable rate drops below the threshold that you set, as long as your EV is plugged in and the battery is not yet at the charge level you have set it to stop charging at.
And the additional hardware shouldn't cost more than 20 GBP, possibly just half that if you shop around.
