the women who are being interviewed in this documentary say that they go to zara three or more times a week. it is the mental disease of such consumers which drives fast fashion and leads to exploitation and environmental destruction, as shown in this very excellent documentary. even if these crazy consumers were shown the bad reality behind the whole operation they would not change their behaviour, they could not, because it is an addiction. fast fashion has made them addicted to constantly buy new clothes. and they can only do so because these clothes are cheap as chips. as long as fast fashion exists the horror will go on.

The girls working in the factories are under such pressure to produce at a high speed. I would like to hear their opinion. The control of chemicals in production is so tragic. All in the name of a garment. Governments can enforce strict controls, or are there bribes involved?
@Elena-fe3os
@Elena-fe3os 4 месяца назад
The high speed requirement , for a job, is present everywhere, in various domains, many employers seek efficiency..in delivering a product, manufactured or services..from food, to services , even in office jobs.. I have worked as waitress, in my youth, abroad, coming from an underdeveloped East European country..we were under pressure to serve, clean , stand, finish the job in certain time. It was my choice to get that job, to remain for some years, which allowed me to save..and the largest part of the income was coming from guests, not the employer. As a manager, I seek efficiency too, from the employees. Hear their opinion? What for ? Probably they are grateful for having a job. Many Tunisians ( and others from N Africa) emigrated to Spain , for economic reasons, for many years there is migration and can see many of them in South of Spain. Tunisians have some turistic places, do not know of anything else. If economy is low..there are not many choices and the companies, like Zara and others are able to keep low prices for the products only going for the mass production in such countries. Sewing is a job without qualification and it is paid minimum wage, everywhere. Same was my waitress job . The underdeveloped countries have a very small salary, comparing with the developed ones and, no matter who is the employer, cannot pay , legally, over that sum, as it is a job for unqualified. Can get some bonuses..Seamstresses in Spain, Italy, US etc would earn the minimum wage in those countries which is up to 10 times, at least , comparing with poor countries. The job and requirements are same..as everywhere. The level of life is different. The countries are responsible for theor laws regarding regulations about chemicals.. on clothes, food.. I have noticed how in Europe, for example, there are banned some processing food substances , which are allowed in other countries.. and that is also in US , many others are allowed, but not in Europe

The point is the governments in these poor countries say they are not at the point to be able to afford to care about an environment - they say: only when we reach your level of riches you have, we will care about the things you care for. - Like at times of first industrial revolution e.g. in England - noone took time to care about environment (xcept for Blake and other visionaries who were considered half crazy).

You are oversimplifying the world... People need jobs and governments in 3rd world countries have to keep there citizenry marginally happy with almost no resources. Besides they didn't look particularly unhappy to me... As for dumping tge dirty water in the sea. That's just negligent and reckless

In 1960 my parents started a textile factory from scratch. I was born the same year and yes it were the "golden years" till end of the seventies. Trips to Paris and Milano for trends and fashionweeks,all well as long as it stayed within Belgium,our town had its reputation in Paris. Growth and loancost took its toll and by the mid nineties everything was gone,bankrupt for most. In fact everything I see in this reportage is exactly what I've seen in my youth,sadly nothing has changed only worsened. At some point things get out of hand and the point is coming where it's getting out of OUR (human) hands. "Time is money"....2 synthetic unnatural factors that destroy our very basis of real life. Time to get back to the essence of everything,conscious creation.

I worked for Zara for 8 years (2011 - 2019) The Worse environment ever. I needed the job, so I couldn’t leave it. 😢 I don’t understand how a big company like that don’t have control, all around the world I heard from other people who worked or work for them… is all the same, they want the employee to do the job of 3 people… I worked so much in my first years, hoping to get a better position one day, many times my phone was ring at 7am on my day off, my boss called me in… I was bullied by my bosses many times, specially when I got pregnant. Things got worse when Zara team in Spain sent a Spanish lady to keep her eyes close on us, then I understood that the way we were threatened come from the heads in Spain. Not only me, but I know people who left Zara very broken mentally 😢 They should have more employees at the stores, they shouldn’t work for 3 people. Because of course that the company will have more $$$$ when they save on people. Now in 2024, I don’t know how it is… hoping they get better.

Ortega's resilience and success story is impressive. Zara has been huge to my generation to democratize fashion and Im thankful but the next challenge for Zara is the sustainability. We have no excuses after such a big success to still pollute and give unfair wages. We have enough clothing in the world to spend for the next 10 years. Im supporting the 2nd hand market Zara Pre-owned but Im sure they can do more and better.

44:19 that is called piece work. In my county of Mississippi 40 years ago there were pant factories everywhere. People made a good living. No retirement pay but still a good hard living. When big company decided to take them to another country to have pants made by very very cheap labor, that was the downfall of our economy. Crimes went up and poverty too. The rich get richer. Look this guy started off in Spain with a small company of workers. Then he found out he could get richer by sending his work to other countries that had cheap labor. He forgot about what it felt like for his mother in Spain that couldn’t get enough money to feed her son. Now he is the richest man in the world. No wonder he hides

Hm,.. I am glad that Ortega is living a comfortable life. I couldn't live with myself if people working with me had to be under so much pressure & die young from cancer as they were too slow if working with gloves, mask & protection. How much does one person need to make their mark? Richest man or not after a while no one really cares! But man that truly changed lives, provided well paid jobs in Spain or elsewhere, safe envirornment. If this man used clean, organic materials & natural colours, didn't poisson water & land, these products would be of decent quality & could be worn for a while & cherished. Now, this would be something to brag about. And by doing this if he made say 100 000 euros a year I recon that woud be plenty. He could live simple life then maybe wouldn't even need bodyguards or to steal other people's designs. To me that would be a person that deserves great respect & a life well lived.

Zara: rich fashion owner at the expense of the Earth's environment. Once upon a time, Zara "came from a poor family"; now, his fashion's environmental practices of textiles/leather impoverishes millions of people around the world by contaminating air/water formations/soil: price of "fast fashion."

maybe that s exactly the competitive advantage of Zara, design can be copied but design is not equivalent to quality in fashion and luxury (true luxury brands use very high quality materials with superior level to details, that is not in Zara, while those in the stuck in the middle brands just want to charge a premium for a brand/design surely will be competed away by Zara systems) , also if Zara manages to "copy" exactly a luxury brands selling at 1/10 of the price with a good profit margin, thus making luxury fashion more affordable to a broader audience, then really the whole world should salutes to Zara

I don't feel sorry for the insanely expensive brands I AM VERY SORRY FOR THE SMALL EMERGING BRANDS, IT IS NOT HUMANE to do this. I AM SORRY THAT Zara doesn't impose a bit more strict rules when comes to production, now he is the richest man on the planet, how much Ortega might loose if he pays $5 more to dye a pair of jeans and the environment gets a better treatment?

Unfortunately, Zara's design quality dropped badly in the last 1~2 years... Zara used to be the brand that brought the most attractive designs, at affordable prices with the tradeoff of low-price fabric. But when it loses its design advantage, the price is no longer fair for the cheap fabric...Very sad. It took years to build the brand reputation, but just took 1~2 years to ruin it...fashion industry is deadly competitive and much attached to the quality of PEOPLE: designers than any industry.

yes, unfortunate that it’s „unethical“ or „polluting“ but I have to say: the cheaper brands are ALL like this. Shein, primark, h&m … they’re all the same in the end. the only alternative would be to buy more expensive stuff that was made in your first world country where it isn’t easy to break labor and environmental laws as easily as kt is in the third world. but only few people can afford this. people got used to being able to buy many pieces of clothing per year/month. when a shirt is 80€ or a jeans is always 120€, people will feel poorer for they can’t afford many pieces anymore. only works if you’re richer

Do you know why there are kids working?BECAUSE THE PARENTS have unprotected sex,KNOWING a kid will be born and they have NOTHING to give to the kid(the p00r have up to 15 kids per woman)so the parents sell themIT IS NOT ZARA´S FAULT, it is the PARENTS of the kids who ARE CRUEL.not the millionaires it´s the p00r who are CRUEL.Also the countries that accept factories that pollute are culprits.Or not?

Personally, I've come to the conclusion that most well performing brands abuse certain ethics when it comes to production. yet I think when the idea is sold out and then huge profits are made, workers need a little raise for their contribution and effort.
