I agree with both you guys. I think majority of artists in music are not sober when theyre creating. But i do believe that they've made music when they were sober, and there are artists who make music soberly and live a sober life for the most part. This may be farfetch'd, but some people can really just get a euphoric feeling when playing an instrument or making music without the use of a foreign substance. Kind of like what runners call a "runner's high" or food coma.

One reason Zay’s beats bang so hard is cause he starts with his drums on an mpc. The beat starts with the drum groove, and he leaves plenty of space around that groove as he builds the beat.

one thing i noticed was how he made the loops of each instrument long and not short. shows he knows where everything is going to be placed within the loop. it seemed like a lot of it was just done by ear and not needing to see the arrangement on screen. dudes a legend.

Yeah, nothing random about the pads he’s hitting. The way the MPC works is by allowing the user to input samples, edit/manipulate the sounds (in this case isolating the kick, hat and snare/being 2019 he probably just uploaded the premade drum kit). Regardless, he assigned each open/closed hat, different bass kicks, and snares into corresponding pads. Considering he multilayered the tracks with each one having a different element of a drum pattern, it would be impossible for him to just be mashing random notes. If you ever find yourself in a Guitar Center, stop at the music production section and try using an Akai, Roland, or Native Instru unit. It’s nothing like those phone apps that let you hit anything on the screen and have it fit with an already existing track playing in the background...

This is dope but what allows music producers to create music so quickly and effortlessly is their understanding of chords and progressions. Once he found a sound he liked, he was able to use that same sound in a higher octave. And just like that you have a beat. Music is dynamic and it's good to know how to sample and to use chords.
