I own this lens and i don't find manual focus as a downside or inconvenience. I love this lens, is the best one i had and i think i will ever had, i shoot with it only at f/2 and rarely at f/4.

Marius Paul MF is a personal preference - a lot of photographers who used to work in the analogue days have no problem using MF (especially with a good focusing screen), however most photographers from the digital age find it much more challenging.

MF and AF are characteristics thus making a lens for a certain type of people and field of work. If you can use manual focus lens in your field of work, do it but if you need AF,use AF lenses. So as i said, it's not about preferences,it's about needs. There are good and bad photographers , you will only hear bad photographers say MF is a downside or inconvenience, good photographers will say "Use what you need".

Marius Paul I don't agree. I don't think MF has anything to do with good/bad photographers. I have seen amazing work by photographers who never shot with MF. It is purely a matter of habit (and it does require some skill as well), but it's not as if MF is for pro's and AF is for beginners. I also don't think that there are any specific needs where you must have MF (apart maybe from macro work - but this isn't a macro lens so this has nothing to do with it). For portraits there is no real advantage to MF over AF - the other way around - yes (especially when shooting moving subjects).

I think you got me wrong, as i said, it's about needs and now i will like to ad skills, technical photographic skills. And i never said about good/bad photographers based on their work, it's about technical skills. Anyone can do good photos and it's not about AF or MF. Oh but MF can go from fashion, baby, child, wedding, nature, animals (and not stills) and many more. Have a good day :)

Design is nicer than the Otus IMO (have one of each), the metal focus ring is nicer, the rubber gets finger-printed up and looks sort of dirty, comes off as sort of cheap as well

How do you find the image quality of the Otuses vs the 135/2 Sonnar T*? I hear is similar. I have the Otus 85/1.4 myself, and I love it to death. But I'm considering a 135mm too.

hai i have this amaizing lens on my d810 and 3 more lenses from zaiss the 85mm planar (non otus) and 100macroplanar and 55otus and some sigma art series lenses i tell you Acording to dxomarck there is onley 2 lenses for the d810 that can resolve 35 out of 36.3 meapixels on the marked and that is the 85mm otus and the 135mm zf2 the one that i have the otus 55mm can resolve 33megapixels on my d810 the 135mm is sharper than my 100mm macroplanar

I want to apologize in advance if my comment will come across as rude, but I am not attempting to be rude. In my opinion, this review is terrible. First of all, the 135 mm Zeiss gives you edge to edge full 100% Sharpness on a D800 or D810 based on DxOmark. I purchased the lens on my D810 and came to the conclusion that that is true under certain circumstances. Since this is a 135 mm lens, there are certain things to be advised: - Use Mirror Lock-Up to achieve 'best' results (not to say that you must use Mirror Lock-Up for good images) - Use tripod whenever you can, remember, this is a 135 mm lens with a far reach, any shake will affect sharpness - When using with hands, have fast shutter speed / good lighting for fast shutter If you master this 135 mm, you can get 100% perfect quality, I promise you all!

+Dracule Mihawk Not rude at all I agree with more or less everything you noted - it isn't easy shooting with this lens but if you can nail it - it is amazing. P.S. DxOmark is good for sensor scores - I would not take their lens tests to be the most accurate representation - there are far better web tests around.

Lensvid Thank you for your positive response my friend! This is what I usually do: - find a good rated lens on DxOmark - look up Raw files - look up world-wide users of the lens on Flickr That should give me a good idea of a lens. The 135 mm Zeiss was one of the best investment's I've ever made :)

+Dracule Mihawk I prefer to read reviews on photozone - but I agree reading users reviews is important.

you talk too slow. you probably wasted 3-4 minutes repeating things like comparing it over and over with the Otus line. talk faster.

shadowknight moon :) it isn't a problem with Zeiss it's a licensing issue with Canon/Nikon (see the Zeiss-Sony AF line).
