I absolutely love my 100mm macro "Classic". That one and the 35mm f2 are my favorites for Nikon digital. I recently got the Zeiss 35 f2 zm for Leica and that one is awesome too with film. Interestingly, Zeiss glass is considered "expensive" when compared to Canikon but "cheap" when compared to Leica glass. That says a lot about Leica pricing

+Color Crush Media I've been shooting a fair bit of video with it, and you are right. The only thing that I can criticize for video is the CA in certain situations.

Is this milvus lens the same design as the classic version(optical)? The milvus one is twice more expensive than the classic version.

I use my Zeiss 100mm f2 Makro-Planar ZE T* with my Canon 5DSR and the macro shots are sick !!!!!!!

Thanks for review, I had used the older Makro Planar couple of times by renting, that certainly was the best "macro" lens I had used and IQ was miles better than Canon's 100mm L.

RU-vid should offer a "download original video" option. It's really hard to see the actual quality of the images with all that compression. Thanks again for a great review, Dustin.

You would need to look at the image gallery for that. A 1080p video ain't going to cut what you're wanting to do no matter the compression type.

Great review as always, but I've already lost count on how many Zeiss glasses you have reviewed! Have you ever consider doing a round up of Zeiss manual lens recommendation video in the future?

I will be doing a video directly comparing the 100mm and 135mm Milvus lenses as those might get cross-shopped. I've reviewed the majority of the releases from all the different lens manufacturers (for Canon mounts) in the past few years, so I do try to treat them all equally.

if there was a compulsion of using just ONE Lens for Lifetime, it would be 100 Milvus for me, ... none other, neither AF-Primes nor AF-Zooms, not even the new Milvus 135 (APO - apochromat, though the term may have been removed from designation), and also NOT the Milvus 50 or 85 ... & OTUS. Thanks Dustin for this accurate review.

I'm considering replacing my Canon 100mm with this Zeiss. Only thing that makes me hesitant is that my 90D obviously doesn't have ibis. Did you find it difficult to shoot the Zeiss without a tripod?

That depends. For normal shots, no. For macro or video, yes.

hi again, Dustin. I already have the 100 (classic) MP and wondering if the CA is much better on the Milvus version? I also have the 15mm Classic (and 8 other Zeiss ZE lengths) and bummed that it also has been Milvus'd. Btw, I'll be in SE Asia monsoons soon and, so far, opting to take 16-35f4IS, 45 and 85 Tamrons (due to your recommendations) and 200 2.8L -- all for non-white L but weather sealed optics. My only Milvus so far is the 50 1.4, and a contender to replace the 45SP this trip.

I don't think it is a lot better. The optical formula is pretty much the same. The coatings are improved, but the big step up is the weather sealing.

I wonder how does it work if I match the milvus 100 macro ZF with Sony a6000? Does the camera itself lower the quality of the milvus? I'm looking for a full manual macro lens for video purpose, but I only have the $ to either get the sense or upgrade to full frame camera body, can I please ask for some suggestions please?

I'd go for the lens. It will work well now and will work when you upgrade to full frame later.

I think the screwhead on the Canon shot is a bit before focalplane, while the Zeiss shot is right onto it. There is really not a lot in focus here, making the focusvariation the biggest difference in sharpness here. So I´m wellcoming the new testchart in recent reviews. Thanks.

Hi Dustin, in terms of bokeh and 3d quality, is it milvus 100 or Laowa 105? Thanks. Of course Zeiss is three time more expensive than Laowa and comes in only 2 mounts, unlike Laowa that comes with E mount too. (which I use)

The Zeiss is a more versatile lens, in my opinion, and is incredibly sharp. I found the Laowa a bit harder to use (it can be a little unpredictable at times). But price is a big consideration, I know, and the Laowa offers a lot of bang for the buck.

They are the same optical formula. The Milvus has slightly updated coatings and a better physical design.

@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks. I suspected that they actually are. I came across DXO stating that the Milvus resolves 41 mpx vs the Classic Makro Planar 25 mpx, which I find hard to believe, it left me scratching my head considering that it’s the same optical formula. I wonder how they arrived to such conclusion. Doesn’t make any sense.

I don't have any manual focus lenses , how do you properly set up your camera for it??

+bobbintonn There isn't much to do unless you want to install a precision matte screen like I did on one of my 6D bodies. It doesn't interfere with autofocus at all.

The optics are mostly the same. The design and handling is significantly different.

I was about to order it, but dang that's a lot of CA. Hmm. Might get the 85mm or 135mm instead. I know there's almost no CA in the 135mm, that lens is smokin'.

I tried it with mine gfx50s. It has almost no vignetting, the sharpness and the quality is great, but to be honest I prefer mine Leica R 100mm f2.8 APO, also because compared to the zeiss 100mm f2, it has much less Chromatic Aberrations.

Frankly there isn't a big difference. It's the same optics, so you have to determine whether the improved build and handling is worth the additional money.

No it isn't. The Milvus 50mm F1.4 is an all-new lens and much stronger optically.

@@DustinAbbottTWI DXO mark states that on a Nikon d850 the Milvus resolves 41 mpx whereas with the classic a maximum of 25. I have a hard time understanding how the same lens formula can leapfrog from 25 to 41 with different lens coating only. Doesn’t make sense to me. I think DXO is taking a piss on us.

I thought now it is called Zeiss Milvus 2/100M, where M stands for Macro (not millimeters). Can't see any reason for not calling it a macro lens anymore :).

The f2.8 frame comparison was... odd. When you zoomed to the horizon the Zeiss was DRAMATICALLY sharper. As if you relied on Cannon AF and missed the infinite focus altogether.

My methodology for these comparisons is pretty consistent. I use 10X Live View MF to make sure AF is not a part of the equation.

If you are adapting to a mirrorless camera, then yes. There are plenty of focus aids that make focus easy.

+nagol5178 I'm using it now. Truthfully, though, 20-22MP is enough to get a very good sense of resolution, though higher resolution bodies can sometimes reveal a few additional flaws.

Yeah, well it lets you know how well a lens resolves. Some lenses don't look that different on the 6D but they do on the 5DSR. I got to get the video camera first and then I'm on my way to get the 5D Mark IV! I wish I had it now as the leaves will be changing soon.

I have an EG-S Precision focus Screen installed to show true depth of field and allow for accurate visual confirmation of focus. It makes MF a LOT more fun.

I think that's an overstatement - this is a very good lens, and it's not unusual for 1:2 lenses to be labelled as macro.

canon 100mm 2.8L IS USM Macro is a lot better lens 1:1 and IS ... who cares about half stop aoerture and a bit hair if sharpness . versatility and price point canon is a winner

+Francisco Javier Gomez As I said, this lens may not be for everyone. Don't sell that full stop of light gathering short, though. For non-macro work (portraits or low light work), that extra stop of light can make a big difference. I love the Canon 100L, too (I've owned it since it came out), but it doesn't make this lens any less special.
