Zelda: The Minish Cap - Any% Speedrun World Record History

The Minish Cap is one of the least explored Zelda games, keeping up with its theme of being underrated. But the history of the speedrun has been a fierce competition that rivals some of the biggest speed games in the Zelda franchise.
Note: This is a re-upload because of an issue we saw in the original video. Everything is fixed now, thank you for being patient!
Special thanks to the Minish Cap community, especially quo! quo was instrumental in the making of this video. This video was also made with the help of Atroz, Tompa, and ToadsWoot.

Since the release of this video, a new trick was discovered that's really awesome! As explained in the video, the Bracelet Skip is a very risky but rewarding trick. Well, a better version has been found that's faster and consistent, meaning theres no more risk, and any runner can get a big timesave! Expect the record to change hands many times in the near future, and expect to see a lot of runners coming back to the game (assuming you follow the twitch/discord scene)

Great vid! in my defense for the tourney though, I was actually having electrical problems and couldn't play. I did that run at someone else house on an old busted gamecube and the AV cables quit during the run. I had to jiggle them for the picture to finally come back but... it was too late. That was a good race, but it always bothered me that I lost without being able to play to my fullest.

I remember practicing speedrunning this game back in 2012. Used Tompas TAS as a guideline. I think I only finished one single segment run with a time of 03:30 or something. For some reason I wanted to save time by not grabbing the heart pieces which was fucking stupid since it lead to me spending one hour trying to defeat Vaati with only 3 Hearts lol. Can't believe it has been almost 10 years since. Great video, I really enjoyed it. Minish Cap was my first Zelda game back in 2004 and definitely one of my favourites in the series to this day.

I watched a couple of minish cap runs through the years, so I was somewhat excited seeing this video in my feed. You truly created an awesome video to watch, everything seems well researched and the script is created in a way that it does not only cater to people who know the game really well as a speed game. I don‘t really have much time nowadays to play games but this video really got me thinking about playing minish cap again. Looking forward to watch more of your videos!

I figured out that "mini mushroom grab" trick by pure accident when I was playing the game, given even though I don't have the drive to actually speed run a game, I like to optimize movement like a speedrunner does, just not good with frame and pixel perfect tricks and what not. I always love speedrun videos though cuz they help me figure out some movement tech, keep up the good work on these videos

Wow, this video pretty much encompasses everything I'd want to see in a Speedruning video. Usually I find it a bit repetitive when a long list of WRs are listed off, but you did a great job of explaining what part of each run had it beat the last. I absolutely loved how you brought in the actual runners to comment on what they were doing. I had a little bit of trouble keeping track of who was talking though - it'd be nice to have some sort of indication about which runner was talking at the moment (such as a simple label in the bottom of the screen with their name on it). 35:45 is an example of where it would be helpful to have. All in all great video! You obviously care a great deal about the category and it shows.

I am not into speedrunning at all, but I love TAS. This video made me wonder about the rules of TAS. Can anyone here clarify? Why does it matter if a TAS is spliced or not? I can understand in principle, but really you would just be rerunning the TAS until your rng element works out in your favor for example the TAS used in bioshock 3. I can also understand using unspliced TAS during live events because its live. On a side note I recommend you stop this channel and move it back to your main channel, because the youtube algorithms aren't pushing this channel or your videos.
@quospeedruns
@quospeedruns 5 лет назад
So a TAS being spliced isnt /necessarily/ a bad thing since TASes are, by nature, not competitive but rather for entertainment. However the problem lies where if a TAS is spliced, it may no longer be accurate to console for a lot of things, such as RNG manipulations. On the other hand, it's a lot easier to, for example, cut out a part of a run and "magically" obtain a random item from a segment that doesn't actually appear in the final movie (which has happened before). For those reasons and probably more, spliced TASes don't appear on tasvideos.org
@TompaA
@TompaA 5 лет назад
Additionally, for a TAS to be valid, it has to consistent of a single string of inputs that should sync from start to finish when replayed in an emulator. This is a guarantee that the the TAS is legit and it actually makes it impossible to cheat a TAS with this method.

I'm more of an original hardware kind of guy, but I think for handheld games, emulation should be allowed, simply due to making it alot easier to play and record. Provided of course it's not running at like 5% faster cpu or something like that.

rather than unlist emulator runs, wouldnt it be less controversial to just add the time difference to runs that used emulators? unless the difference wouldnt be uniform... im genuinely curious.
@SpeedDocs
@SpeedDocs 5 лет назад
I'm not sure if the time difference is uniform across the entire run, but there is a video that shows the first section of the run on 8(?) different platforms (a few different emulators, the 3ds port, GB player, etc). There are definitely noticeable time differences, but it might be too difficult to extrapolate those results across the entire run, as well as the entire leaderboard

If the emulator was significantly faster for this run, then why didn't they simply make it Eulator%, instead of banning it outright? It'd be the same as having Any% vs 100%, when one is obviously faster than the other. If there is no legitimate reason for the ban other than "Emulator's too fast", then that feels like a misguided and inconsiderate attempt to preserve fairness at the expense of certain speedrunners.
