That was a beautifully composed analysis, yet again. Incredible work from AMD as well. New northbridge should also be interesting, it's been a very long time since they revised it. This is the most modern X86-64 microarchitecture to date, I hope they come in at a decent price point.

Great as always! I really like that you always discuss the technical side. Also, you keep it clean with no weird comparison stories or intermediary bla-bla such as unnecessary jokes and the like, like other RU-vid tech channels. And of course, like this time, you discuss the things that they show in their keynote demos. That's always interesting because these companies know how to present their stuff favorably :) Anyway: Keep it up!

The dream would be them nailing 3 points; performance, which we believe they did, price, which we don't know, and supply, which we doubt. I want to get on the hype train, but I'm probably still buying a Skylake PC by the year's end.

hey adored, 2 questions 1) What do you think of the fact you can now get RX480's (4gb) for as low as $220 with aftermarket cooling. Does this kinda kill the 470 at price of $180 ish? 2) My friend keeps telling me to buy a 1060 over a 470/480 for around same price (looking to upgrade from a 280 (3gb) I game at 1080p and do minimal video editing in sony vegas and no g-sync monitors (so cuda does not do me anything). cards i am looking at: 480- www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814126135&cm_re=rx_480-_-14-126-135-_-Product 1060 - www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814137034&cm_re=1060-_-14-137-034-_-Product Cheers!

Honestly, thank you for your architecture breakdown. I am a programmer and I've seen other videos try to explain this. If they can deliver a quad-core 8 thread with IPC on par or better than Haswell, with at least a 3.2GHz base clockspeed, with no useless iGPU, for $200 or less, I'm sold. With the decreasing price of RAM, SSDs, and GPUs, I really think it's time CPUs got the same treatment. We need $350 true 8-core processors.

Is the low 'IPC' why Intel CPUs smashes AMD's, even though AMD seem to have more cores and a higher clock speed in general at a certain price point?
@adoredtv
@adoredtv 7 лет назад
Yes.
@JamesHoldsworthPlus
@JamesHoldsworthPlus 7 лет назад
It makes more sense when you know IPC stands for Instructions Per Clock. So the performance is related to the total rate of instructions; the clock rate matters, and the instructions per clock cycle as well. It is more complex than this, of course, but it's a pretty good simplification.

I think you are right and the first generation of Zen is going to come up just short of it's goal in matching or beating Skylake. Just like the Polaris gpus, they made a really good showing with the new architecture but it was a tad slower than what they were hoping for. I really think Vega and the 2nd generation Zen cpus are going to show results closer to what everyone was expecting with the new architecture, at least I hope so.

But the question isn't "Can Zen compete with Broadwell-E at the $1,000.00 Level?", the question is "Can Zen get within 10% of Skylake's performance up and down the stack at a saner price point creating competition for Intel?"

You didn't mention slight problem with that Blender benchmark. Intel was tested on Windows 10, AMD was tested on some kind of Linux. It's easily visible in their video, just look at the taskbar. I don't know if Blender works better on AMD or Intel on Linux, but whatever AMD reasons were, we didn't see apples to apples comparison.

AMD has said they are using high density libraries in Zen. The individual core is crazy small in mm^2. Like 3/5ths the size of of a Skylake core. With so many stages in the pipeline, and such a dense approach in 14nm FinFET, I have no doubt that signal propagation is not a problem in Zen in hitting high clocks. What it might require for stability at high clocks though, is higher voltage to overwhelm the leakage. We are seeing this in Polaris which also uses high density libraries. It will clock to 1500MHz, but it takes big voltage to do it. I think Zen will have a top SKU of something like 3.2GHz all core, 3.6GHz single core boost, but this is 95W TDP. A Zen chip could possible reach into the mid 4GHz range at double that TDP. We have to wait and see.

Guru3d is alright I think, at least they aren't filled with GameWorks titles exclusively. TechSpot is ok as well. PCGamer too. In terms of RU-vidrs I'd trust Joker most, Steve at GamersNexus and HardWare Unboxed. Anyone who does a decent spread of titles mostly.

Somewhat unorthodox maybe but I would also recommend gamegpu.com/ It's all in Russian but the google translate works fine, you are looking at bars and figures anyway so it doesn't really mattter. They seem to test most modern AAA and popular indie titles and have a very unbiased approach. At least as it seems to me.

@5RWill
@5RWill 8 лет назад
If the performance lives to what we've been shown at a lower price than intel it's already a success even if it loses to Kabby Lake which it likely will. The simple fact that they finally caught up in IPC terms from where they were with bulldozer puts them in a competitive spot in the market place assuming they can price accordingly. Seriously i think most of us expected Sandy Bridge/Ivy Bridge performance. Hopefully Zen overclocks decent and as the process matures, it OCs like Bulldozer. We might have all hated Bulldozer for a lot of reasons but the later renditions like Vishera had no issues clocking to 4.5ghz+ assuming you could control the heat. Which admittedly is a daunting task. I'm with you Adored i can't wait.

So what would be AMD's launch then? the 8 core is the full featured chip, the 4 would be the early binned 8cores with a faulty core? Or would they be producing 4 cores in a separate manufacturing line? Would that mean they bin the 8 cores with a faulty core for release as a 6 core later on in the year and bin 4's with a faulty core for dual cores around the same time? I'm generally new to looking into these things.

zen looks like exactly the solution ive been looking to recommend to others. I always want to recommend devils canyon due to its performance / price, but i hesitate because DDR3 RAM and the Z97 chipset are on their way out, instead I often just recomend skylake thanks to the Z170 chipset and DDR4 support, even thought the increase performance is small and the cost isnt justified. if zen can match broadwell it should just barely beat devils canyon in performance and the long lived AM4 socket with DDR4 support means it will last through an upgrade 3-5 years later when needed. as long as the price is right this could be the perfect CPU + mobo baseline for midrange gaming systems.

I have a question you have probably heard before,but why does it so long to build the architecture on a CPU.For example when you mention that once it's built they have to wait a year or more for the new ones,it just boggles my mind a bit..And then i hear about the architecture and the process,so they have the plans but still need to work on the process.all very confusing for me.If there is a brief way to explain this to me i would be very grateful thanks.(the things that throws me i guess that all this stuff getting talked about happens on that little square and why is that all so hard;)

Fully agree with MegaDutcher :-D I will upgrade to Zen once they'll have a CPU which is 50+ % faster core on core and on standard clock than my current (heavily oc'd) CPU. I assume that is not going to be the case before H2/2017. AdoredTV, what do you think how great the chance is that we will see a 480X somewhere in the next 6 months? I still assume GloFo will improve their process and hence the Polaris 10 will achieve higher clock speeds at lower voltages.

While the Intel 6900k was underclocked, the zen engineering sample was overclocked. We aren't talking huge differences in clock speed here between the two, being 400MHz at base and 500 at turbo, which equates to a 14% difference in stock clocks. Also the zen is reportedly a 95W TDP part, while the 6900K is a 140W TDP package. Overclocking the Intel can get to a reported 4.4GHZ, with huge voltage increases, watercooling and massive power draws and lots of heat. Remember that bulldozer was designed for clock speed, and piledriver holds the world record at 8.79GHz (2cores) and 8.72GHz with *all 8 cores* while broadwell e only manages 5.7GHz and skylake 6700k a measly 7.02GHz on a single core. I have little doubt that Zen will be able to match Intel on stock clock speeds and should be able to get decent overclocks on air given the engineering samples TDP package. (undoubtedly Zen will also come in 125W TDP or higher flavours). No doubt the extreme overclocker's won't take too long from release to fill us in on Zens potential. I predict that 8 core zens will start at 2.8-3.0 GHz (95W TDP) and go up to 3.4 base clock (125W TDP) on retail release with binning.
@danieldudas9026
@danieldudas9026 8 лет назад
Very healthy scepticism. I also think they can't really hit high frequencies, but the 4 cores should consume less power, and be more overclockable, so even if you could overclock a 4c8t zen to 3.5, then you would have a very good cpu for gaming, for probably less money than the i7.

It looks like the broadwell-E is actually a bit faster than zen for most of the test, and then the zen CPU just won at the end. Did anyone else notice that?

I want to buy a gaming laptop and I was expecting mobile Polaris cards to be launched but there's still too little info about it, yet alone the release date. I hope It won't only be limited to a couple of options which includes HP Omen (heard it on reddit) and Macbook Pro. I wish Dell would launch a budget laptop that has an Rx 480M since I was going to buy Dell Inspiron 7559 before I'm figured out Rx 480M would be a better option, Anyone here knows any recent news about it?

I think AMD left us a hint what clocks we can expect (ad least for 4 core variant) in that diagram at 1:34. As you can see Zen core should eat same power per clock as Excavator, and rumor have it 4 core cut down Zen will have TDP of 65W. There is actually AMD Excavator processor with same TDP ( Atlon X4 845) and it works at 3,5 GHz base, 3,8 GHz boost. I think similar clocks are likely in 4 core Zen if AMD is indeed targeting 65W for that SKU. For 8 core warrant it is a bit hard to tell because leaks put targeted TDP at 95W. I would speculate 3 GHz base, 3,3 GHz boost. Also I don't expect Zen will be good overclocker because it is really optimized for mobile and server service and not for desktop. And attempts at overclocking that Atlon X4 845 also produced very modest results. I expect low 4GHz range at best , often not even that. But I think at 3GHz and below Zen will be actually more power efficient then Intel offerings. Alas as desktop user I have no use for power efficiency, especially not at those low clocks so that's kind meh for me. Anyhow I'll still buy 4 core Zen at 3,5GHz base clock if the price is right (around 200 to 250$ before VAT ) Also thanks for the video. o7

Basically 3% slower then Skylake, but without any Intel Privilege Escalation Backdoors. I can imagine that security experts would prefere these server CPUs from AMD. At the other hand, everybody is a self-claimed expert today.

Try turning on Closed Captions it's not totally accurate but it sounds like that might work for you.

They did show Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, that game likes cores and SMT. 2kliksphilip did some testing and he did make some mistakes it seems, but this needs more testing. Btw the game is DX11 currently and will be getting a DX12 update eventually, though it favours AMD already (Glacier 2 based Dawn engine which was always happy with AMD tech anyway). Here's to hoping Nixxes refines the game more, it's a bit of a resource hog atm. Interesting times are coming. Thanks for the video.

it seems like a solid start for Zen, do you think Global foundries process will improve between now and launch? I think this might be why AMD pushed zen back to 2017.
@adoredtv

I think Zen is probably in mass production now so clocks will be finalized, but I expect to see improvements like what we used to get with the Phenoms for example, when we started at 3GHz but pretty quickly hit 3.6GHz and higher.

I hope they're not too locked down in their mind of the need of keeping TDP below 100W on an 8 core part. That too would end up keeping the clock speeds down, and at worst even mess with the overclocking ceiling.

I hope zen's later iterations would match skylake one day but intel might have 7nm CPUs by then.

i believe in zen even though GloFo has had some fuckups in the past and it may indeed take a while for the 14nm finfet process to pick up properly intel is widening their shinking intervals by a year because even they can hardly handle the r&d budgets involved, and even though their 14nm is still superior over samsung finfet, i think AMD zen gets some breathing room due to intel struggling with 10nm, the gaps won't be huge they don't have to beat intel on their top tier raw performance chip if the price is right, and i don't expect them to, seems like a hard feat to pull off i can't wait for single threaded numbers though, if it scores at least 1800 in cpu-z single threaded, i'm sold

also i read last week GloFo was going to skip 10nm as a whole and move right along to 7. so there may actually be a bit of hope for the future too. that was if globalfoundries didn't have a record of messing up new processes the last couple of years ;)

+Occupational Hazard globalfoundries, the semiconductor company once sprung off by AMD, but i think they sold all their shares by 2012 and the one they have been going to for wafers ever since they sold their own fabs

Noun: jaguar ('jag waar) --- 1. A large spotted feline of tropical America similar to the leopard; in some classifications considered a member of the genus Felis. ...... (sic) 2. A computer mother-board 'chip' by AMD. :)

An interesting video ( as always ). Let's hope that AMD will do something about the elephant in the room called Intel C Compiler. Bulldozer had a lower IPC than Intel's offers, but ICC compiled executables tend to exacerbate this parity.

put up whatever is the highest end current AMD CPU against a comparable core count Intel with the AMD FX overclocked and the Intel stock clocks... basically what I'm saying is that even if the Zen was 0.5 sec slower in that blender test, I'd be really impressed.

A nice insight, I think AMD is crippled by the manufacturing process and Zen architecture on Intel's very good manufacturing process will probably beat Intel, but only in 2018 they will get a mature process and probably release a new CPU based on Zen, and that's when we'll know exactly. I hate the waiting game...

Will Zen be also 2/4 4/4 and 4/8 for consumers ? I would not really see a point for making 4/4 equivalent to i3 2/4 since 6100 is sufficient for most people and runs even GTA5 with around 55FPS..

but wouldn't the new cpu architecture make it uncompatible with every single program that is compiled for x86 ?

microarchitecture =/= instruction set architecture. it still implements x64, just differently behind the scenes to how their previous x64 CPUs do (just as Intel's CPUs have different architectures).
