@@ramdevdirector6653 Gautam buddha real name was Siddhartha Gautam he was actually born in southern Nepal (which was earlier comming under India) and the place where Siddhartha gautam got enlightened and became Gautam *Buddha* and found *Buddhism* is Gaya a place bihar India But the zen Buddhism was carried by an Indian named *bodhidharma*
Thank you for talking about Zen. Zen leans on the Buddha dharma and the Wu Wei concept of Taoism. Don't complicate doing by too much thinking about doing, just do it, don't attach to what you like or dislike, it is all in a process of change. Treat people with kindness as we are all in a process of learning. We are all beginning anew every day.
Thank you for that. I have been struggling (to a degree) with finding what section of Buddhism fits how I feel, I think you just helped me come to a conclusion.
+Blazin 420 That's such chaff. Enlightenment is a concept, and so is the idea of celestial Buddhahood. Moreover, it is a belief system since Buddhas and bodhisattvas are worshiped in Zen Buddhism, with rituals inside temples.
Blazin 420 "they're acknowledged artistically, not worshipped" That's not true. Worshiping the Buddhas and bodhisattvas, who are understood to be concrete gods and not just mere symbols, is the whole point of Zen Buddhism. Many people in the West don't see this because 1) Zen Buddhism is not practiced in their countries, and 2) Westerners, through European colonialism, have forcefully appropriated Zen Buddhism and bastardized it into whatever they wanted. "and enlightenment is a realisation, not a concept, a concept for the ignorant perhaps" You don't seem to know the definition of concept in the first place. Enlightenment is a concept, just like every virtually every word in existence. You're just saying this because you want to sound special and smarter.
Zen comes from the word dhyāna which we do not have a proper English word for. As meditation would still be considered a improper translation based on how we define meditation as sitting quietly and thinking about something which is not what zen is.
That's an incredibly narrow definition. Zen is so much more than that. It's primarily a life philosophy but even that definition is pretty narrow and doesn't do it justice. Defining zen as just "meditation" is like saying the "earth" is just "dirt".
A key requirement to practice zazen is to first generate the mind of enlightenment, also known as the bodhi-mind. This distinguishes it from other styles of meditation and is the path of the bodhisattva. This is most commonly done through the Four Great Vows: Sentient beings are numberless; I vow to save them. Delusions are inexhaustible; I vow to put an end to them. The Dharmas are boundless; I vow to master them. The Buddha Way is unattainable; I vow to attain it.
This is a summary of Alan Watts's summary on Zen. No references to Koans, the lineage and Boddhidharma? Also, rinzai and soto? Hmmm.... the reason there is a specific term zazen is because it is a specific type of meditation involving generally no mantra and eyes open facing the wall. Being in the present moment is nice, but what about transcending duality? What about the non-abiding awareness? Very inaccurate unfortunately!
I partly agree with you. Even though this video was slightly inaccurate, it offers a greater introduction for regular western people who are dependent on words for understanding. "Zen is not words", as many have said, which makes it difficult for me to explain to my friends. But this video put it simpler for me in that way than I ever could have done myself
It’s only a summary of Zen Buddhism, a brief introduction, which by definition means focusing on only the main points and leaving out some of the details. We shouldn’t be so quick to judge a well intentioned video simply because we consider our own knowledge to be more in-depth.
So you're saying you can't truthfully say anything about zen. I get it, it can't be articulated, but how is this guy supposed to do a video about it? He's got to say something.
So the monks don't know what Zen is then. Is that right? Cause they say it's this and this guy says it's that, or whatever. Postmodernism in a nutshell. Or is their some actual underlying philosophy there, which we wouldn't matter anyway cause the people who made it obviously "missed the point."
A couple of books you may want to try are Three Pillars of Zen, and Zen Dawn In The West. Both are Written by Philip Kapleau. These books are easy to read, and will give you as much information as you need without making your head hurt.
Do you know that Bodhidharma brought the founding practices of Zen from South India? He was a prince from Kanchipuram in South India. I can see some of the influence of Southern Indian martial arts on the Shaolin martial arts scene. Goes to show how the world always benefitted when wise unprejudiced approach to knowledge by any people resulted in the extraordinary. Sadly the world is courting another dark age by the fallacy of a pure cultural identity as if we never borrowed from each other!
Very useful video. Thank you. Concise and informative. If I may make a suggestion, the music was a bit loud and distracting. I know, not very Zen of me to be able to ignore it. Or maybe that was the lesson inside the lesson?
no "om" mantra in zazen 🙊(also no visualization) just watch wallpaint dry (while the mind sees the mind) and (maybe) the heart sutra end ... dropping off mind and body (soto-style) OR go the koans route (rinzai-style)
how do you not have more subscribers? I'm gonna recommend you to all my friends! I absolutely love lerning new things and educating myself, your channel explains a lot of small things that are good to know and broaden one's horizon perfectly. Keep up the good work!!
The word Zen simply means meditation. I've practiced Zen for 30-40 years, and it has no concepts, no beliefs, nothing but meditation and a few common sense ideas on right thought, right speech, etc. It is not Buddhism, as Buddhists have beliefs. The meditation (one can be seated, walking, practicing mindfulness, etc) is always the same.....following your breath. After a short while, the mind calms down, and if we sit diligently we "wake up". That can be singular, or plural. The meditation can be taught in 3 minutes, but it is very difficult to maintain day after day, year after year due to our habitual, discursive minds. But it works. It will wake us up from our beliefs, our habits, our delusions, our philosophies, etc. It puts us in the present moment, where our "true" self lives. The ego always lives in the past or the future, which are illusions. Only the present moment is real.
how simply all can be transformed in to a wrong an understanding. zen is a man activity from empty mind, witch see all situations as it is, without dividing in to positive or not. not a philosophy, but state of mind, you have or not.
lmao...maybe spiritual experience monkey would be more fitting but the guy is probably making videos about all types of topics, zen just being one of the topics so let's try to give him a break.
I stopped listening 37 seconds in when the narrator said Zen is a belief system. It is not a belief system. It is not a faith. This person has no idea what he is talking about.
Right. Zen is a process to get people to realize the Ultimate Reality. The title of an Alan Watts book, "This Is It" are the closest English words to the Taoist's description, "That which can't me named."
@@aiyman75 so, in taoism, tao is unspeakable. What you say is never can be tao. So, if zen is a hybrid of buddhism and taoism, this means you get further from it as much as you describe it. Therefore, telling Zen is lie is same as telling Zen is Zen. And zen is not zen. What is zen? Why is zen? Zazen. What you need isn't enlightenment, you already have that. Stop looking and stop listening. See. Hear. Bye.
Zen Buddhism is came from south India, during Sangam age and medieval and there massive trade between south India and China, Korea and Japan, south India bought culture impact in East Asia eg : Dravidian Korean language, martial arts, Buddhism and Indian school of philosophy.. there is biased research done by western historian so they never came in lime light but still well documented in some ancient tamil texts..... if anybody think there are fake just do research on yourself link between Dravidian and asia culture... even Cambodian Angkor wat temple is belong to Dravidian architecture (south Indian architecture)...
Zen- distortion of Buddhism Well. Practicing Zen Buddhism is actually practicing the Pacceka Buddha's path. One who enlightens without definition and ends up without definition. He comes to know but in fact he can't share a single knowledge what he knows. He has knowledge but limited in the core of itself. It's not useful to help others, without definitions. Learn about Three Types of buddhas and you'll find it. Don't follow anything blindly. Pacceka Buddha is unable to teach a single word.
@@gotem370 You won’t get magical vegan illnesses from eating plants. Ignoring the blatant environmental impacts, drinking animal br3ast milk won’t save you from made up deficiencies that only eating animal flesh will get rid of. Our ancestors died at around 30 just because they consumed animal products that were not properly cooked. Getting back to zen, you cannot live at all if you cannot live in the present. All suffering, anxiety and depression comes from living in anger, fear and delusion which is living in the future and not realising the present.
Buddhism came from India (present-day Nepal) and was combined with Taoism in China to create "Zen Buddhism". The teachings have aspects of both of those philosophies so technically you can say they are from both countries.
What? Buddhism only exists between the ears of 'believers' in ' Buddhism. Some of the others among us know that what you call 'Buddhahood' is only the workings of the genius, and more, intelligence we each received at the moment of our respective creations. Once an individual spends enough time exploring their innate intelligence, this point becomes exceedingly clear. Buddhahood is a zenful, mokshaful, jhanaful, delightful place to be. Would that all you Buddhism practitioners could spend as much time there as I do.
Great video but Zen comes from a Buddhist Indian monk called Bodhidharma. Bodhidharma travelled from 6th century India to China. In China, Bodhidharma gave the Chinese people zen and kung fu.
zen is not from china it was one part of buddhism so started in india and become popular in china because chinese emperor were obsessed about buddism. and introduce to japan.
Not exactly. Zen borrows from Buddhism as much as it borrows from Taoism (from China). Buddhism also started in Nepal originally (Siddharta, the prince was from Nepal, not India).
A Zen master was cleaning the monastery garden. A novice monk rushed out and said: 'I have discovered the meaning of Zen'. What is it, the master asked? It is the here and now. Rubbish, said the master. Would you like me to tell you the meaning of Zen? Please do, replied the monk. It is the here and now, replied the master.
@@JohnDoe-gg7er The master lived in the 'here and now'. Cleaning the garden was part of his life. The novice monk should have picked up a broom and began sweeping or something to demonstrate that he understood this. Actions speak louder than words.
Its no belief system ,zen doesn't belong to anything not even to the idea of zen ,in fact anything belongs to zen ,its all there is,there isn't a place where its not.Zen is totally free .
The first sentence is correct but you are confusing the SH out of people with the second - especially newcomers to zen. The correct way to phrase this is to say "zen is a spiritual experience and cannot be understood with words or through intellectualization".
If this video were re-edited to cut off one Ah-om at the beginning or end, plus the "Be sure to subscribe" blurb -- it would be three minutes long. As claimed.
You take it as wrong.....! It is only not living in a moment it is also about consciousness...... being conscious about your thought, that are may be about future or past..... You have to just conscious about everything that coming into your mind....! 😇
Yeah man you are doing it wrong. Living "consciously" doesn't mean quit your job and become a monk - nothing wrong with being a monk if that's what you want to do but zen doesn't teach you to become a loser or sit home all-day and meditate lol. Also - your ambition is based on TESTOSTERONE - a hormone in your body.
