This is my dining etiquette reaction video to Zendaya eating Italian Food for Vogue India.
I was not scheduled to release a video today (Tuesday) because I post on Wednesdays or Thursdays but today is an exception since it is my birthday!
I wanted to make something special for all of you, my loyal viewers, who have been so kind, loving and caring towards me throughout my RU-vid journey. I would not have been where I am right now without each and every one of you! This video is for you as a token of my gratitude. It was shot impromptu but I think it turned out to be better than any other video that I have planned. What I have learned this year is that things that come to you spontaneously in life are the best ones.
Huge thanks to JW Marriott Absheron Baku Hotel for the venue.

Jamila I don't know if you will ever read this comment, but I just wanted to say thank you! I just recently found your channel and I absolutely love your videos. I've been at a small but sweet cafe this morning, for a breakfast date and I applied all your tips on etiquette. I felt so good at the end! I didn't make a mess of the table, leaving crumbs everywhere or got my fingertips sticky with food or had the need to constant wipe my mouth because of crumbs or Marmelade. I used to think I'm just a clumsy person, but really, I just never learned how to eat correctly. I can't explain how good I feel about myself now and that's because of you. Thank you for making all this content available and free for everybody!

I think it would be great if you could do a video about the "why" behind table manners. There are so many comments like "Let ppl eat the way they want" and ppl perceiving table manners as stiff. But while some of them are "over the top", most of them are sheer politeness. Like not forcing others to hear you eat, not forcing others to see food in your full mouth, not excluding others from conversation by blocking them from your seat neighbour by putting your arms and elbows in their line of sight, not expecting others to be fine with you touching food on shared plates

Classes are always trying to separate themselves from each other, and I’ve seen first hand how people who care immensely about these trivial things sometimes look down on others. Perhaps there is a time and a place for this nitpicking, but it’s not all the time and everywhere. That’s nonsense.

My Italian nonno (grandfather) taught me when I was a kid. You take a fork and spoon and twirl the spaghetti onto the fork while nesting it in the spoon. The spoon keeps too many noodles from twirling onto the fork. You end up with little bite sized ball of noodles on the fork. I actually found an old kid's book "spaghetti manners" that describes the process. It's hard to explain in text form though. I'm sure RU-vid has a video showing the process

here in Italy there is no way: - you'll ever be allowed to cut off your own slice or piece of firm cheese from a tagliere (board). firm cheese should already come in pre-cut slices you can easily pick without making a mess - you'll ever be expected to help yourself with your own rice ball (or whatever) from a shared serving platter, unless you're at a very informal dining place. Waiters are there to provide each guest with their own portion - you'll ever have pasta or lasagnE (with an E, since it's a plural form) served in a bowl. Pasta and lasagnE are served in flat dishes; soups are the only type of first course we serve in bowls I wonder why Italian food is constantly associated with loud, boisterous, messy manners. Do Vogue editors think we are cave-dwellers here, or what? How disrespectful. Thank you Jamila for explaining there's actually proper etiquette behind our cuisine, food is a form of religion here and it deserves respect

In the US, there is a LOT of pressure for celebrities to look as thin as possible while making it seem effortless, but “relatable”. Celebs who want to remove negative stigma/questions regarding their exceptionally slim figures tend to place high emphasis on being seen and photographed extravagantly enjoying food. I think, these actresses and models are eating with extreme specific intention to appeal to the masses as “one of us”

Yes this is very true! I was surprised at this video as someone who eats informally. Half of the things Zendaya was doing didn't even seem comfortable, like waving spoons in the air, having her elbows high above the table, and having a fork clash with her teeth. She's definitely exaggerating. Nowadays people pressure celebrities to be "relatable" otherwise they are called stuck up. Which is funny because #1, celebrities will never actually be relatable, and #2 they complain about famous people being fake all the time meanwhile they're literally asking for them to be fake and pretend to be "one of them" so that they don't feel bad about themselves.

At the end of the day it's really not that deep, and honestly it made me feel a bit robotic to over-obsess over every little detail, I couldn't even enjoy the moment because I was over thinking about having the right etiquette. Zendaya is one of my fav. girls….a sweetheart she is, but my word 😮🙄 those indelicate hand movements combined with the blue eye shadow) which on its own is very nice), but this combination is making her look rough and mean. I find eating burgers (especially if it has a lot of toppings) and chicken to be way more difficult to eat gracefully than spaghetti. One day I was eating chicken thighs for lunch, and I’m sitting there with chicken juice all over my fingers just looking like a messy child lol. I look over at my co-worker and she’s eating her chicken with a knife and fork, looking so poised and feminine. That was the day I realized I needed to learn proper dining etiquette 😂

Actually here in Italy I was told the lasagna, being a "primo" (first course) should be eaten only with the fork using the side to cut pieces and not the knife. This being said...I have a feeling most people here just use the knife because if the sides are a bit dry it is easier.

Italian here, not true at all. I eat lasagna and ravioli (if they aren't super small, they usually aren't) with fork and knife, like the majority of the people at the restaurant. Same way for eggplant parmesan and other similar stuff like crespelle. Eating those kind of food only with fork is messy because it's more difficult to create bite size pieces in a neat way. :)

Thank you for the video. I've been taught that traditionally one always turns a fork upright before bringing food to the mouth. I'm not sure when it becamse into pop culture to eat with a fork upside down. But no. We never do this. Cut your food, pierce with fork, turn fork right side up, then into mouth. =) Hence the design of a fork, allowing the fork to remain upside down allows risk of dropping food on the way to your mouth. Turning it right side up, is how it was designed to function.

Of course, everything said in this video is correct and if it's simply meant as an illustration, it can be very helpful. However, I think what some of the comments (more-so than the video itself) are completely disregarding is that "expectations of the situation you're in" trumps everything else. In this case, it would make viewers feel less at ease if she followed every etiquette rule and doing so would therefore be a bigger faux pas that not following them.
@ilovesunsets
@ilovesunsets 2 года назад
@@miraj5569 I'm not even sure she actually knows any etiquette, that is the problem. If we as a society need to act dumb or like we're "regular, everyday people from middle class" and it looks like Zendaya is portraying it, I'd rather be considered a snob than a monkey in a golden dress
@miraj5569
@miraj5569 2 года назад
@@ilovesunsets You're not sure she doesn't either, though. If you are fine being considered a snob, then go for it, but she did the expectations of this situation justice and that is a valid choice too. I would also like to add that calling a black woman a monkey showcases an amount of either ignorance or hatred that is a very bad look on someone who puts so much emphasis on being classy (or, you know, a decent human being).

@@miraj5569 It wasn't my intention to sound racist, I didn't even know she was black, and yes, I would use the same word for anyone else in the world who eats like this. Trying to appear as down to earth and waving your fork around, chewing/talking with your mouth open is just a very wrong way of appearing down to earth.
