Zenith Allegro w/ BSR Record Player Restore

Zenith Allegro model JR588W. This unit has an AM/FM Radio, Cassette Tape Player and BSR model C129R2 Record Player. The record player was needing to be cleaned out of the old grease (as usual) and the tape player needed a drive belt and extensive cleaning. Not a hard retore and learned alot about common issues that happen over time. Thanks for watching.

Wow--I had this record player from age 10-17 (1976-1984) and it was still (sort of) functional in our basement laundry room into the early 90's. Started by playing Disney records and went all the way through Kiss and on to Blondie and new wave. Your video really took me back--great repair know-how and remarkable patience. This machine was the start of my lifelong joy of music and an obsession with audio equipment. I loved my record player so much, I even wrote a poem about. Seeing it again and watching it spin brought good tears to my eyes. Thanks for posting.

I have the bsr record changer, sometimes when putting on multiple records, more than 1 record may plop down. Generally if I align the records at the farthest point away from the leaver that shifts to drop a record it helps. Sometimes the inconsistencies in the pressing of records can make one or more than one extra record plop down. I at one time had a Zenith Allegro which I put a different bsr turntable in because the Zenith one did not work right. The 8-track player didn't work, the belt was too loose and I didn't have time to get it repaired. The major problem I had with it was that it had excessive bass which I needed to turn down, otherwise it played beautifully. I ended up getting newer speakers for it, the thruster speakers were buzzing like crazy. One note, you don't need to turn main power on if playing a record, the turntable has a built in shut off mechanism so you can play record and after end cycles off.

A generation gap. Some changer’s have a MAN setting. Thus will allow the changer to function with the control arm in either position. An example is the RCA.

Just fyi. I used to use wd40 also but I’ve completely switched to IPA with a bunch of small brushes I’ve got. It works great and no wd40 nasty residue to wipe out and then clean that off also. Most of the alcohol evaporates and just a wipe off is needed you don’t have to wash out the wd40. Just a thought. But you do good work

Hey thanks for the comment. Yes IPA works really well, I do use it from time to time. Using wd40 is more of a old habit I think than anything. Appreciate the feedback and great suggestion.

Thanks for this video. almost the same phono mechanism with my Sanyo JXT 6420. Can we put multipurpose grease for it ( Car grease)

I recommend something thinner. Heavier grease will effect performance, sound and probably will need to be changed more often due to tendency to dry out faster. Lithium white grease is a good modern alternative to phono grease. Which is not available now.

Let me get this straight, with a record changer you have to have stacked records in order to keep the arm up so you can play one record?, I have a Mesa 65sv, what if I just want to play one record? How do I keep the arm up without stacking some more?

HI, you can play one record at a time. The control arm is designed to stay up when you lift and swing the control arm out of the way away from the platter. This gives you access to place a record on and when you push the start/auto switch it will auto place the needle on the record. In this start position the player is designed to always place the needle on the record. If left in this positon, when record ends the tone arm will pick up go back to the start, replace the needle on start of record and play it again. Giving the player a repeat mode. If you would like to player to stop when it gets to the end of the record. You start the player as suggested and once the record is playing, manually swing the control to the centre of the platter. The control arm should drop placing it now in the stop postion and when the record is done the player will pick up the tone arm and place it in its rest and stop the motor. Hope this helps. Hi there, Awesome video. I recently picked up the exact same model as you but I'm having some trrouble with the platter. I cannot for the life of me get it unstuck from the center bearing. I have tried a combination of WD40, 3 in 1 oil, isopropyl alchohol, and my soldering gun. I've had it soaking in the oil for two nights now. I was wondering if there were any suggestions? thanks!

Hi, that sounds severe. Well , you may want to try a heat gun if you have one or a high heat hair dryer. 🤔 Maybe small torch or a bbq lighter. Careful not to melt the plastic. Invert the player and stick the flame in the hole with spindle out. And alot of patience. I hope you are successful. Here is a video from a pro I like for more help. Were you able to remove the autoplay spindle first? The tools that I use are a heat gun and a 25 watt soldering iron. Also, to protect the platter from heat warping, I placed a cork turntable mat over it. What I did next is put several drops of 3-in-1 oil between the spindle and spindle hole, place the cork turntable mat over platter, and heat up the spindle with the heat gun. Heat it for about 30 seconds or so, and then you can pull out the spindle; do like a slight twisting motion when pulling (remember to wear heat resistant gloves first). After you get the spindle off, drop the hot soldering iron down the spindle hole shaft and heat it for 5-10 minutes; that should soften and melt the old grease which is causing the platter to seize. Once the platter frees up, rotate it back and forth gently while pulling it up at the same time to remove it off the shaft. Hopefully that did the trick
