Welcome to episode 170 of the Commander's Guild: "I'm Griffin You a Beatdown" Every week I go to scryfall.com and randomly select a card, making a budget (under $100) commander deck around it and showcasing a gameplay video of the deck. This week I'm joined by Chris, Brian, and Foxy.

This week's random card is Decorated Griffin and uses Zeriam, Golden Wind as the commander. Griffins are notoriously bad creatures in Magic, often occupying a filler common or uncommon slot and maxing out at 3-4 power. What if, though, we made a 2/2 Griffin every single time one of our Griffins connected with an opponent? That's what Zeriam adds to the deck and that sends the power of Griffins skyrocketing.

This has to be my all-time favorite match on this channel. All the decks performed well, the game went back and forth, and it was overall extremely exciting! Loved this episode!!! ❤

I've always dreamed of building a griffin deck. I like these little-represented creatures because of their weakness.

It is refreshing to have a very linear deck sometimes. Out creatures on the table, attack, protect. That's it.

As a massive fan of mono white in commander I really enjoyed watching this episode, but I just wanted to point out that banding unfortunately doesn’t work quite like that. A creature with banding can form a band with any number of other creatures that also have banding but it can only form a band with a maximum of one creature that doesn’t have banding.

I have a jewelled lotus without a home that I think would be very fun to run in a budget griffin brew that triples the cost of the deck by itself. It sounds silly to say, but people really a sleep on how stupidly overpowered it is to have your whole board flying. Also: Raffine is an underrated menace. If anyone is reading this and hasn't played it, you kill that player ASAP and you hold up a Bog or some Graveyard hate for that player no matter what.

Jeweled Lotus letting you cast Zeriam on turn 1 feels incredibly strong. And I completely agree on killing the Raffine player, they’re always a menace.

@@DungeonLearnersGuide that one cracked card that turns a jank pile into a threat. My izzet Bilbo with Umezawa's Jitte has this energy 😂

@granite_4576 that’s some sweet tech! Honestly, that’s kind of why I like this deck because even though Zeriam isn’t expensive he just kicks the deck into overdrive. It would be almost nonexistent without him.

@@DungeonLearnersGuide powerful engine without being too obvious. I really like commanders like this. It's extremely satisfying to pull off a win against the most cracked of decks with one of these guys - me slurping on the jodah player's tears after stomping him with my Boros myojin deck. truly shows that a simple strategy and the right pieces (ie draw and interaction) are what really counts.

Zeriam seems like it would be a broken commander if it were almost any other creature type. A fun budget commander is always cool. Loved the back and forth during the game
