Cut-Rate Commander - Precon Upgrade Guide for Spirit Squardon
Finishing off the Commander Precons for Innistrad Crimson Vow, we'll be upgrading the recent Spirit Squadron deck lead by Millicent, Restless Revenant.
Aiming to get Millicent on the board as quickly as possible to flood the board with spirit tokens, we'll be tweaking the core build to include more evasive spirits that don't just help reduce our commanders cost, but then help her get more spirits into play as they swing in, safely dodging blockers thanks to their evasion. And since we're in Azorius, we have plenty of spirits matters pay offs to insure that our spirits don't stay small for long and generate us value as we play them. And then we add a handful of counter spells and protection sources to insure our board doesn't get blown away by well placed removal/wipes and our opponents will find themselves overwhelmed by Millicent and her angry torrent of vengeful souls.
Let me know if the comments below if you agree with my choices and/or what you would add to the deck instead. Also, let me know know who you would like to see next by voting on in the comments on the three choices of commander listed at the end of the video.

THIS. This is a truly great upgrade video. It's concise, gives reasons on card choices and gameplan, and overall is very very solid. Only bit of possible advice is actually for the description. Maybe add a link to the cards getting added/replaced? Understandably it's some extra effort, but I can see the utility of it for some folks who just want the 'down and dirty' of it. Outside of that, this hits the nail on the head!

Glad you enjoyed it! That's a good suggestion... Maybe I'll include a spreadsheet or something in the future video's description to show all the replacements - if I can figure out where to upload it.

Being a lover of the afterlife myself and spirits being fitting of this momentous holiday for us all I figured this would be the perfect video to wish you Grazzet a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year. We all await patiently for our first cut-rate or pre-con upgrades in the new year

Thanks for the video, bought the cards as mentioned and looking forward to trying it. However, after purchasing the cards and going back to this to swap them out, I realized you only mention 25 cards being cut but adding 28. That puts this deck over the 100 card limit for commander, therefore making it illegal. What are the other 3 cuts?

May I suggest you include a second deck list in the expanded description so that people can only purchase the cards you are adding to the deck? I already own the precon so I would have to check one against the other to see what wouldn't need to be purchased.

I have been including the full list of swaps in the newer deck techs, but have not revisited the old ones to include them. Let me see if I have the list for this one to put in as a pinned comment!

I took the deck in a bit of a different direction maintaining the strong token theme but also going with an enchantment theme as there are several really strong enchantments specifically for spirits that mesh really well here. For instance because we want our non token spirits to either die or deal combat damage to opponents we should consider running martyr's bond which yes costs 4WW but anytime our spirits die with this out by any means our opponents are forced to sacrifice their creatures as well or any other permanents that share a type with them. Song of the worldsoul is an enchantment at a CMC of also 4WW is also quite something else worth considering to expand our spirit squadrons as now not only will we be producing 1/1 flying spirit tokens whenever our non token spirits connect or die but also now whenever we cast spells as song of the world soul has us populate whenever we cast spells and it's not limited to a one time trigger so the more spells we cast the more spirits we get. The last enchantment I'm recommending is literally saving the best for last: Hallowed haunting indeed an extremely powerful white enchantment that can give us some much need punch and momentum at a CMC of 2WW it reads as follows as long as we control seven or more enchantments creatures we control have flying and vigilance and whenever we cast an enchantment spell which is a big chunk of my deck itself we get a spirit cleric token whose power and toughness are each to the number of spirits we control including itself. As far as I'm concerned one would be insane not to at least consider playing hallowed haunting in a spirit deck and is the primary reason and motivation why I went spirit enchantment tribal with this deck. I came up with a new name for my spirit deck "enchanted afterlife" because of the fact I am playing a lot of spirit support and spirits alike but also because no I am not playing all that many auras but I am playing a very healthy number of enchantments in my deck to further augment my spirits thus why I've gone from "spirit squadron" to "enchanted afterlife" as that is pretty much what has happened with my deck's build in a really good way

Does anyone know if it’s possible to make a good upgrade by combining both the Spirit squadron and Phantom Premonition decks? I have both precons and am new to magic so I’m looking to combine them to make a better deck but I haven’t had any luck finding videos or anything giving a deck list :/

Great Stuff as always, sir. I know you don't like to "look at the past" with the commanders and the decks, but you should really take a look at the dimir zombies guy from midnight hunt. It's a fun, strong, and at least in my area, sold out deck. Maybe you could add "upgrade tiers" of say, $30, $60 and $90, to flesh out the decks even more. I don't know, just some ideas. Happy to see you back on track. Cheers!

Thanks for this video! I've been using the base deck and love to use it! I have a question though! I pretty much got your upgrade card for card because I loved the direction you took it! But I grabbed one more card, Ao the Dawn Sky, that I was wondering would be a good replacement for Oyobi, who I don't think really works really well in this deck because the deck is lower on ramp, and is probably just gonna get removed while you tap out your entire turn to play it. While Oyobi gives tokens, Ao will probably get you value on its way out, and can potentially cheat your smaller dudes out, God willing you hit something. Not to mention all the ETB's in the deck already and is flying and a spirit :) What do you think? Any other newer cards that really scream a good deal to put in the deck? Thanks again! I've been binging these deck upgrade guides!
@GrazzetMTG
@GrazzetMTG 2 года назад
Ao the Dawn Sky would be a fine replacement for Oyobi, Who Split the Heavens. While I like the extra spirits Oyobi can get into play, you are correct that it can easily get removed before we get any value out of them. Meanwhile Ao is lower on the curve, still fits the spirit theme, and makes our wide boards get bigger on death - all of which fits nicely into the build. Hope that helps!

What a ghastly performance! Well, I gotta say, it is pretty clear, transparently even, that this is quite the potent upgrade! Regardless, I am compelled to make it go through testing! Hopefully my puns served their purpose well enough to preserve the spirit of this comment section, as this deck ascends its mortal preconstructed coil. So far the only way I can see you upgrade these precon-upgrade videos is a vote in the end, like the cut-rate series, or something similar. Maybe let anyone that buys you a coffee a precon upgrade recommendation? Kinda like a patreon thing? Then again, I understand if you want to keep things simple for the time being, as there is still a bit more that you need to do in order to become, as Spamton the Wise once said, a [[BIG SHOT]]. Day 129 of waiting for Grazzet's face reveal. Have you tried out Inscryption yet? And if you have/haven't, what do you think about it? (Also, sorry if you are sick of hearing about this game everywhere. I know the pain of being sick of a thing quite well. I call it the Despacito-Squid Game Syndrome.)

Thanks for the feedback! I may end up adding some engagement at the end of the pre-cons or shorter form video format's in the future - maybe to other shorter form video selections - to have some more engagement, since it does incentivize folks to stick around until the end. The dontation suggestion is defintily one way to do it - may have to look into that further. I have not played Inscryption myself, but have seen a fair few folks play it around youtube - looks like an interesting take on a tactical card game with horror elements.
@pablocastillo5396
@pablocastillo5396 2 года назад
I agree with this mysterious line here. Some engagement would be nice, maybe even some link with previous cut rate commanders, like "this card could be good for our old Carth-One eyed deck" and whatnot, since the precons usually come packing with nice reprints.

Would you blanket add rhystic study to any blue commander deck? That was a solid 15 minutes of explanation on this deck and I enjoyed them all. Thank you sir
@GrazzetMTG
@GrazzetMTG 2 года назад
Glad you enjoyed it! And yeah, if you have Rhystic Study or are willing to pay up for it, it is almost an auto include in every deck with blue in it - the amount of draw it provides is incredibly valuable and the amount of annoyance it will generate at the table every time you ask "will you pay the 1" is priceless.

2:31-2:46 I love how you display Azorius as "evil" here as this color pair is often described as lawful neutral to lawful good with no ounce of evil in it and I have a strong love for spirits and the afterlife to the point that spirits are my absolute favourite tribe in Innistrad with werewolves being a close second. My only question is how do spirits represent Azorius from a lore and/or flavour standpoint and perspective as I see them as much more of an Orzhovan(WB) tribe with White spirits representing respect for ancestry and Black spirits represent the restless exploited dead and blue as a color usually has nothing associated with life or death itself so the blue feels out of place for me in spirits but if it were a Black and White tribe this would make a lot more sense to me. So as I'm requesting can you or somebody else explain how the spirits of Innistrad are primarily Azorius and not Orzhov and thanks in advance
