This was an exciting one!! Go and watch • Franklin Motorcycles |... first as it'll explain how this came about. I review the Zero Motorcycles DS, complete first ride review and what an impressive bike! I've been wanting to try an electric bike for a long time and was very wary of how much I'd like/dislike them but what a surprise!
I was not paid to make this nor given any other incentives, all of the opinions expressed in this video are my own.
I'm delighted to be able to review this and a huuge thanks to @Franklin_Motorcycles(follow them on instragram, tell them I sent you) for giving me the opportunity to do so. More to come and hopefully even more after that :)
If you enjoyed this review be sure to check out the rest of my reviews and leave a like, subscribe and set the old bell thing to all :)
Thanks for watching!

I had a great experience with Franklin Motorcycles over testing this and the other bikes I rode over the day. Give them a follow on Instagram and Facebook and tell them I sent you :) Anyway as for the bike it's a great little machine overall. Don't forget to watch the intro video(link in description) that explains how this came about. Thanks for watching.

Nice video! been keeping an eye on Zero for a while and really happy to see a proper dealer here in Ireland. Driving an electric car but hoping to add an electric bike at some stage in the future if/when my commute gets longer and for a bit of fun. Agree on pricing, hopefully it comes down a bit.
@TheGorillaBiker
@TheGorillaBiker 5 лет назад
Thanks! A proper dealer and they're absolute gents to deal with, I approached a few different places about doing this type of video and they're one of the only ones who actually responded and were extremely helpful. I've tried the E Golf and Leaf, I would have one of these over either tbh - but I'm more a bike person anyway. To be honest if you were commuting a fair whack every week and had free/cheap charging at work or anything it really doesn't work out too bad. But if you already have a bike that only stands you 3k, like me, and isn't going to die any time soon then it's a harder sell. I imagine prices will come down with uptake, same as anything! Thanks for watching.

Cracking review man! Really knowledgeable and in-depth. I find a lot of bike "reviews" are just a load of waffle but this makes sense with a good combination of facts & craic haha! I quite like the look of it too but I can't wait to see what some mods people do/custom paint jobs. Can't wait to see the other 2 monsters you rode! :) *EDITING THIS AS I WATCHED UNTIL THE END* Hearing the ticking is bloody mad haha! What camera did you use for the last photos by the way? They're unreal!
@TheGorillaBiker
@TheGorillaBiker 5 лет назад
Thanks man I really appreciate that :) It takes a lot of editing to chop out my ramblings into somthing half way sensible 😂😂 oh yeah definitely and aftermarket parts and such. It's a really good base for custom work just because you don't have to worry about affecting fuelling etc. I'll hopefully have them out next week :) Haha I do edited comments all the time don't worry 😂 It actually shocked me, I only had the camera left on in case someone tried to murder me then I heard that! It's a nikon d3500, then I edited the photos slightly :) when we meet up I'll bring it out sure I'd love to take photos of your bike for ya!

You hit the nail on the head, the best application for an electric bike will be commuting, especially if you work for a company that will allow one to charge their vehicle at work (for free.) If Zero was smart, they add some panniers and a real luggage rack and sit back and collect the bitcoin. Great review.
@TheGorillaBiker
@TheGorillaBiker 5 лет назад
Yeah and you'd hope most would as its really never going to be much for most companies added on to their bill! 100% the issue is payload. This bike is limited to 169kg. That's its max. So with me on there you can only carry max 40kg....which would be fine I suppose. Thanks for watching man!
@theoldmanflynchmotovlog4846
@theoldmanflynchmotovlog4846 5 лет назад
The GorillaBiker I doubt anyone would carry much more than that, but they want it to be secure and dry.
@TheGorillaBiker
@TheGorillaBiker 5 лет назад
That true enough I meant more for 2 up for me it's too low, so it's a 1 + gear thing for me. But yeah some good panniers and a rack and it's be even more appealing to commuters!

Great review, but until we can sort the range and charge time... I'll be sticking with the internal combustion engine.... I just couldn't use it as a toy. Biker cafes will not be sustainable for sunny Sunday blasts unless they can fit 100+ charging points, and I'd never be able to do 600+ miles in a day.
@TheGorillaBiker
@TheGorillaBiker 5 лет назад
Thanks man! Tbh range would be fine if they just sorted charge time! Yeah agreed on everything you said there. I would use it as a commuter quite happily if it was cheaper! The lack of heat in traffic is lovely and the lack of maintenance would be handy too for a commuter :)

I am glad that there is a European alternative to Zero: Charge the Energica quickly with a 21.5 kW battery and 25 kW.

Lovely bike to ride and it's a bit of fun. You should try the DS/R. ;-) I've tried that and the DS. Mad bikes to ride, especially in sport mode. Such awesome power. But, without clutch and gears, it's a weird feeling to start off with. But, you get used to it. It would be very practical for me. I can charge it where I park at home, and I'm only hopping in and out of the city per day. 20 min commute in, and 30 min commute home. I'd only need to charge it once a week with that distance.
@TheGorillaBiker
@TheGorillaBiker 5 лет назад
I'd try any bike available to be honest :) But they do look very nice. They very quick for a small bike in fairness, I'd definitely have one as part of my "money is no object shed" Absolutely I was used to it after 5 mins but I'd still miss banging through gears, I dunno would that ever wear off! So you'd be thinking as a second commuter bike too? It'd be ideal for me as that as well.
@photobiker4309
@photobiker4309 5 лет назад
@@TheGorillaBiker I already have two bikes. ;-) 800GSA and Indian Scout Bobber. I use the GS for riding two up and for over-night/weekend spins. The Bobber is for city riding and short weekend spins. Yeah, if money was no object, the Zero would be a better commuter bike, no doubt.
@TheGorillaBiker
@TheGorillaBiker 5 лет назад
Oh nice! We have similar tastes it would seem....mine are just more poverty stricken :D I really liked the scout I test rode, do you have slip ons on it or standard cans? Agreed....as a third...maybe fourth bike eh :P

@@TheGorillaBiker Give me a shout sometime and I can show you the bobber. Mine is quite different from the stock one. I changed the suspension, the seat, the headlight, the exhaust. I went for a Miller exhaust - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Zf_tsCafWbU.html

I only need a commuter bike, i have never really been a long distance rider, i tool around in the mountains where i live and would ride it to work which is 21 miles(33ish KM), i can charge it at work back to full. My main question, and i think you mentioned you are tall.. i'm 6ft 1 inch tall. Do you think i would be comfortable on this? I've always ridden cruisers/Harleys, but i really wanna make changes for the environment, tryin to decide if i should get one of these or wait and hope like hell someone comes out with an affordable... as in $12,000 or under, electric cruiser in the US in the next 5 years.
@TheGorillaBiker
@TheGorillaBiker 3 года назад
Ah it'd easily do a return trip at that either! I'm 6'7, you'd be perfect on the DS tbh. It was a really comfy bike and was a fun amount of power, I'd relate it to like a 500cc inline twin maybe. Test ride one of these if you can, if you've never tried this style you may even love it :) I haven't heard of any proper cruiser electric in development, I suppose the distance most cruiser riders do probably means the style doesn't lend itself to it yet.

I like them. I like the looks, it has the kind of power I like and the quietness, while not as aurally pleasing as a screaming 4cyl for example, is nice in its own right. Way too expensive and no use to me where I live. When the technology gets to a point where it does 400km on a charge and can be charged in >30 mins, i'd definitely have one.
@TheGorillaBiker
@TheGorillaBiker 5 лет назад
100% agree with all of this. I enjoyed it far more than I thought I would. Yeah to be honest it would actually suit me quite well for short spins and commuting....but it's just too pricey for now

I sold my EV after 9 years EV motoring and my 3rd electric car and went back to petrol manual. Once you get over the new experience and the torque electric cars have little to offer only insanely boring experience with range and charge times still major issues and cost and trade in values. I could not find anyone to take my ID3 VW electric car as trade in, not even VW dealer I bought it from wanted it back so I handed it back to the finance company. The car has software issues and I did not like having so many functions controlled by a touch screen, it was dangerous and infuriating having to fumble through menus. Anyway, charging infrastructure and queues is enough to turn most off in rather a short time, it gets old fast but I stuck it out for 9 years. Most electric motor bikes even the best today can hardly manage 100 Kms or 60 odd miles riding normal. The bike in this video advertises around 144 kms or around 90 miles city riding so you could be talking 60-80 Kms out on the open road... The bikes are far too expensive for such major limitations add to that 1hr 30 mins "fast charge " I don't believe Battery cars are a viable alternative to ICE or battery bikes and probably never will. When you look at the environmental damage done through mining for lithium and all the fresh water and sulphuric acid needed + land it's not environmentally friendly at all. Then there is cobalt mining.......if course, the E.U calls anything that highlights the truths about electric cars " misinformation" If you like a dull and boring appliance like experience with limited range and slow charge times then EV is for you be it bike or car.

Your bike reviews are awesome very thorough and revealing. I think that was the fist video review of an electric I've seen. I agree, no clutch, a useless left foot would be so weird but as I kept watching I thought what a joy for inner city riding! Great Video! I like that the electric speedo's have that blurring issue same as their petrol relatives! One question, where are the headers and exhaust pipe? In all seriousness I hope we burn petrol for a bit longer....
@TheGorillaBiker
@TheGorillaBiker 5 лет назад
Well thank you kindly *tips hat*. It was weird but yes in traffic it was a dream. I'm telling you the perfect commuter! No heat off the "engine" either in traffic which was very nice. Haha that damn blur just getting everything! Me too. I'd miss the sound and thump so much! And the imperfectness of it all. The electric bike is far more clinical.
