I agree with you wholeheartedly. Its a shame. SU has no kind of hospitality to their guests. Everybody brags that SU has better music arrangement. Lets see if they can ARRANGE being a better host. Apparently, SU is not performing as expected. Listen to that noise being made when PV plays.

PV with a great song selection, balance and dynamics big improvement impressive Slight edge to SU for overall execution and volume. But PV is climbing for sure SU. These 2 are the cream of of the SWAC crop. But SU disrupting PV was not cool perhaps a sign of feeling intimidated. PV 💜💛

I’m from the H (Houston) Been playing trumpet for 22 years. Did not go to either school. With that being said, the reason why SU or even JState are usually always favored is because the directors are great at arranging songs to fit their band set up. The songs are catered to the STRENGTHS of the band and not just because they wanna hear a song. Which therefore allows SU and JState to crank songs louder and still be clean. Most other bands arrangements are most of the time bottom heavy and you can never hear all the parts or it exposes the weaknesses. For example, PV would be great if they knew NOT to arrange songs that needed stronger trumpet parts to be heard. And PV song selections are hella suspect. 5th quarter was embarrassing for PV. So in my opinion SU and JState will most of the time always have the edge because their arrangements fits the dynamic of their band. Hell, SU is not as “powerful” as they were in the past but they have evolved into a more complete sound with their arrangements, not just full out blowing. I could go on for days, it just kills me to always see biased comments that has nothing to do with actual musicality.

Great post. I'm new to the HBCU band tradition but as a jazz and big band aficionado I'd like to see them demonstrate a broader range of musicality. Arrangements are the key to that. We know they're strong but there should be a platform to show more than just volume. Maybe when they're inside battling they could show other skills.

cavaleer cavaleer I agree. I think SU have songs like that but they try to give what the ppl wanna hear. They don’t want to hear SU play like FAMU. the moment Southern show a different style, the world will be like “them boys fell off” just as some are doing now. If you watch older southern like from 2004-2010, it was all about blowing. Since Simmons started arranging the songs have become more “colorful” if you will. It just goes to show you can’t please everyone. Ppl are just stuck in biased opinions. Hell, Stillman college will even beat PV right now. They small, but their arrangements are better, you can hear each part and they have some power.

Javier Gutierrez dude you’re an idiot now I’m a PV alumn and Marching Stormalum/ BOX07 but even besides my bias musically PV is on this year. Southern will always be Southern and they do that well but they have Mellos that play outside of their range, Tubas that don’t understand proper tuba tonality and range and let’s not forget about the sloppy btones and let’s be honest the classic southern arrangements are a thing of the past. We need ensemble balance and quality overall but everybody know PV putting folks on notice since last season.
