Bea Johnson takes “reduce, reuse, and recycle” to an entirely new level. She brings her own bags and jars to the grocery store, making sure to only shop in what she calls the unprocessed perimeter of the store.
This lifestyle is really in alignment with what i always wanted: minimalism, simplicity, being close to nature. I really wish to do this when i have a home of my own. It's impossible to do this with my parents in the house.
Stephanie K I’m glad to hear that but I’m curious as to how that works whenever you buy food to go, what did they give you to eat it with? Or do you just have to learn to carry cutlery?
I'd love to live like this, but there is literally nowhere in my town that sells unpackaged groceries, except some fruit and veg. There's no bulk stores, everything is packaged in plastic.
Same here... I live in Canada, and fruit and vegetables that are fresh and local are available 3 months out of the year... The rest of the year they're imported in plastic bags and such. She also doesn't address how to freeze fruits and vegetables without plastic, or the availability of organic foods without packaging
well I guess you could just put your fruit and veg for freezing in glass or metal tupperware, glass jars or even just plastic tupperware (the nondisposable kind)
I've read you can freeze things in mason jars. Try Amazon for bulk, that way you are recycling less plastic, and there are several websites for DIY bread, pasta, cosmetics/skin care. I hope this helps there isn't any bulk stores near me either.
I would write a letter and call your local stores and ask for less plastic and bulk. If there is a demand they will create/remove the products. Also it may take looking into and researching stores to find out what they have and how to purchase more sustainably.
I stumbled on Bea’s book sometime in December 2018. I visited first zero waste bulk store in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Been transitioning to zero waste since then. Of course we have plastic remnants from before going zero waste because throwing them away would defeat the purpose. But as of March 2019, we don’t buy things in plastic including those that are recyclable. Among many reasons such as sustainable lifestyle etc, the most important factor for us to completely refuse plastic is that Malaysia is dealing with major stock-piles of plastic waste from the UK and other western countries after China refused them
Its so inspiring to see a low waister who is not VEGAN!!! Ive tried and ruined my health. Besides, nowadays there are so many companies who raise and treat animals right for us so consume. Thats a life a want for myself! thanks for the video
Tell that to the newborn calf that just lost its mother so his milk can go to you. Or tell that to the calf that has to stand bravely in the slaughter line so that you can live the life you want for yourself. Rock on with your bad self.
Amanda Martinez i thought i was the only one. I'm vegan though, but like to look at her video to inspire me to be more zero waste. If it weren't for my roommates, i'd be further along. So far I have the stone (deodorant), toothpowder, floss, reusable shopping bags and mason jars. Gotta try the diy makeup
Every country should do what the supermarkets in the UK do regarding produce stickers. There's weighing scale at every single till or self-checkout so you just select the produce type on the screen, put it on the weighing scale and put it on the scanned section. Ive been buying loose tomatoes, potatoes etc. for years without any bag, sticker or packaging.
Good ideas! I love how even their little dog is minimal, and matches the white house...LOL! Not everyone can make as little waste as they do, and it's going to look different for all of us (I don't care for her plain, sterile house), but all of us can figure ways to waste less, and thus spend less.
I love what you are doing in so many ways. Every day I find myself asking why is there so much packaging? It is creating so much trash and it's not necessary. We are destroying this planet and not considering the future. I have been inspired. And your home is stunning and looks so peaceful.
It was amazing when I seen teenagers come bouncing down the stairs, a true miracle to make that happen so easily, with kids. Its like an easy version of life before 1900s.
Write them an email saying how much you love and support their store because of x or y reason, but your visit would be more enjoyable if you could bring your own containers due to your lifestyle. Also, encourage others to do so. There’s power in the numbers.
Ok, I understand everyone on "going vegan can add to helping this planet" as well or even more. I am transitioning to veganism, and so I am still learning but I think everyone who keeps telling her that, should stop pushing that on her. I'm sure she's probably thought about it. Your health is important too and I get it that we can actually feel and look better ourselves going vegan but not every single human being can live healthily like that. Some people need meat because that's just how their body is. I don't know her personally, therefore I won't know her reasons, etc but it's her life and she's trying. So what I'm saying is for everyone to just appreciate everyone for the good things they're doing and continue to inspire each other.
no honey this is not how anybody body is, it's very unnatural and extremely unhealthy, we all been brain washed most of our lives, protein, calcium,,, blah, blah, blah, but now it has been proven most meats is carcinogenic and milk actually robs u from calcium, causing inflammation and bone destruction, I was there too, zombie on the auto pilot, but now I'm woke, woke af... lol
Un Identified humans are just animals. There are different diets for different species, not different diets among their members. It's not like some humans needed taurine or something like that.
So true! I was vegetarian and an on-and-off vegan for years and had to switch back to fish and seafood because of specific health condition. Also, the 'vegans' are so annoying and condescending I decided I don't want to be like them.
Hi Bea, From a huge fan in Denmark, I love your book. It has inspired me to start my own Impact startup. May I share your video on my website? Thanks in advance
apparently, in the US there will be an issue with sanitation if you bring your own food container to a store. Each container would need to be sanitized prior to filling, making it impossible in a supermarket environment, unless they have an expensive UV machine. We tried to implement this at a farmer's market where my friend works selling bread and dips, but her boss said it's impossible from a stand point of contamination - all containers are sterile before filling up, so the food doesn't get contaminated with potential bacteria (nobody knows how you clean your containers at home), and the sellers don't want to take this risk...
I think we should invest in research in order to find new biodegradable material, involving, for instance, biomolecules ("bio-plastic"). But since nothing of that exists in a consistent way, I think using this tips is a good idea. We must say It isn't always possible to conduct such a precise lifestyle, though. For instance, here, in Italy, you can't find every thing you need sold without plastic package or even without any package. There are some small stores (and you can't always find one near) in which packaging-free product are sold, but prices are quite high. However, we all can do something, even if it's not much.
Actually, for zero waste, you can buy fruits and vegetables with stickers. In most countries it is required to put edible stickers on produce. I just eat mine
Hi there,I just come up now as I was reading one of Portuguese lady who has this life style and she mentioned your book . So I right away Found you, I'm so interested to learn more about it and how do I bin rest of food?
ok another thing that I noticed on this video.. She was searching for the apples without stickers on them but she allows the counter people to put stickers on her jars? I'm confused.
I guess the stickers on the jars are something you cannot avoid since they're used for paying what you're buying. The ones on fruit, on the other hand, are not really necessary. I'm just assuming.
looks fantastic to me. no trash, clear organized space. I'd like to transition to this lifestyle. And for those of you who don't understand why Vegans are complaining that she's not vegan. meat, egg, dairy industries are the most destructive to the planet. so, if your goal is to help the environment, avoiding products made by these industries is a must.
OMG the vegans in this thread need to stop being so damn judgey. Her lifestyle is likely less harmful to the environment than yours. Nobody has to be perfect, it's a marathon not a short race.
I am getting tired of hearing all over the place about vegans and ‘their perfect’ diet/balance! Good for you all but stop harassing the rest of us that make other choices, we can respect yours its about time you did the same! We are different, and for a good reason. Vegan is NOT the only WAY, there are MANY :-)
Shinra For some people they need meat and dairy in their diet for health reasons. Like anemics need iron and can’t just eat beans all day long. Or they are lacking in some vitamins and minerals. It also may be hard with their lifestyle since they have school aged kids and both parents work, being a vegan can take way more food prep time. There are many reasons they may need to eat animal products. They are doing way more for the environment than the average family and show that you don’t have to do all or nothing.
Are the papers in which the weight of the products are written reused for each grocery shop? I have this problem - each time a buy anything, anywhere, they give me a paper with the receipt... In here, plus the papers with the weight. That makes a LOT of paper in a year.
We were shown a jar that contained their trash from that year. How were the chicken skins & bones and fish heads, skin and bones disposed of? I know they can decompose but I've often read, heard, been told that animal products shouldn't be put in outdoor compost.
Ellen Helms I’m asking the same questions? You can’t put dairy and animal products in the compost and here in Sydney we have bin for organic matter aka leftovers food but you can’t put your dairy products or meat in it.
Rebecca G I generally use witch hazel as a toner and it works really nicely. Depending on your local stores sometimes you can find witch hazel in glass bottles. Some online stores also sell glass bottled witch hazel. There are also a lot of sellers on Etsy that sell zero waste toners as well, and I love supporting their small businesses.
imagine being zero waste and vegan, that’s a very difficult life style to keep up and i’m sure none of you vegans hating on her in the comments are completely perfect either so shut up and let the woman eat a burger
I don't see why its harder to be zero waste and vegan than zero waste and not vegan? There are many, many vegan zero wasters and I personally find it easier not having to try to find a place that would let you put meat or dairy in your own container because of hygiene issues.
I can tell you, as a former meat eater and current vegan, that the vegan lifestyle is the easiest food lifestyle I've ever had when it comes to grocery shopping. You can get EVERYTHING you need in bulk, and much cheaper than any meat and animal products. Plus, going vegan is pretty much the single best thing you can do for the environment, by far. We're doing zero waste for the sake of the environment, after all.
I'm both............ and antinatalist, social deconstructionist, know 6 languages, have three passports, etc., so NO we will not shut up and let anyone eat a corpse. There's nothing more polluting than animal products are you KNOW that. Stop making excuses.
Not sure how to start! What do I use to remove my eye makeup! How about flossing and when you have a cold, you need something to blow your nose! Looks very hard.
You can remove your make up with oil (a lot of people use coconul oil bought from a glass jar). For tissues, Bea uses cloth ones that she washes afterwards
Wait I don’t understand didn’t the people put stickers on her jars cos I think that’s waste .no hate tho she’s doing something great and I support that 😆
It looks like: "My home is zero waste, but seem to be so clear and expensive". That' t a good idea but it'll be used to selling many exclusive "products". Again the same situation in our eco world.
If you want to be environmentally friendly, consider making your own plant milk at home. If almonds are too expensive, there are also recepies using other ingredients.
Oh God the comment section makes me think if turning into veganism results in reduction of brain cells. Seriously people, your attitude is compelling other to eat more meat. (No offense to the vegans with brain)
For all those saying that she's not truly an environmentalist cause she still eats some meat, maybe she knows B12 in truly absorbable ways comes from occasional meat consumption. To produce B12 vitamins and shots causes just as much waste as having meat a couple times a week. Yes, there are those vegans and not vegan, that have B12 deficiency. Maybe *she* has a B12 deficiency?? Do you know the symptoms of B12 deficiency? One symptom is mental instability. I've noticed more of this instability in vegans, than meat eaters. JS. Which by some of these "she's not a true environmentalist" cause she's not vegan, is a good example. Y'all might up your B12 intake. ;) Lol
B12 originally comes from soil. the meat you buy only has B12 in it, because the animals are injected with it. so it is still a supplement if consumed through meat. I do agree with you that some vegans can be harsh, though they are not the only ones to act that way. most of the time, when a vegan tries to talk calmly about the reasons for their choice, even if they were asked to do so, the answer will be something along the lines of "but bacon tastes great though". so it can be quite tough to not loose your temper in those cases (especially because for most of them, their choices involve a lot of emotional ) and i can't really blame the ones who then stop bothering about being nice when all they are not respected either way
I agree that she doesn't have to become vegan or vegetarian if she doesn't want to. But I have to take b12 supplements and some places sell them in glass jars so it's works pretty okay either way
The house is so cold and empty no history no memories no richness no comfort nothing to look at and make you smile its like they are staying at a short term rental it made me sad that they have given over there whole lives to this cult like obsession with zero waste moderation is always a better choice
everyone saying she should go vegan-- ok fair enough. BUT don't even TRY to say that it is a more ecofriendly lifestyle compared to being an omnivore because VEGANS who eat soy substitutes (ex. tofu) are purchasing and funding an agricultural monocrop which is destroying the ecosystem and clear-cutting rainforests to grow. If you want to be a vegan, go ahead, you're doing great for yourself and the environment. But if you're a vegan who eats soy that is produced in a monocrop (i.e., most soy), and you point fingers at meat-eaters, you are a hypocrite. (source: I'm a PhD student in environmental studies)
The majority of soy is grown to feed animals not humans. You need 15 pounds of soy to produce 1 pound of meat. That means 15 times more energy, water, land use etc. Vegans don't have to eat soy anyway, I know so many who don't because they don't like it, have allergjes or because of the environmental impact.
I keep watching videos about what is Zero Waste but it's so stressful and cringe worthy, everytime. So how about when you order stuff? Or when your shoes are messed up and should be replaced ? When your pen no longer works? When your jar breaks? Her book is a potential waste, it's paper, why not go strictly digital ? It's like a bunch of people patting themselves on the back. I'm all for reducing waste (in a minimalist way), but I'm not going "zero waste" anytime soon.
I'm not zero waste but am starting minimal waste at least. Ordering you can specify less packaging perhaps and recycle any plastic if needs be. Shoes you can buy second hand or choose new that are made sustainably and ethically. You can buy zero waste pens and broken glass you recycle (well you can in most places here in Europe anyway). I suppose she wanted the book to reach maximum audience and some people still love physical books. Like me :)
Hearing so much about Veganism make me want to eat a burger for lunch. I don't think that you guys understand how arrogant and smug you sound. It's lovely that you consider the environment in such a way but your delivery turns people off and by people, I mean me. This woman is amazing so give her credit for what she is doing.
Bionic Lohan it's not about the people. It's about the animals. If you're put off by vegans, okay. That's fair. I can't stand a lot of people too. But that shouldn't stop anyone from thinking about the main cause = safe animals. (and thus in return it sounds like you don't care about animals)
Honestly, humanely raised and butchered animals are much safer than those in the wild...they are guaranteed an abundance of proper food, an appropriate free-range environment, loving care including medical care when needed, no predators, and a quick humane death. No fear, no starvation, no suffering.
We are just educating and highlighting hypocrisy? Maybe you should try to move past your ego and selfish desires. I am zero waste and vegan among various other world-bettering attributes, i don't think Bea is that great, many do it better and with less.
@@judyg9889 99% of animals we eat are factory farmed animals and those Cows pigs and chickens are tortured, chickens are regularly starved in order to increase their egg production. Those 1% still end up in a slaughter house were their throats are slit and they drained alive. A lot of fear and suffering and starvation.
