Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/c...
After about 2 years or working and waiting, my FR-F1 has arrived from France - so it's time to get it zeroed! I am using the only commercial ammo available in the us; PPU 139gr FMJ (caliber 7.5x54mm). To properly show the accuracy this rifle is capable of, I will need to handload the ammo, and find a better shooter to use it.

That converted Norma 6.5x55 Mauser brass that's heading your way, will give you a good start for hand-loading some match-grade ammo. While I did not get too far into my load research, I did find that US M2 150 gr FMJ's seated at the cannelure give a very close match to the profile of the 139 gr FMJ from PPU, as well as the original French mil-surp ammo. Another MAS shooter told me that he had very good results using 155 gr. Palma Match bullets, although those required a modified 7.62x54R Lee Factory Crimp die to sufficiently grip the slug. I used the Lee 7.5x54 MAS loading dies, which are specifically designed with a tapered "button" for gently necking up 6.5 brass to 7.5. The other part of the conversion involved trimming the case length by 1 mm. This was accomplished by using parts from both the 7.62x54R and 6.5x55 Mauser, Lee Manual Case Trimmer. You need the casehead "chuck" from the 6.5x55 Mauser set, and the length-setting pin from the 7.62x54R set.

Hrmm. Passable first group, then adjusted up and right and got a super tight group, adjusted back down and left and the group exploded. I'd back it out down/left a click or three and then back up/right to where it was just to eliminate the possibility of some kind of tension/friction issue with the scope's internals.

@Fergesslich
@Fergesslich 5 лет назад
That is not a rule that can be universally applied, it totally depends on the gun in combination with the length of the shooters fingers. Also the shooting style is important, if you do self defense or rapid shooting you won't be able to get a consistent trigger press when trying to only use the tap of the finger (it also reduces accuray in the end if you are comparing similar times), if you are precision shooting you may have the time but some guns are badly designed, have a very long pull and therefore are awkward to shoot with the fingerpad only or maybe they simply don't fit to your hands to allow such technique. Telling new shooters to always use the fingerpad on the trigger is one of the worst advices I hear on shooting ranges...

@@bdkj3e I was, of course, referring to precision rifle shooting when group size matters as that was what Ian was trying to achieve. When we were allowed pistols and revolvers here in the UK then I too used whatever gave me most purchase when that technique was needed. These days I just shoot targets, deer and vermin with very accurate sporting rifles in hand made stocks and so my hard earned technique from my younger days now stands me in good stead.

Do you recall the supposed "14 gauge" caliber of the Winchester Liberator shotguns? I found what is potential proof of the 14-gauge cartridge. In an old "Cartridges of the World, 3rd edition," there is a picture showing various shotshell types. One particular shell is listed as "14 gauge, Winchester Alloy Cartridge." It is approximately the same length as a 2 1/2" shell, having a one-piece aluminum body, rim about double the standard shell rim thickness. It is listed elsewhere in this book as a "Western 14 gauge aluminum," and the pictures show a relatively large roll-crimp at the end, used to retain the shot. The case walls are very thin, and easily dented, case color is unfinished silver aluminum. Also listed in the book is the bore diameter. A 14-gauge standard bore diameter is .693 inch. 14-gauge is said to have been loaded with identical charges as a 16 gauge. The standard listed shell length goes up to 2 9/16," which aligns with the aluminum shell's length. I believe this solidly supports 14-gauge as the caliber for the liberator shotguns.

When you change ammunition this will happen. Different brands or even lot numbers. A rifle like this has to be zeroed and shot with the same lot number. There is also factors like Europe has a different climate zone than the high deserts of Arizona. Definitely training yourself to the rifle, trigger, sights, and using match grade ammunition you will be a killer shot. Very nice find and I wish I had one.

Predictable 'dropped once' comments about French. I'm not really a Francophile but often wondered why other 'stereotypes' ignored such as: Soviets issued one Moisen rifle to front edge soldiers, so when first soldier died for Stalin, second soldier grabbed recently deceased's rifle to carry on until he was killed then 3rd soldier, and so on., So… can we refer to an M91/30 rifle as having more dead Soviets soldiers connected to it than rounds fired? An how about WW1 Webleys in hands of officers and NCOs used to shoot British privates who refused to 'go over the top' to virtual certain death of German Maxims. So…can we refer to a Mk V Webley as having killed more British soldiers than any Mauser? Now let's not forget the Carcano, that's killed more US Presidents than any other rifle. Any other stereotype suggestions?

I suspect that you will be buying more of the PPU just to get reloadable cases. Perhaps with your next box you can sort the cartridges by weight. This has proven to significantly shrink the groups when shooting Russian steel - cased ammo. Barnaul 5.45 typically shoots about 3 moa out of my VEPR. That shrinks to 1.5 moa if I sort the ammo into 10mg different lots.

I dunno if this is fair or not, but Ian is using the joint of his trigger finger to pull the trigger rather than the pad. I was always taught never to do this, because it causes accuracy problems. On the other hand, I was also always taught to shoot pistol with two hands, but while I had calcific tendonitis in my left shoulder and _couldn't_ shoot two handed I got a lot of practice shooting one handed. At that time I was shooting as good one handed as I could two handed before the tendonitis. (After surgeries on both shoulders, I'm now back to shooting two-handed.) Practice makes perfect, I suppose. But I have to wonder if another person with different trigger finger style would still shoot where that scope is dialed.

@ForgottenWeapons Would you load the bi-pod the same way as if it were something like a Harris on a M40A3? I'm curious if loading it (pushing forward on it while the rifle is shouldered to make it steadier) the same way would cause some issues with accuracy simply due to bi-pod placement. Great video as always and keep up the amazing work.
