Zeynep Tufekci: How the Internet has made social change easy to organize, hard to win

Today the speed at which we spread information is so fast that a single email can launch a worldwide awareness campaign, as with the Occupy movement. Yet as techno-sociologist Zeynep Tufekci seeks to show, the ease of social media can actually hurt social change in the long run. From Gezi to the Arab Spring to Ukraine to Hong Kong, she shows how today's movements can miss out on the benefits of doing things the hard (and slow) way.

So the basic gist of this talk: the internet has made easier protest movements and thus made people more relaxed to make reform, and when things wear on a few weeks their attention spans run dry and they leave without having done anything significant.
@Cythil
@Cythil 9 лет назад
No that is not at all what she was about. What she talked about is that due you having to relay on a more close-knit organization in the past to organize there protest they also had more staying power. It is not about people being lazy or thing being to easy. It is that if you want to make lasting change you need to build a organization of some sort. You can not have a very lose collection of people that have just have some very abstract notion in common to organize change. Also note that she actually want to combined the strength of the old way to organize protest with the new way of technology. So she is not anti-IT.

Facts are decisions made. She is a good observer listing the facts that have to be recognised. Plus and minus.

Good discussion. Protests are thin in terms of action. They simply bring together a common voice, but actions speak louder than words. I remember the environmentalists back in the 70's protesting. Bu the ones who made a difference were the engineers and mechanics who design build and install better wind turbines to generate renewable power, or the solar panel engineers, manufacturers and installers, or the Architects and engineers who design energy efficient buildings, or the engineers and mechanics who design and build hybrid cars. Indeed, protests are like sugar. In small quantities its great, but in the long run it is just empty calories.

@mrubuntuking5257
@mrubuntuking5257 4 года назад
@@AlessandraLarios French revolutionists created a reign of terror with a new even more brutal bourgeoisie, which created a dictatorship that tried to conquer all of Europe, which led right back into a monarchy with as much inequality and food insecurity as before if not more that lasted, under different names, until 1870. Then France went republican at the same time movements for constitutional monarchy and electoral reform started building in Germany, Italy, and the UK. There's nothing special about France, and the 1799 revolution achieved basically nothing. The only difference is that when they protest for things the rest of Europe is doing around the same time the rest of Europe is doing them (they were actually 15 years late to Neoliberalism, and are only now giving up on it), their protest methods tend to be a lot more dramatic, so the political establishment falls more quickly and completely. James Callaghan or Mario Monti never had a 4% approval rating.

This TED Talk is amazing. Opens up a great discussion on our society. We need to "solidify" the "fluidity" brought by social media activism.

Social media did help us with actual news that people posted rather than believing just the news portal. However, there are still news that are from social media that are tend to be not true sometimes. The best thing is to compare all the sources we have got to actually figure out the accurate information if one news is suspected to be a scam.

Have you considered that the "slow way" might inherently lead to hierarchical organisation, as a result of the flow of information through the people involved - that would seem to be the key difference, but you neglected to consider it in your talk.
@thmstbst
@thmstbst 9 лет назад
good point, how do you think people should build hierarchies in the social media age?
@TheGuyWhoSkisWithPoi
@TheGuyWhoSkisWithPoi 9 лет назад
thmstbst Well, based on the examples in the talk, it seems like a pre-existing hierarchical organisation, such as a political party, backs a social media movement and when the fizz has fizzled, they are left in power... with a mandate. That would appear to be the way it IS done from my brief glimpse into the topic. As for how it SHOULD be done, there would appear to be no organic process through social media. Which leads to person to person communication and co-ordination - basically forming some sort of shadowy steering organisation.

I've heard of companies like Valve try to make the point that flat organizations can get more done by freeing up the workers time to do things. They also stress the importance of tangible goals. Something that can be measured

Zeynep Tufekci discusses the paradox of how social media and technology have made it easier to organize social movements but have weakened them in achieving their goals. She cites examples of successful digital activism in Turkey, Egypt, and the Occupy movement but highlights the Civil Rights Movement's sustained organizational efforts that cultivated important group dynamics, consensus-building, innovation, and persistence. Today's movements scale up quickly but lack the necessary organizational base to succeed over time. Tufekci emphasizes the need for innovation at every level and that platforms alone will not be enough to create social change.

Does she hear herself? it's all about the mentality of this generation and of instant gratification. you get millions of people to support a cause with no clear direction. it's the new fad to be a part of a movement. so the internet doesn't make it harder to succeed, I'm surprised this was on tedtv. this doesn't approach the problem or the solution, the same story 100 years ago "when people had to knock on doors before the telephone was invented." people have resources for their respective era, they were at no advantage or disadvantage in the 60s because of the available technology and neither are we, it's the people; it's the people who start these fires and don't fan it, they don't educate themselves and the people around them, they have to plans or goals to be communicated just "I don't agree with this ideology, if you don't agree also, meet me at the park with signs." these are mobile living petitions, not movements. don't blame the internet for societys lack of integrity.

Please look at a revolutionary political party in India called AAP (Aam Admi Party; English: Common Man Party) which is making waves in the country. It was a party that started as a common man uprising led by 'regular folks' fighting for stronger ombudsman legislations that got sick and tired of the system so went mainstream. Just last week the party won 67 out of 70 Delhi state legislative Assembly seats. Much of their movement too was organised through social media. This woman needs to do her research.

Of course this video was posted much earlier than 'last week' but still AAP has been a legitimate political movement for some time now.

YAWNS! Seriously, this script gets tedious. If you want change, you make change. If they oppress the change, that's a different story. Otherwise, changes are made for you. The problem is not how easy or hard it is to mobilize, but that we have no solutions. Notice: Social injustice? People: "Gather the masses!" *Gathering. . .* Politicians: "We acknowledge your existence. What would you like us to do?" People: Everyone looks dumfounded at each other for answers. . . "Fix it!" Politicians: *Face palms* "Right! Will do." *Time passes and changes are made. . .* People: "I hate politicians. They're so incompetent, even I could have done better." -_-'

Newey Oudone, you make it sound like democratic representatives have much more important work to be getting on with. Listening to their constituents is their job. They are paid to do it, and they do it full time (unlike you or I). That is how a representational democracy works. If enough people complain about something, their representatives take note. That is all they have to do. The way you describe it, it's like you called out a plumber to fix a leak in your house. He arrives and says, "ok what do want me to do about it", and you say "fix it". Well, if he face-palms you, then you should sack that plumber, because he is not doing his job. A representative’s job is to listen. And they do a lot of listening to lobbyists, day in day out, putting the point of view of big business interests. We should all learn from the lobbyists and do a lot more complaining, as they do. You complain, politicians fix - it's their job. You don't complain, they don't fix. It might not be the best system. One of direct democracy, direct action and worker ownership would be preferable. But it’s what we have, and that if how it is supposed to work. Of course, there is a big interest in keeping the public out of politics, making them feel small and insignificant, their views unimportant. That is the line you are peddling, along wih Fix News and the rest. Secondly, you suggest that there aren't any solutions. Well that is totally false. "End austerity" is a solution. "Regulate the banking sector" is a solution. "Introduce a decent minimum wage" is a solution. "Stop funding Israel's brutal war of aggression with taxpayers money" is a solution. "Stop fighting expensive illegal foreign wars of aggression and meddling in the Middle East to feed multi national business interests" is a solution. These are solutions to problems. All they need is to be implemented. Solutions are being offered everywhere by activists. You are just using the Fix News tactic of undermining the views of activists without offering any explanation why (because you don't have any).
