Argental Griller thanks for this smooth running transmission. I got one in my Jeep and i appreciate this transmission i like how it runs and after watching some of this in depth rebuild i am very pleased to see actuall gears and not belts on pullies definitely a keeper 🤠
I bought a new to me 2017 Pilot with the 9 speed and 90 percent of the time I get a smooth shift into the first dog gear 5. Other times I get all the famous hesitation, power loss, gear dump etc. Couldn’t it simply be a bad solenoid? Why would it work perfectly a vast majority of the time? I have this issue on slower acceleration usually and more acceleration does not cause a problem.
The engineers who design a transmission with all these parts are amazing. The people who can take it apart and put it back together are also amazing. I can see why they just replace them now.
Learned a lot from this video. Just started as a Transmission Mechanic 1 for ZF location in Illinois and am currently getting trained to fix these 9 speeds. Great video👍🏽👍🏽
You do one of the best jobs showing it all and making it simple explaining as you go along. I think your a wonderful mechanic to spend the time and setup as u have iv built many of my own transmissions most come out well last one was the old 48re in a Dodge ram deisel defanatly needs lots more cooling than the zf 9 does difference in vehicle size and weight being pulled but this is setup like an Allison impressive. I will be pulling one to build in 20k miles 2016 jeep remagade been a reliable vehicle period want to put a Cummins 2.8 diesel in front of it.
I taught myself how to rebuild my 96 Tahoe transmission. When I first her about this thing. I didn't want to look at it. Then I saw Weber show how it shift through the gears. I'm not afraid of it anymore.
Follow-on here; the 3-5-R steel used to compress the C Belleville spring needs to be the smaller of the two listed in references like WIT, which they show as 6 3/8 ID, P/N 45126B. The other suffixes are shown as 6 3/4" ID, and that's too big to fit in the inside diameter of the piston. Not all of us have shops with parts laying around. It cost me a few bucks and some time to find this out.
5 minutes in and this shows more information than what Honda ever gives us at the dealership. Comparing this to the new 10 speed, I hope the new 10 speed gives us a lot less headaches.
Thanks! The 10-speed is an impressive unit. One day I’ll go through that trans, because I have a few on the shelf. One of the next units I’m going to cover is the 6-speed because those are finding their way into the transmission shops.
Really would have liked to know how to fix the #1 problem with this transmission of "insufficient wire crimp in harness" that caused the recall and makes it shift into neutral while driving during this detailed and in-depth video. Probably would have thousands of views...
Excellent work! Really enjoyed watching this. I’m getting a code P0713 which is the temp sensor for the transmission fluid. Seems like that’s inside the valve body. Do you have the wiring diagram for the 22pin connector that is in the oil pan. I wanted to check resistance valve for the temp sensor before opening up the pan. 2016 Acura mdx 9sp ZF transmission. Much thanks!!!
Hello, thank you for the video. I have a question: I want to change the transmission oil in my 2020 Jeep Compass with a 9-speed ZF transmission. Do I need to install a new oil pan? Does the oil pan contain an oil filter, or can I simply clean the original oil pan thoroughly?
I have a 2018 Pacifica with one of these, and it's interesting to see how things work. I'd be interested to find out why so many of them have had very hard shift problems, like mine. If you slow down to low speed and then give it gas there will be a hard slam into gear. The dealer says it's a "software problem."
Im getting an intermittent P0979 for low voltage on shift solenoid C. I have seen some diagnostics to check wires for corrosion. I changed to fluid per honda manual. I can doubl check levels, but i dont think it is related. Any suggestions specific to this code? Any other resources? The video is great BTW. Very thorough.
Hello, thank you for the video. Regarding the ZF 9HP transmission, when changing the transmission oil, do I need to replace the oil pan as well? Is the oil filter located inside the oil pan? I've heard that the filter in the ZF 9HP transmission is deep within the transmission, making it so that you can only change the oil, and there's no oil pan with a filter. However, the official Jeep service is telling me that this transmission has a replaceable oil pan that includes a filter. I suspect they might be misleading me so they can charge me a non existent service.... Can anyone confirm this?
Great Video as always! When testing the solenoids are you applying 12 volts to the solenoids? By the way your solenoid testing tool with regulated shop air is awesome, i would like build one. Thank you for this great content. I love working on ZF's
Very detailed and informative video. Thank you very much for considering the camera angles for the viewers . I have been looking and asking for quite some time without being able to get any real information on the subject of modification . This transmission is rated for 350 lbs torque and I would like to know if it is at all possible to increase that number more into the neighborhood of 400 to 450 . If it can be done what else would have to be done for things to work properly ?
I’m sorry but I don’t have any suggestions for you. That trans is so software dependent that I’m sure having the ability to tune the software would be necessary. I don’t know of any aftermarket parts available either that might be stronger
@@siuautomotive HP tuner claims to have the ability to tune the transmission but Im not sure of how successfully. In your opinion do you think that it will handle 310 to 320 ft-pnds reliably without any real changes ?

Here in Brazil, these boxes are problematic, especially on Land Rovers. Here at the workshop I changed the oil in one and it subsequently developed a defect. I suspect it could already cause the defect and I just anticipated the problem. They stop moving, the customer starts/stops the car and it starts working again. I've seen Land Rover recalling this transmission even though the car is not under factory warranty.
Congratulations for the video, I have the same transmission as yours, it jerks from 4th to 5th gear when warmed up, can you give me a tip on this diagnosis?
Very interesting thanks a lot ! Like you've said in the comments section, the oil shouldn't be replaced as it is considered "lifetime". But does changing it would expend the lifetime of the transmission? If yes would it be better to flush it or you just drain/fill ? Thanks a lot in advance.
Thanks, Sean. Hey, could you do me a big solid here and let me know if that 3-5-R pressure plate from the 6L80 that you used to compress the C clutch return spring measures ID of 6 3/8 or 6 3/4? The part reference I'm seeing shows both. I'm a DIYer on a budget and I'll most likely have to buy the PP. Thanks
Hello. I want to buy a Jeep Cherokee 2014. Mileage 45,000 miles. Exactly the ZF 9-speed transmission. is this box a problem? What breaks most often and when? Thank you
i have a honda crv 2018 diesel engine with that transmission, how can i know or measure the right level when replacing the fluid? do you have a separate video for changing the fluid of the transmission? because i think the dealership put to much in mine and did not check the level of my transmission fluid. thanks in advance,,
bravo for this wonderful video where we understand everything. Do you have the reference of the hydraulic pressure sensor (in yellow 46:38)? Thank you very much. Cordially.
Out of interest what would happen if the retainer from the torque convertor clutch valve (51m 22s) no longer "retained" - would this potentially put the gearbox into limp mode and would reverse still work?
Professional video . lots of useful details . In my discovery sport the gearbox computer has broken. Has anyone tried to replace the ecu zf9hp48 code Q 01-T1 with Q 02-T1. And what do these codes mean?
Hi I have a ZF 9 speed transmission fitted to my Land Rover Discovery sport and am having issues when changing Up from 4 to 5 But only when cold ... when the engine reaches temperature the gear change is fine...... struggling to find any advise re way forward. had a software update that made no difference...... what's next? transmission oil change? rebuild? new gearbox/ any advise would be appreciated thanks in advance
I have a diesel renegade with this gearbox. When stopping at a traffic light do you recommend putting on N or keeping on D? In D the car gets a lot of vibration. Apparently it relieves transmission by placing the N.
The aftermarket is making kits. This link is from transtec, which most suppliers, like transtar1.com can get. transtec.com/products/?wpce_search=56918&post_type=product
Hi , thank you for posting this great tutorial , I’m am experiencing harsh shifting from 2nd to 3rd on my evoque it also appears to hold 2nd in higher RPM until upshifting , i am a technician so I’m looking to try and rectify the problem if possible , I have taken it to Land Rover and have checked for software updates and had the addaptives relearnt . I’m being told to change the oil next but there is a bit of confusion over the spec as the LR023288 is equivalent to lifeguard 8 , ZF appear to recommend Lifegaurd 9 . Any help or advice would be gratefully received.
I do know that dodge uses the same fluid for the 8 and 9 speeds. Regarding your hard shift, they have issues with the c clutch return spring snap ring popping out of its groove. That clutch is used in 2nd, 6th, and 8th. I wonder if it’s not allowing the c clutch to return as it’s released and cause a harsh shift? If you have two hours to burn, I have another video going through the theory.
@@siuautomotive thank you for your reply , I have watched you other video tutorial which is excellent and very in depth , it is very hard to find anything out about this transmission in the UK , is it possible that the fault could be caused by a sticking/ dirty proportional valve or as you have suggested more likely to be in a clutch pack , there are no errors in the TCU , what controls the blending between the gears ? so is this likely to be a problem with clutch C not disengaging or could it also be clutch B not engaging correctly . I would be grateful for any advice you can give me 🙏
A mechanic from the ZF representative in Poland said that ZF does not recommend ZF8 oil for the 9hp48 gearbox. Therefore, the Zf 9 was created to prevent gearbox failure. Apparently, the ZF8 was foaming.
thanks for letting me know. I think what happened is that I had a still picture in there and my video editing program didn't want to render the image when making the video. Unfortunately there's no way to update a video that's already been published (at least none that I know of). I did write an article on this transmission and I cover the pump info here: gearsmagazine.com/magazine/zf-9hp48-a-mechanical-marvel/
Hello! I bought an old Renegade 2015. Changed the transmission oil 1000 km ago mostly because of how old the oil was. Car runs fine than ever, but now I'm getting a leak on the outside of the transmission that I can't found where it's from. Do you have any suggestions?
The best fluid I've found to replace all trans fluids is the John Deere hi gaurd low viscosity hydraulic fluid it was designed for gear box applications such as this and is a much better fluid both for wear and clutch engagement remember jd uses friction and steels inside for not just clutches but brakes as well it is a much better fluid but I have never used it in a zf 9 I have in 48re Ford c and several others wonderful success but not tried in the zf9 yet.
All the ones I've seen have a metal tag, but I don't think it's the VIN. Just a serial and model number. I'll have to check though. Honda typically puts their vin on their transmissions, but I don't think it's on the ZF.
Hi, I’m in Ireland and I am looking at a Honda CRV 1.6. Twin turbo diesel and it had this gearbox, can you tell me if it’s a good or bad gearbox?... many thanks 🙏.
Well, Honda has had better luck with it than Jeep. The manufacturers are responsible for writing their own software for shift timing and shift quality. I know that Jeep has many software updates to improve the shift quality and Honda doesn’t have near the updates. That kind of tells me that Honda is better at figuring this transmission out. I will say that I think Honda is using this trans as a stepping stone until they get their own 10-speed perfected. My assumption is that in the future, most Honda’s and Acura’s will have the 10-speed or a cvt.
at 2:05 does anyone know which of the two holes to which the transmission cooler lines go to is the source or the return, the upper or the lower? Based on 17:11 the upper hole is the source, and lower the return. Just want to confirm
Does anyone on this blog know the parts from 2016-2020 ZF 948 are interchangeabe as a full set, thus can be swapped from one case, say a 2016, into a 2020 case?
I think as long as you swap among Jeep parts, you'll be okay. In talking with the ZF trainer, he says that all the Jeep cases and internals are built in the FCA/Stellantis plant in Indiana, whereas all the Honda and Land Rover cases and parts are built in the ZF plant in South Carolina. I've had them both apart and side by side, and other than valve body, they all fit together and appear the same dimension wise. You can tell, however, that the parts are casted differently.
@@siuautomotive I''m wondering if a 2.4l or a 2.0l engine transmission case excluding bellhousing is same as 3.2l, with the bellhousing serving to adapt the tranny to different engines. Also, if all 948TE have the same set of gear ratios and clutch packs, in other words a "universal" internal hard parts design, very good for manufacturing efficiency. I notice the 2.4l and 3.2l use the same valve body part number. Are different engines then managed by TCM so they can use the same tranny internals? What is your observation? Sorry if i seem to belabor the issue, but better to measure twice and cut once, as they say.
First thing I would have the dealer or a good shop to check to see if there are any software updates. They've improved the software quite a bit on these, especially on the earlier vehicles.
1st, visit the dealership to see if there's any software update. If you're outside of your warranty, this is going to be an out of pocket expense. Another thing we've discovered is a dirty throttle body can cause harsh upshifts due to a need to reduce torque when shifting into the overdrive gears (when looking at live data, anything more than 5-8nm force on the throttle motor is excessive)
Design-wise the 4-5 and 7-8 upshifts involve releasing a dog clutch and applying a friction clutch. The ideal shift is to overlap the apply and release timings to have a smooth transition. However with dog clutch release, if the timing is even slightly off there will be either a torque “bump” or a torque “hole” because of their on/off nature.
Hello~ My 2019 Civic Diesel 9AT just reached 20000 miles and the shifting is problematic to me. The issues are: 1. Shifting from 1st-2nd is usually hash & pushing hard even mild throttle 2. Very weird when the car shifts from 4th-5th gear, the car often "hard engine brake" when mild accelerating and everyone's head will dip. But this will not happen if accelerating rapidly. I am going to bring it back to Honda for further checking but I am afraid they will say "unable to replicate the issue". so worrying
except the above issue the shifting up & down through 1st-9th gears is OK especially when accelerating rapidly, it's smooth. But when it comes to low speed + stop & go city area, it's really painful. 4th-5th gear is driving me crazy. And Thank you very much for the video. Very informative.
I have the exact same car and same transmission. For me it shifts hard when going from 4th to 5th when going slow. If you drive at 42 kmph, it is the worst manifestation and you hear a loud click or hit. It started around 30k km. It was under warranty and they replaced the oil, battery (!!). It did not help, as the issue remained. They told me it is normal shifting for this transmission ZF9 Regarding replicating issue, this is what i found: 1) gear box has to be warm, so drive for approx 20-30mins 2) slowly speed up from 30kmph to 50kmph and at 42kmph the jerky shift will occur 3) engine rpm will be around 1700 when it happens let me know how you sorted it out. In one other video, they replaced the pressure sensor: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MM40QLo5E5M.html&ab_channel=TimLampe
