Yeah, this show really crossed the line a lot with its humor. Gir: "Puppies!" Zim: "No, Gir! You can eat later!"

"I had head pigeons once... maybe it was lice" Sir, that is a WHOLE other episode, let me tell you...

Cut the best part of the school nurse's line: "Such a healthy child. And so full of organs!"

fun fact: this is pretty much the ONLY time Zim's threatening. Sometimes he's shown to be A threat and fairly competent, but this is the only time Zim's given a chance to be SCARY.

I'm surprised Doug hasn't seen this show before, it's right up his alley.

Just remembered that Gir isn't in this episode, Gir will either make or break the show for Doug.

Who else has been waiting for the day that the Nostalgia Critic talks about Invader Zim?

Given the incompetence of the nurse and the entire school, They probably wouldn't have even noticed that Zim has no organs.

"Dark harvest" wasnt the reason the show was cancelled Its because its use of 3d animation on some episodes causes it to be the most expensive show nickelodeon has ever produced, And due to "low ratings" nick decides its not worth it and decides to cancelled it

"are the other episodes like this?" Yeah pretty much.

"If you leave school grounds, it will explode" - Ms. Bitters referring to the hall pass she gives to Zim.

6:08 What makes this scene even darker is that he replaced that kids liver with a hall pass. Y’know, the one that Ms. Bitters said would explode if it left school grounds? You can piece together what happens when the kid eventually leaves the school.

10:31 No one gonna talk about this glorious gem of a dialogue? "I suppose you've got a heart in there." "Six of them." "Intestines?" "Large and small." "Spleen?" "In three different colors."

When a cartoon character steals organs you know you are in some dark toon territory for sure.

This isn't what got the show cancelled. What got the show cancelled was that they accidentally spent an entire season's budget on 3D walnuts for a single gag.

I love gaz, her dry humor is great. I love the EP where she stalks the hell outta of a kid who stole her game console.

"I'm kinda surprised they got away with that, especially on Nickelodeon." Early 2000's Nickelodeon was a lawless place.

This show really shouldn't have been cancelled :(

this episode traumatized me as a child. I remember being scare shitless for days. I remember being too scared to eat. I think we went out to eat the day I had watched it and I remember sitting there thinking Zim was going to come down from the ceiling and steal my organs. That memory too made it so difficult to click on this video.... I haven't seen this episode again since I first watched it as a kid.

Dude like half of all of invader zim is super dark. I'd recommend watching the show it's really funny and the dark episodes don't hold back.

Invader zim feels like an adult swim animated show scaled back quite a bit.

*Fun Fact:* Gaz, Dibb's sister, is voiced by Melissa Fahn who played Ed from _Cowboy Bebop_ .

One more Invader Zim episode I can think of that went rather dark for a kid's cartoon: "Bad, Bad Rubber Piggy".

Doug I can tell you personally that Invader Zim is perfect for anyone who loves dark toons.

that episode of ed, edd, n eddy where Ed wears a monster costume and goes on a rampage kidnapping the other cul de sac kids and the rest of the Edd try to stop him. Thats a personal favorite of mine

You didn't mention how Zim had Head Pigeons for nearly the entire episode and how the pigeons coo acted as a means to let Dib know that Zim was close. Funny how the whole Head Pigeons thing was more than just a means to get Zim out of class. XD

There's something oddly charming about seeing Doug talk about stuff he actually likes. I also never really appreciated how well stuff was shot in IZ before

I just love how the nurse's office has signs for specific ailments that include cold, flu, head wounds, radiation burns and wedgie burns XD

There’s an episode of The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy that still haunts me to this day, Little Rock of Horrors. It’s about a meteor that consumes brains and I just remember all these people being lined up to have their brains consumed, all the while a musical number is going on. Scarred me as a kid and this series has made me remember it. Please if anyone else remembers this episode, signal boost this for Doug to see and review!! It’s a creepy episode

I would recommend “The Day the Ed Stood Still” from Ed, Edd & Eddy, where Ed is acting like he’s a monster in a horror film.

Out of all the dark toons you've covered so far, this is one of the few I saw when it first aired, and you really did a great job analyzing it. Also thanks for pointing out the 'goth comics' movement that happened back in the 90's. What with the move more towards webcomics now urging people to read digitally rather than any older physical media, that stuff was already a small, niche movement back then, so it's mostly forgotten nowadays.

I remember being a little kid seeing this episode at my grandma's house. I wasn't freaked out, per se, though I remember being pretty disturbed by the boy with the heater. I thought he ate that thing.

This episode scared the shit out of me as a kid. And I loved it.

I do like that the dark humor is covered in this, and not just the disturbing stuff that this episode (and in retrospect, for the whole series) is famous for.

You're not alone: I've literally watched the whole series for the first time during quarantine (years after my friend kept telling me I'd love it............and he's right; it's AWESOME!!!!!!)

I really love how Invader Zim worked as a show. It was clever, dark, and had the needed humor. It's up there in the top 10 shows I enjoyed growing up. Ren and Stimpy and Rocko's Modern Life are also in this list. I enjoyed Invader Zim over Spongebob.

"I had head pigeons once...or maybe it was lice" Oddly, there actually was a Zim episode *with* lice. The first (pilot) episode of "Invader Zim" is f*ckin brilliant. Twenty-two minutes, and it introduces all the main characters and their basic identities, clearly defines the set-up for the rest of the series, gives us backstory that will actually be *referenced* a dozen or so episodes down the line...and does it all while not sacrificing any humor.

Zim had a lot of strange moments.

"Everyone seems to be recommending this episode of Invader Zim to me for this series. I've never watched the show before, so I'm going to give this a wa- and now I have the first season for my personal pleasure."

I've been waiting YEARS to hear you talk about this show (I'm the one who drew the NC crew in the ZIM style for the DVD cover contest a few years back, plus the NC and Santa Christ Christmas drawing you have hanging on your studio wall in the same style)! And now that you've seen one episode, you absolutely *have* to check out the Invader ZIM X-mas special--just think more of this demented stye and humor, only... Christmasier. I know you'll love it. The Halloween special is a great one too; it has the best production design out of any other episode imo.

A pretty dark cartoon I watched as a kid was the episode where spongebob and Mr Krabs tried to bury a dead body

The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack had several dark episodes. One I remember is the one where they head West and got lost at sea.

"That bunny was from another one of the creator's comics." Me: "Huh. That's a cool easter egg---ohhhhhh."

Speaking of this Zim character, his voice actor also has a role in the recent indipendent cartoon "Helluva Boss". Ever heard of it? If not, you HAVE to give it a watch, it's absolutely worth it!

he doesnt mention that Zim put a bomb in a kid thats gonna go off as soon as he leaves school.... thats pretty messed up

Fun fact: this is the first invader zim episode I watched when I was a kid also.

Everyone says this was one of the Darkest episodes, but I think "Game Slave 2" was pretty dark, if not moreso than this one. Imagine literally referencing The Ring, in a children's show. I hope Doug watches more of this show, I think he would love it.

Zim may be a bad guy and Dib may be a good guy (morally) but Zim is our protagonist and Dib is our antagonist

Doug should do the TeenTitans episode “Fear Itself” plenty dark and awesome animation in that one.

Invader Zim was so well designed and written. It's a tragedy it got canceled before finishing the story they wanted to tell.

"the most horrible xmas ever" is another episode that became quite notorious thanks to berzerk robo-symbiote-suit santa and his jolly boots of doom, and the tentacles and the whole killing a giant space monster santa claus thing didn't sit well with some parents at the time who insisted it had terrified their kids and scarred em for life. its nowhere near as well remembered as dark harvest or some other episodes since it was made right before cancellation and was not run often. nickelodeon was constantly battling with em to change the show despite its popularity so jhonen and the staff kept sneaking protest jokes into the episodes. (like Nick, the kid who lives in a tank in zim's lab constantly getting experimented on. zim had rewired his brain to be painfully happy and cheerful all the time, and the kid has a shirt with the nickelodeon logo on it, he was a very unsubtle recurring jab at them.)

If you enjoyed this episode of Invader Zim, you should definitely see the entire series + movie. It would not take you long as it was unfortunately, short lived-but it is RIGHT up your alley for sure. And kept with this dark tone and humor all throughout.

I would love to see you do a Dark Toons video about the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy episode "Son of Nergal", whcih I find to be the darkest episode of that show.

I love the episode GIR Goes Crazy and Stuff, where Zim swaps a security guard's brain for a squid's (absurd, since cephalopods don't have a central nervous system) and, at the end, Zim and GIR watch the guard swim off into the ocean as GIR cheerfully says, "awww, he's being eaten by a shark..." as Zim stares in horror and disgust.

I'd love to see him talk about the SpongeBob episode Nasty Patty.

If you're looking for more creepy cartoon episodes to review, might I recommend "Jack and the Haunted House" from Samurai Jack? That episode terrified me as a kid. So much so that everytime it aired on TV, I wouldn't even watch it.

Doug, PLEASE do more invader zim! words cannot express just how much i adore this show. And even if you dont do more, just watch it for yourself, theres not much (1 season and a few episodes into the second , which are some of the best imo). Ive been watching it since it first aired here in australia on Nickelodeon (early 2000s), and to this day, it is still my single favorite piece of western animated media.

I love Invader Zim for every reason Doug mentioned. The colors, shadows, and angles all give off a very grim atmosphere, and I love it

Zim is famously voiced by the amazing Richard S. Horvitz. He also voiced Billy in The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, Kaos in Skylanders, Alpha 5 in Power Rangers, Grey Matter in Ben 10, Zoni in Ratchet & Clank, Daggett in The Angry Beavers and Moxxie in Helluva Boss.

Believe it or not, but the people who worked on the show wanted to take even darker approaches but Nickelodeon shot the ideas down many times.

The weird thing about these episodes, he never mentions the audio. A lot of people, I know, pointed out that he never mentioned the song that played through the whole episode. And in this one he focuses on the angles and the shot comp, but never mentions the sharp noises and harsh music they played in the episode.

Why everyone takes Dark Harvest and Not Keith who literally died after Zim removed his eyes with robotic ones and they exploded when he fell from the roof? The Halloween episode? Or the wormhole with the fucking moose? XD 😂 Dark Harvest is scary but not the most scary one

This was ironically my favorite episode. I remember having it recorded on my lil Tivo box and I would just flick it on as my background show while drawing.......freaking best show, hands down.

It’s sad how Invader Zim was forgotten by Nickelodeon until Netflix brought it back.
