Zimbabwe's Lithium Industry & Economic Opportunity Explained

According to GlobalData a research firm, #Zimbabwe was the world’s sixth-largest producer of #lithium in 2023, with output up by 428% in 2022. Yep 400%. Now over the last five years ending in 2022, lithium production from Zimbabwe decreased by 9.18% due to political and economic challenges but with the economy opening up after sanctions from the US were lifted, lithium mining is just one of the industries that is expected to rise in the country, estimates saying this could be by as much as 31% between 2023 and 2027. The Zimbabwean gov is looking to get the lithium industry up to $10bn per year but analysts say the president & gov are a little ambitious…
But I want us to look at this opportunity as see where it could take the country.
Zimbabwe accounts for approximately 3% of global lithium production, with the largest producers being #Australia, #Chile, #China and #Argentina.
With there being increased efforts to address the global #climate emergency this has leading to an increased demand for renewable energy technology, particularly in the #GlobalNorth, which has meant an increased need for electric vehicles and the batteries required to power them. Africa and in particular Zimbabwe is one of the new frontiers in a race for #batterymetals, and lithium - which is sometimes referred to as ‘white gold’ -now one of the most sought-after commodities in the world.
Given how tight lithium supply chains are globally, lithium exports could potentially help Zimbabwe escape its status as a pariah state, largely isolated by Western politicians and investors. But a big scramble is under way for the country’s critical minerals and at the moment China is winning it and many countries around the world don’t like that. This could and likely will mean more political challenges for the country but with so much at stake, a way forward is needed and must be found in order for Zimbabwe’s economy to grow. Zimbabwe must be made great again.
What are your thoughts ? Can Zimbabwe take advantage of this new opportunity ?

DRC discovering more minerals only means more problems for them , (un)fortunately. Zimbabwe needs proper leadership , nothing will change for them with ZANU-PF. Great content Zim, keep going.

"Zimbabwe must be made great again..." It surely will, and so will Afrika as a whole. Thank you very much for this objective and educational video about Zim's mining sector. Do you guys not agree to have a single trading bloc as SADC or Afrika whereby we sell our minerals as one or pull resources together to build our own factories for value addition?

So much potential to grow export pipelines. I hope those downstream are paying attention, LOOKING AT TRANSNET specifically. They can revive the railway lines between our countries and facilitate export through our ports. Bypass the road networks, reduce trucks on the road and have localised trade areas where the trucks can do last leg delivery. Transport and public enterprises should be salivating at the prospect. Love your work dude

Not mentioning that the Zimbabwean economy is basically operating under a Mafia State is key piece of context missed here. Anyway Zimbabwe is more likely to hand its lithium to Russia or China & the govt officials will loot the money. Zanu Pf looting makes ANC look like amateurs

Totally agree with you. My belief is that the issue of due disclosures is dealing a low blow to the Zim economy The economy should improve if it gets intertwined with that of SA, where charges around movement of minerals can be reduced in order to take advantage of global pricing. There’s a lot to do in Zim, Moz, Lesotho and Botswana, which will benefit the region

Having minerals without producing the final product is point less on building the economy remember u will still import that shit at a high price than you export the minerals

Canada and Australia have economies built on exporting raw materials, it’s not impossible especially for developing countries. The problem is the allocation of resources.
@sulaak
@sulaak Месяц назад
@@wayneshamba6961 Canada and Australia can also extract and exploit those minerals and don't need a foreign investor.
@wayneshamba6961
@wayneshamba6961 Месяц назад
@@sulaak they do process raw materials but that only encompasses a small proportion of their GDP. If you look at the GDP charts you’ll notice that Canada depends heavily on the USA buying its raw materials and it’s the same with Australia and China because of the volumes of raw materials they sell in comparison to what they process. Also with the high costs of living and high wages they cannot attract enough foreign investment to diversify their economies as much as they’d like. The economics simply don’t allow for exploitation. Why hasn’t Apple or Microsoft opened up factories there? The skills and raw materials are plentiful but the costs are too high.
