Beckenbauer caused a lot of refocusing on how defenders should play and Maldini fully accelerated things. With Maldini, defenders became modern in the mid 90s, I don't think theres much difference between a defender from 1998 and one from today, and any change would be easily adaptable from the '98 defender. Another good example of a modern defender from the past is Rio Ferdinand.
As you can see in Zidane's first season with Juventus Lippi would implement him in a more central midfielder role at times. This game also highlights Zidane's long range passing.
