Film shows Zinnia's first experience with a framed up vintage towline glider on 8.23.23 in Wawayanda, NY. My 8-1/2 year old granddaughter used a 10:1 winch, flying the 30" Thermic Trooper glider that was made for her by some guy named 'Pop Pop'. Her joy says it all as she chases after a good tow. Process of the build is included. Filmed with a Canon PowerShot SX20, and iPhones 11Pro & 14Pro. Music: "Horizon" by Ben Winwood via ArtList..
Plan is available on OuterZone: outerzone.co.uk/plan_details....

Probably the most beautiful video you have ever made. I smiled and teared up a little watching her chase the model. Reminded me of being a kid and of my kids that are now grown. Thank you.

Love your smiling faces in the cockpit at 1:29. I built at least one Jetco Thermic Trooper kit around age 9 or so ~1966. From 1960~1964 we lived next door to the banker for Comet Models in Chicago. He'd occasionally bring home a kit or two for me. Wonderful times. Every time I go hang gliding today I relive the dream of my 7-year old self some 58 years later. Fly-on!!

Truly a blessing in so many ways. Thank you for your art, flying, beautiful accompanying music, and all your exquisite aircraft renditions. Myself I was blessed with a dad who introduced me at 10 years old, in 1971. Built an Aeronica Champ, installed a 0.20 PeeWee from my own earnings. Dad built a rubber powered Guillows Lancer but I decided I needed something with more power! I built and flew for several years and many crashes, which I became famous for. Then I discovered 32rpm records!

Funny thing the Thermic Trooper. I still have my father's that he made when he was a boy. I'm 52 years old and my father has been dead for years, but the plane still flies when my grand kids get it out of the closet. Happy days came to us all just because of something that came out of one of Frank Zaic's beautiful red and white boxes. Long live Jasco and Jetco planes and the happiness that comes from building art that flies. Thank you again for the video and the memories.

Bravo Zinnia! What a perfect flight! I have built many Jetco models back in the late 50's, early 60's. My first was the Thermic 18 which went OOS on my fifth hand launch, after a trim session, but I persevered and built my second from the plans and some sheet. Been hooked ever since. Thank you for bringing back so many childhood memories 🙏

Cool beans, Thanks for the links. It used to be easy to walk in to a store and by a balsa kit, but that was 60 years ago. Gosh, you can't even buy a rubber powered stick plane without needing to use the internet, where they were once even sold in drug stores. Glad icecream is still easy to find.....

I specifically remember the corner of my local hobby shop, where all of the Jetco & Scientific kits were stacked on the shelves...I'd walk down the aisles with a quicker step each time my dad drove us there, about a mile or two from our house. Later it was on bicycles with my friends, about the same time that rockets became more of a distraction. Yeah, I miss it.

Even something as simple as a thermic trooper you make into a piece of artwork. Beautiful. Enjoying it with your granddaughter is even better. I built most of the the kits on the back of that box including the trooper when I was a kid. They were great kits for kids to get the hang of building and understand aerodynamics.

Thx, John. I couldn't agree more. I have a vivid memory of my dad with a red & black Thermic 18 or 20, tossing it sideways but in a perfect circle, catching it every time, as we tried to chase and catch up. I tossed it too of course, which led to numerous dorks & breaks on the tail boom...my first experience with under engineering.

@@maxfliart I remember when I was kid in California must have been around 1962, I was maybe 4. My dad had this red Berkeley Rearwin Speedster. Beautiful plane, still has it. He had a Holland Hornet in it. He would let it ROG and it would go up very fast and then gracefully glided once the engine quit. I have memories of running underneath it chasing it. Dad instilled my love of airplanes into me. I built models, none flew well until I was an adult and figured it. I didn't get back into rubber powered until I was in my early 40s. I find it so therapeutic to put them together. I love the Easy Built Kits, so much left to the imagination with the old designs. Fun to figure it all out. Golden Age Reproductions Kits also. I must say your videos have taught me a lot, thank you. They are also incredibly well done. My modeling got me into full scale when I was 18. I have basically flown almost every week since 1977. I bought my own plane in 1993, a 1955 Bonanza, love it. Modeling led me to flying, that motivated me to be an engineer, my flying associations led me to my first and only full time job which I have been at 38 years with the same company. Modeling was such a gift and for that I am grateful to my dad for introducing me and encouraging me to do it. It is touching to see you doing the same with your granddaughter, you never know where it will take her.

Well it's very clear to me that you are going to have to watch out Tom. I mean, if Zinnia's getting this on the winch tow line with a crew of 4, 1st pop out of the box, laurels are going to have to be looked at. That's all I can say. You DO know that I speak to you as a little aeromodeling friend, don't you? The next generation is coming on, there's nothing we can do to stop it, so I guess we just have to go with the flow.. ❤️⭐👍

nice information next time, Notice and Eliminate the design mistakes made by the manufacturer. :51 the use of an angle at the mid-span of a main wing is less-than ideal. as discussed, there is excess mass in the stabs. in the case of a (floaty) glider, the span of the horiz-stab can be equal to as-little as twenty-five percent of the wing span. the leading edge of the vert-stab should be at a slope of 75 degrees. the root chords of the stabs Should be equal in length. a main wing Should have a load-bearing main spar, located at Thirty percent of chord. there is a shortage of twist-resisting structure in the tail boom. btw, the best configuration of a tow hook is to have a sharp ninety-degree bend at its 'bottom'. this configuration results in consistently normal releases, at the point when the tow line is slack. cheers
