I recently upgraded my internet from Comcast to Ziply (Formerly Frontier formerly Verizon FIOS) Gigabit internet with no data cap. The video shows a unscientific example of what speeds you can expect if you use a Wifi 6 router.
Here is the router i bought from Costco:

I used to work for an internet company, do to covid I lost that job, but customers like you really grind my gears. Do not blame the service provider for those speeds, the tp link is showing the speed they provide to you and that's where their fault ends. All your low speeds are do to your devices having hardware not capable of speeds greater then what you see there.

Right. In real world people could save a few dollars and get the 100mb/s plan since the difference won’t be 10x slower.

The test from the TP-Link app is the most accurate test of your Ziply connection. Everything after that is influenced by the limitations of the hardware or even the WiFi band the TP-Link assigned the device too. Mesh is good for coverage but bad for network speed. But too your point, is it worth paying for 1G if you won't see it on most devices in your house. For most people the answer is no. I've also noticed most websites will only serve at 100-300Mbps.

these tests were done over wifi you cannot expect to get gigabit over Non Wifi 6E network and then most companies market at 1000 but actually top off around 900-to 950 ish

I love how you talked to the cat about wifi and tgey were just like"bruh"

Wifi will get only < 30% of the max speed. Plug-in master router will get you full speed close to 1G but will never over that. Secondary router will get you < 30% because they connect to master router via Wifi. 1G is the ideal max speed for the master router.

Yup, if you want to get the full bandwidth, wire up your home. Cat 5e and above will get you gigabit speeds.

And you’re competing with other wifi signals around your home. I get close and sometime above 1Gbs via Ethernet with CAT5E on my new router. My netgear wifi5 router didn’t come close even through the same CAT5E cables. I figure that the cpu in the netgear couldn’t handle multiple devices.

@@vmooreg best cat8 now as we are seeing 2-5gbps being normal

Oof, you did this on wifi? To even reach 5gbps speeds, you need at least a cat8 ethernet cable directly connected to the pc or device. Even then, you would need to make sure your ethernet port supports speeds greater than 5gbps.

This wasn't done right on so many levels. First you need to make sure your LAN speed (wired and/or wireless) is up to spec. Use iperf3 or similar tools to make sure your wired computer can achieve 900+ Mbps speed on LAN transfer. Otherwise your computer is not properly setup/configured or is not capable of running at 1Gbps, then what's the point of testing WAN speed on it? Same for WiFi connected devices. Bandwidth settings and many other factors affect outcome. Lastly, this TP-Link WiFi 6 mesh router is probably too cheap to provide stable performance for a 1Gbps WAN throughput. If you really need stable GbE internet, get better hardware (Pro-sumer level), connect devices using wired ethernet whenever possible, then it will worth the money paid for 1Gbps.

Just proving that most people can't take advantage of gig speed without lots of effort, so probably best to save some money each month with a lesser plan.

Great sharing! Do you rent Ziply router or you just use your tp-link router?
@rieskame
@rieskame 3 года назад
Thanks! No extra modem or router is needed for gig internet from Ziply. Ethernet runs directly from wall into mesh router which is different from when I had a Frontier FIOS modem/router years ago.

Maybe it splits the gigabit BETWEEN the devices?

The hardware and software have to match what you throw at it. I've learned that the hard (but more fun) way.

Did they actually install fiber or copper? Ziply came to us and tried to get us to switch. The tech informed us that it was going to be copper as they hadn’t gotten the fiber setup yet. Now they have the fiber actually set up and seeing my Brother in laws fiber speed test, it’s fast.

Verizon then Frontier FIOS was already to the house so they didn't need to do anything except at the wall. It's fast enough but not T1 or 5G fast. Good luck with your install

The Wi-Fi speed. It also depends where you live.

I recently moved out of the state so I don't have gig up and down speed. I've got Spectrum gig down speed and have seen 450mb on my phone using these routers which is still pretty impressive.

Never thumbs downed a video before or commented. But wow!! You use that garbage mesh and expect good results? Are you kidding me! Go get yourself a wifi 6e netgear nighthawk, the top of the line one and try again. You will get 800-900 on 5ghz and 1.2 on 6ghz band.
@PatrickJoseph007

That Nighthawk will NOT service your whole house (unless you live in Tiny House).
