Thanks for that feature! This puzzle is a remake of one of my very first zipper puzzles and the idea (of this and the older version) was to put more focus on geometry. Thanks to all the testers and to the people recommending it. Fantastic solve as always!

An elegant logic dance. A "zipper dance." 👏👏👏👏👏 (Long ago, Qodec created an iconic *Renban dance,* now included in volume 2 of CTC Greatest Hits). By the way, Simon missed some steps of this *Viennese waltz* and jumped ahead... For instance, @9:21 he missed that *8* must be in the central columns of both box *4* and *5,* which in turn locks *7, 8* and *9* into the central column of *box 4...* _"This is not quite working is it?"_ (Simon @9:21) Actually, if you can dance *slowly,* it is❗️

Simon ruling 9 out of the centre circle in box 8 by going through a longish process by looking at the effects on the other zipper lines rather than using the pencil marked 9s in box 2 is such a Simon thing to do.

33:05 I love that the "simpler way to see that" wasn't just "there aren't four different digits that are smaller than 4," which is clearly _too_ simple for unsimple Simon
@MrXantrias

I rather thought of: in a box there is only one way to make 4, which is 1+3 and you can't repeat it. =)

CTC is my sleep aid of choice and mental health booster. The puzzles are engaging enough to stop intrusive and racing thoughts. I need to focus and concentrate to follow Simon and Marks mental gymnastics. The way you deliver the logic is kind amd sweet and predictable and safe (meant in the best way possible). People often confuse peacefulness as being boring. When your mind is constantly in chaos you appreciate peace. I catch up on what I missed the next day, especially when I need to calm down and focus my thoughts. Thank you Simon and Mark.

13:30 ... the contortions that Simon goes through to avoid sullying himself by looking at the pencil marks in box 2 are quite something 😎 Lovely puzzle, once you get into the right mindset of asking where the 9s go and where the middle cells go in other boxes - and as long as you don't forget to use zipper logic to disambiguate pairs later on! - it's a nice straightforward solve, took me 13¼ minutes.

a small miss scan at 16:40. "you cant put 6 on a line that adds to 6", but the total of the line is 7 not 6. We can't put 6 in r3c1 for a different reason: the opposite digit on the zipper is at least 3 (because of the 12 pair in the column), so r3c1 is at most 4
@PassionPopsicle
@PassionPopsicle 25 дней назад
Phew, my mind can rest now, I was fretting - I'm glad there is a valid logic deduction, even if Simon didn't spot it
@chris5619
@chris5619 25 дней назад
Also, even if we didn't have the 12 pair pencil-marked, r3c1 couldn't also be a 6 because cells r1c5 and r3c5 would have to be the same digit.

I love the logic threads Simon goes thru to come up with the orange 8. I think his brain completely denies the existence of sudoku until absolutely necessary. The first thing he did was pencil mark the 9s in the same column as the orange 8-9. It is ceaselessly fascinating to me especially since I can usually follow the logic but wouldn’t know where to start it myself. but the easy stuff he skips over pops right out at me 😂 Or as he says much later after another bout of mental gymnastics, “There could have been a simpler way.”

@mstmar
@mstmar 25 дней назад
im always surprised how much math simon uses on the zipper lines when much simpler math would work. e.g. at 10:00, simon finds the minimum sum of the 6 cells on the zipper to be 16 and thus concludes the total must be at least 16/3. but more simply, there are 5 digits on the line, so one digit on the line is at least 5. add in it's opposite digit (at least a 1) and you get a 6+ total. the same thing happens at 19:40. here simon concludes that the sum is at least 10, so the total is at least 10/2, but again, there's at least a 4 on the line, so the total is at least 5
@UnaturalShadows
@UnaturalShadows 25 дней назад
arent those the same thing
@mstmar
@mstmar 25 дней назад
@@UnaturalShadows they end up with the same answer (this time) but are quite different methods. simon takes the minimum sum of all the digits on the line then divides by then number of pairs on the zipper while my way just looks at the biggest number that is on the line and adding 1. so at 10:00 simon goes (1+2+3+4+5+1)/3=5.333 and so concludes the total is at least 6.my way says there's at least a 5 on the line so the total is at least 5+1=6
@UnaturalShadows

@@mstmar hmm ur def right that thats an easier way to do it... i guess i think of math almost entirely focused on the result cuz im programmer brained
@nicmasterdude
@nicmasterdude 24 дня назад
@@mstmar I think Simon's method is a much more pure math oriented logic, where your method is a very applied math method. It takes him a lot more time to verbalize his thoughts due to the perceived complexity of his route to the same answer, but I imagine it happens inside his mind in about the same time as your method would. Both are obviously valid. I find it fascinating how much diversity there is in the way our brains process information. Simon's method seemed obvious to me, where I had to think about your method for a moment to make it make sense!

At 16:49 it is indeed true that you can't put 6 on a line that adds up to 6, but that isn't relevant here because the line adds up to 7. The reason you can't put a 6 in R3C1 is because it would place a 1 in R1C5 but there already is a 1 in that column, as part of a 1/2 pair that could have been resolved a while back.

Not sure if it's just the trustworthy constant in life that I currently need; or if its because the content is soothing but just in case anyone else is struggling, I hope you find solace in this comment and know you're not alone. I've been focusing on conversations that haven't even happened (nor maybe will) for the past 90 minutes and feel better knowing I can focus on something else and hopefully sends me sleep (in a good way!)

Braid has some platforming elements, though the mechanics of the game make most of them somewhat trivial - if you've beaten any Mario level in your life, you will likely be fine. I've heard many good things about a new game called Lorelai and the Laser Eyes. Other good candidates in terms of popular puzzle games would be Stephen's Sausage Roll, Antichamber, FEZ and Talos Principle II (there are adjustments in the game that can be made to prevent motion sickness for the last one). In terms of games that would fit your channel and that you should still stream even with lighter or no puzzle elements, would be things like I Am Dead, Untitled Goose Game and The Stanley Parable (would be a delight to see the two of you react to this game).
@cjbailey3646
@cjbailey3646 25 дней назад
Came to say about the same thing about Braid, re: platforming. I think I remember Simon mentioning Overwatch a long time ago, and while it's not the same sort of game, I think he's got the gaming chops for Braid.

16:48 Simon gets LUCKY because he rules out 6 out of R3C1, because he thought the zipper line adds to 6 in R4C3, but the core is actually in R4C4. Luckily, putting 6 in R3C1 would need a 1 in R1C4, which cannot be placed due to 12 pair in column 4.

Around min 17, simon makes an inconsequential mistake. He says 6 can’t be on a zipper with 6 in the center, but the center was a 7. Fortunately, it didn’t matter because the 6 would have been removed because it’s pair, 1, couldn’t go on the other end as box 2 already had a 1. But a fantastic puzzle and solve nonetheless!

38:42 I mean, come on Simon. If R8C7 is a 4 or a 5. And you need a total of 7 or 8 for the zipper. That means R7C8 cannot possibly be a 1. AND, you have a double X-Wing on 4's and 5's in boxes 7 and 9. Or as you like to call it, a deadly pattern. Either way, R7C5 is a 5 and R7C6 is a 4. R7C3 is a 3 by zipper logic. Therefore, R7C8 is a 2 by Sudoku. And by zipper logic, R8C7 is a 5, zipper sum is 7. 1 and 6 goes in on the zipper... Puzzle solves itself basically.

Error @ 16:43 Sorry Simon :( At this point you ask if a 6 can go in R3C1 and answer no as a 6 can't go in a cell that adds up to 6. However this Zipper adds to 7, and so a 6 could have gone there. Luckily, the 6 couldn't go there for another reason, and that being that there is a 12 pair in column 5.
