** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
After some astonishing sudokus in recent days, Simon's brain is rendered palindrome-blind by this gorgeous puzzle from CaptZebraCakes. It's a simple idea: 10-lines and palindromes but the logic feels remarkable fresh (and not easy to this solver at least!).
Play the puzzle at the link below:
sudokupad.app/4fxnvktjvn
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Digits along a grey palindrome line must read the same forwards and backwards. Each orange 10-line consists of contiguous groups of cells, each of which sums to 10. These groups of cells cannot overlap; every cell is part of exactly one group. Digits may repeat on a 10-line. Cells separated by a white dot contain consecutive digits. Not all dots are given.

Thank you Simon and the CTC team for featuring this puzzle! To settle the debate, I chose 10:01 AM simply because I like mornings better than evenings. 10:01 PM is past my bedtime.

32:44 The way I noticed that r3c7 and r4c7 should add up to 10 is by thinking about them combined with the domino above it and the 235 triple at the bottom. 7 cells are a minimum of 28. So r3c7 and r4c7 are at least 8. But the other two cells on the line can't add to 2, and there's no way to leave one cell alone

I love how Simon around 51:00 starts going "I am close to solving this". I went about a slightly different route; using sudoku on the top-right palindrome in combination with sudoku to figure out where 235-blocks can go. When Simon put the pen-ultimate right domino on the long ten-line that went in the middle in and filled it with either 19- or 46-pairs, he says "I have this feeling it wants to be a 19-pair." While at that point I'd already found the 9 that put an end to that option. Overal took me far more time than Simon to solve, though. Lovely puzzle.

101:54 for me this time. It was absolutely brain bending, but I got through it completely on my own, including finding my mistaken assumption that led to me believing I had incorrectly sized groups in box 1 when I was actually on the right track the whole time, aside from missing one possibility for one digit. I’m really proud of myself for being able to power through this one, and once again I am in awe of the minds of people who can set these complex beasts of puzzles. Well I felt like a right numpty after that ... 35 minutes down, and I had 77 cells filled in, and a 4-6 deadly pattern in cols 1 and 2 (which I had seen coming, but decided to press on anyway). I guessed one orientation, and it worked! Tick ☑. I tried the other way, just to see. Nope, doesn't like it. I stared at the grid for a full minute and a half before I realised what I had missed 🙄 But now I've seen the video length, I'm thinking I might not be _that_ much of a numpty after all!

Finished in 52:27. Had to restart to see if I was doing something wrong in box 5, but I realized that I had to have a pair in the bottom part of the 10-line since a 4 set in the box doesn't work and the 3 doesn't work with the middle square. Fun puzzle!

At 41:11 ... ignoring the uniqueness explanation... you can rule 9 out of r7c8 because the remaining 4-6 pair in box 9 will break r5c9... so there is a 9 in column 8 in box 6 which can't go in r4c8 because it's on the palindrome and will clash with the 9 in row 3... so r6c8 is a 9

At 55:55, Simon determined the 10-pair in box 5 was 46. I bet I was not the only one immediately begging him to do sudoku on column 6, which included another 46, and a 469 that could be resolved to 9. And, this 9 would resolve the white dot in box 9, opening up everything! But, he just wouldn't. :)

Yes, I saw that too and how it would roll on to the white dot in box 9 and begin disambiguating colours. It’s natural for us less gifted solvers to see what effect our recently added digits have on their row, column and box. Not so Simon, though! Oh no, he goes galloping off in an entirely unexpected (to me) direction.
@Raven-Creations
@Raven-Creations 7 месяцев назад
Whilst I was solving, I thought "Simon's going to struggle with this". There was so much sudoku, with cells being much more restricted than was obvious, giving doubles, triples, and quads everywhere. For instance, @ 54:02, R3C8 is restricted to being 235, which makes R2C5=R3C8=purple 235, which gives a 235 triple in C5. Similarly, R4C8 is restricted to 2359, but it can't be 9 because its mirror sees a 9. Therefore R4C8 is also 235 and must be yellow, because its mirror is R3C4 which sees the other two colours. The cells in C8 in box 3 can only be 1235, which gives a 1235 quad at the top of the column, and makes R6C8 469, but since there's already a 46 pair in the box, it's 9. The other empty cells in the box are 235, which means 2 cannot go on the white dot in box 4. The 3 in the corner celebration said "deet deet doot" in the version linked, not the usual party popper.

Funny, I saw box 7 and immediately was like "this has to be the break in", then saw box 9 and figured it had to be a clue... Then spent the rest of the first half hour making calculations first in my head and then in an excel sheet trying to figure out what the hell was the clue supposed to be. Didn't keep the time noted but I'm sure it was well over an hour so you beat me anyway but I just find it funny we had mirrored issues starting in.

I wanted to put 'x' between the dominoes that add up to 10, which the pen tool actually can kind of do when they are orthogonally connected, but not when they are diagonally connected. But then I don't remember seeing such a clue anywhere else either. The V's and X's of any previous puzzle I've seen were always orthogonally connected. So even if the author of the solving tool would allow us to add our own V's and X'es between cells, it would not have helped here. So don't consider this a feature request just yet. I wonder if anyone else wished they could do something similar...

"Famous last words" is a bit ironic when commentating a solve. If it turns out that you're nowhere near done, those words will be very much not last. One secret to ten lines is that you can draw green one cell along them from each end and each section break, because you can't have a one-cell sequence. That's useful because you sometimes see that you've drawn a three-cell line next to a two-cell line and combining them is impossible, where it's not obvious from the one middle connection.
@RichSmith77

Occasionally two cell lines can join to three cell lines, if the line allows repeated digits.

And if he had used the 46 pair in column 6, he would have got the 9 in r8c6, then the 6 in r8c9, the 7 on that white dot, which basically finishes the puzzle by solving all of the 78 and 23 pairs. But Simon found the long way.

Arg. So much yelling. Particularly missing the 46 pair in c6. Of course when I attempted the solve I never got near the things Simon missed. A great solve if somewhat frustrating.

My yelling is at 50:40, there is a white did next to the cell just filled in, and it is in a two cell 10 cage... so many digits that are impossible. And it would surely help to notice that 2 is not consecutive with 4 or 6. 59:46 (nine minutes later)

@@57thorns I try really hard to be understanding. He simply doesn't scan much when he's teasing out a logical path. (and I get that. Doesn't want to lose the train of thought) I understand that in these videos I have essentially outsourced the logic and am focused on the scanning. But it's hard when you see something you know is powerful.

If it was 10:01 PM, it would be 22:01, which is not a palindrome .....

I watched this multiple times and I STILL don't get why he put the divider there at 28:26.

6 cells can only add to 21 or higher, if he made the top 10 segment longer it would be too low and break the puzzle

How large is the adding-to-ten group that r1c7 is part of? Obviously bigger than one cell, because it can't contain a 10. Can it be 3 or more cells in size? Well, that would mean that the top three cells of column 7 add up to no more than 10. But he's already shown that the bottom three cells of column 7 are part of a single group, and therefore add up to no more than 10. So if r1c7's group were three or larger, then you'd have six cells in column 7 that add up to no more than 20. But six different sudoku digits must add to at least 21, so r1c7's group is not three cells or larger.

It throws me every time Simon describes as purple what I can only see as pink. Nothing wrong with that, just weird is all.

Simon your videos have gone from 20 mins to 1 hour .,.. can you please 🙏 stop wasting our time with “the secret” every video. The length of video is not the issue … I watched your recent 2 hour video, just please don’t waste our time for no good reason.
