Zippo Hand Warmer Review and Temperature checks

I put the Zippo hand warmer to the test and also compare it against throw-away hand warmers and the hot-rox rechargeable USB hand warmer. It is completely flameless.
This hand warmer was supplied free of charge by Zippo. They did not review, edit or approve this video before it was uploaded.
This model of the Zippo hand warmer provides warmth for up to 12 hours. I was skeptical that it would last that long considering my experience with disposable hand warmers but it did in fact last the full 12 hours.
It's much cheaper to use than the disposable ones since lighter fluid is pretty cheap, especially when bought in bulk. It also gets hotter and lasts longer. The only downside is that you do have to load it up with lighter fluid each morning. If you have steady hands, you can do the whole thing in a matter of minutes.
Some of the reviewers on Amazon have said the hand warmer got too hot to handle. I'm guessing they didn't read the instructions because it advises you to keep the hand warmer inside the pouch since that regulates the amount of air that reaches the catalytic burner unit and in-turn regulates the temperature. I tested leaving it outside of the pouch and it did get much hotter.

Great review and thank you! I have 8 of these Zippos...fabulous. Keep them tightly closed in the bag..better still diss the black velvet bag and use a nice thick cut off sock with the heel cut out..and it will burn warmer...and much longer..mine runs 20 hours on a 12 hour fill consistently and feels warmer with the sock. Keep it in the bag or sealed sock...the bag or sock should be closed at the top with a clip or stitching. It will not go out. Peacock handwarmer bags are better than zippo as they have velcro to seal the top. An open exposed top or even a small opening at the top of the bag, will cause it to lose heat, and will supply it with more air which consume the fuel much faster. Get one for Granny too, she'll will definately love you for it if she suffers from cold hands!

I got one to today and I love it. I took the temperature once it had fully warmed up and I was getting around 46 degrees C in the pouch and over 70 out. It certainly gets too hot to hold without the pouch but I think the temperature depends on how much air gets to the unit.

Great review, I love mine and it works a treat….. a note about the chemical sachet type hand warmers, they have lasted about 8 hours when I’ve used them before (sometimes a ‘jigging about’ of the granules helps) and are ideal for preparing a pair of gloves or wellingtons before wear and also keeping near your photography equipment to stop fogging when removal from your bag etc, my extreme cold weather gloves have a pouch on the back to hold small chemical type warmers on the back of the hand which the Zippo would be too large for……….everything has its place I guess, good review tho, keep it up and stay toasty 😊

I got a chemical burn from a Zippo lighter in my pocket and that pretty much turned me off them. I just bought two of the hand warmers to put in my mitts at work. Hopefully it doesn't do the same but I doubt it would unless the liquid fuel somehow spilled out. I bought two usb ones too but the idea of heated 18650 batteries makes me a little nervous. I used the battery ones this morning while I removed a crashed police car from on top of a wire guard rail for a frigging hour in -35°C before the wind chill. Worked great but the Zippo ones were in my mailbox this evening :)

Just like their windproof lighters - They basically sell the things near to what it costs them to make. They make all of their money off of the fluid sales (and for lighters also the flints - and for the also the catalytic burners.). - That's why they bought out the Ronson company - because Ronson/Ronsonol fluid and flints were a little cheaper and people were buying that instead. So now the Ronson branded stuff is the same as Zippo because they reformulated the fluid to match (basically why bother having 2 different formulas.). Although the Zippo fluid is in the fancier metal can where as the Ronsonl comes in a bright yellow plastic bottle. So same stuff, Ronson is still a little cheaper, so that's what I buy except when I buy stuff as presents for people. I don't how well their lifetime gurantees work outside of the US - but it's great here. I sent my now 16 year old lighter to them for repairs 3 times now. - 2 times because the cam spring broke on the insert (the piece that makes the classic click sound and holds the lid closed, after so many uses it can break off) and once because I dropped it on the ground hinge got bent and it wouldn't close properly. It always came back with a new insert hinge realigned and tightened and in a new box with the old broken insert - I'm guessing they give the broken part back because a lot of Zippo lighters have a lot of sentimental value to people - my step father in-law doesn't smoke but still loves his lighter from his friend that passed a while ago.

irishharp2m6 zippo does recommend either using ronsonol or zippo brand fluid in their products...they have for quite a while so it's not like they were trying to trick people or anything

+Francois Deshue Maybe because the Chinese clones are made in China and the Zippo lighters are Made in the USA? Did you even think about your comment before writing it?
@SergeantExtreme
@SergeantExtreme 6 лет назад
+Francois Deshue I work for a company called Rockwell Automation, and let me be the first to inform you that you are an idiot. First of all, while you are correct in saying that the manufacturing process has been largely automated, the production floor employees aren't the only employees at the company. You've still got the HR Department, the Legal Department, the Accounting Department, the Sales Department, the Marketing Department, and the Engineering Department. All of these add up, and the salaries of these employees in the United States are significantly larger than their Chinese counterparts. Second of all, the manufacturing in China is cheaper altogether. Not only are the employees paid 5 cents a day, but there's no injury insurance for the company to buy, no OSHA to make sure that the workplace is safe, no Labor Boards to regulate hours worked or conditions on the production floor, and no employee benefits such as 401K. Add that to the fact that the raw materials (such as the brass and steel) are government subsidized by the Chinese government in order to artificially make the raw materials cheaper, and you can start to see why the Chinese rip offs are only $2 compared to Zippo's more expensive price. So, is there anything else you would like me to mansplain to you?

This seems to be a rather silly string of comments. Why do people make different colored/style socks or underwear despite them being usually covered? Why do bed sheets come in different colors and styles even though they are only seen for a brief moment when making/climbing into a bed or washing them? Why are the covers of books printed with different patterns and colors when most have a dust jacket that is virtually never removed? Obviously there will be times when the warmer is not in the bag and people enjoy having crap that looks fancy, shiny, pretty, and different. They make different color hand warmers because they have a basic understanding of human nature? That may just be it ; )

A problem also is that you can't keep it upright in a sleeping bag so some fuel can leak in to the burner and beyond if it's full of it. Solution: Don't fill that much, but how do you know when it's in use already before sleeping and you go to add some fuel for the night? May be good to put it upside down for a while to drain any excess fuel before igniting.
@norwester1523
@norwester1523 3 года назад
@@Heikki_Finland , it shouldn't leak upside down because of the cotton batting soaks it up inside. Zippo lighters don't leak, same reason. They will leak if overfilled. Just like a cotton towel will drip if too wet. And keep it upright for a couple minutes after filling, to allow the cotton batting to soak it all up. "Capillary action is your friend."

I have 8 of these Zippos and a peacock handwarmer as well. This (wick Burner) should last about 70 to 100 full 12 hours burns. My zippo once broke in and kept in closed bag, gives 20 hours of heat on a 12 hour fill...repeatedly. I prefer using a cut off cotton sock to place the warmer in...the black velvet is nice...but the thick warm cotton sock...keeps it MUCH warmer, and running longer.

I have lit my zippo in the past three years over 200 times, filing it each time with one full filler. It is still running. When you light it, make sure you touch the BLUE FLAME to the wick, not the yellow part of the fire..in smaller blue part of the flame nearest where the flame exits the lighter. This blue flame is the hottest, while the yellow flame is cooler and produces much more soot on the wick. Do not over fill the warmer. never letit get the wich wet, or the wick will deteroiate. Fill it with fluied, turn it upside down then, to make sure nothing drips out before you replace the burner wick back on. ...wait a few minutes, then light it...with the blue flame it wll take approximately 8 to ten seconds of contact to light it, and your good to go. this will prolong the whick extensively, as in my case for over 200 lights. Mine is lit and in my pocket this minute. I fill and light it EVERY day sept thru march..every day. It runs about 18 to 20 hours non stop. I even sleep with it under the blankets. It is a life saver for me. I have raynauds disease in my hands..which makes my hads cold 24 hours a day. The Zippo for me, had made life worth living again.

It's a mix. Sometimes I buy it while abroad, sometimes I ask friends or family to bring it and sometimes I use services like Johnny Air to have it delivered directly to the Philippines. Fee Gee Menelaus Garcia I did think about doing a review like that before, but I don't think I'd bother unless it was a sponsored video or they provided a discount for my viewers, cos it's gonna be quite a boring video to make and to watch.

True, haha. I was planning on buying a PortaPow Premium usb multimeter and a usb load tester that you use on some of your videos. I don't think they sell those here, so I'll just have to wait for someone to go here from the states.

You can extinguish it by placing it in its pouch, and putting it in a zip lock bag, to suffocate it

to turn off the zippo, take your pocket knife and on either end of the burner is a slat and all you do is pop it off. You let it cool in a safe spot. Once cooled you can just put it in the vented lid and put the lid back on. Thats how you turn off your zippo hand warmer ...
@chrisprice5835

Or just use the pouch like a pot holder to grab ahold of the burner to pull off

A catalytic converter is a part to a car
@GadgetAddict
@GadgetAddict 7 лет назад
Indeed, I meant to say catalytic burner :)
@CaptApril123
@CaptApril123 5 лет назад
You could still use catalytic converter, which is simply something that holds a 'catalyst'. In an automobile it converts co to co2 & water, chimney scrubbers essentially do the same thing. In the handwarmer it's converting lighter vapour to heat. I use these for winter cycling, great little things.
@merrickbrody8859
@merrickbrody8859 5 лет назад
@@CaptApril123 Not only is it releasing heat, but the lighter fluid (being a hydrocarbon) is being converted into primarily carbon dioxide and water vapor.
@merrickbrody8859
@merrickbrody8859 5 лет назад
Zippo calls it a catalytic "burner" but that is actually a bit of a misnomer because there is no flame, and hence no "burning" in a chemical sense. Catalytic "converter" is indeed a more accurate name because there is catalytic combustion occurring inside of the hand warmer (converting hydrocarbons into carbon dioxide + water vapor) but technically no "burning" is taking place.

@@GadgetAddict first thing I did, it just doesn’t work. The metal should be knurled for a snug fit, or somehow clip into place. The thing seems like a good idea but no doubt about it, the execution and build quality is junk. Another big name American brand having their shite made in China, yet still charging us top dollar for the privilege. I would not recommend it.

This is how a Zippo functions....Zippo hand warmers do not run on lighter fluid..in fact lighter fluid should NEVER touch the catalytic burner ot it will be ruined. ..but instead run on the "fumes of the lighter fluid" as it evaporates up from below and into the little burner head. As the fumes fill the catalytic burner material, a grey fuzzy stuff coated with a very light coating of platinum found it the head that pops off when filling.....the burner begins to glow like an ember when a match is put to it. Touch the blue part of the flame to the wick..not the yellow part of the flame. ..ithe burner will looks orange, almost like the tip of a cigar in a dark room and will then continue to glow with heat, as it consumes the fumes which constantly rise up from the bottom fuel holder below it. When all the fuel has evaporated, often 12 to 20 hours..the burner simply goes out. Your cars converter has heat from the engine flow over tiny platinum balls found in your cars catalytic converter under the car near the tail pipe. .this burns off engine odors. The hand warmer operates the very same way.

@totallyfrozen 6 лет назад
LOL! Of course you don’t have to remove the catalytic burner with your fingers. The small pliers in your Swiss Army knife (you DO have a Swiss Army knife don’t you?) can pinch it. Also, you can tap the unit upside down firmly and knock the burner off in to the lid.
@Heikki_Finland
@Heikki_Finland 5 лет назад
Or insulate the fingers and quickly use them. It takes a second or two to remove the burner.

I used the disposable chemical hand warmers and about an hour later I got a terrible metallic taste in my mouth because the warmer is filled with iron oxide and I was absorbing it through the skin while holding it in my hands. I threw the hand warmers away and will never use them again. What a terrible product. Use the Zippo or electric heaters instead because they work better and are much safer.

+Aliman I think one improvement Zippo could make is to enlarge the plastic filling container. Every time I spilt the lighter fluid, it was in the same way. I'd fill it up with lighter fluid and when I pick it up, it would slosh from the front to the back, throwing it off balance and all the liquid would spill out of the hole where I just squirted the fuel in. Making the container larger would likely prevent these spills.

Why do people make stupid comments like this? Why do people make different colored/style socks or underwear despite them being usually covered? Why do bed sheets come in different colors and styles even though they are only seen for a brief moment when making/climbing into a bed or when washing them? Why are hardcover books printed with different patterns and colors when most have a dust jacket that is virtually never removed? The list goes on and on. Obviously there will be times when the warmer is not in the bag and people enjoy having crap that looks fancy, shiny, pretty, and different. They make different color hand warmers because they have a basic understanding of human nature? That may just be it ; )

+tan hock jun yeah that would be awesome! There are small TEG/peltier modules about size of a zippo hand warmer that can get icy cold but they use a lot of electricity (relatively) and have a lot of heat byproduct that you need to dispose of. I guess it's easier to create heat than cold.
