I build from scratch. Make all plastic parts etc... Buy my balsa in timbers and mill it, but.......your work IS GORGEOUS. Proud to have a fellow woodworker in this universe. Excellent work. Your machine work is a site to behold.
The cowls, spinners are made from molds I made from plugs. The canopy iis vacuumed formed. Hope too upload a new video soon on that process. Subscribe and hit that heart and share. Thanks you
Wish I had a CNC for all the modifications I made for mine. I had a hellova time making my gear doors open and close with my retractable gear. I managed to apply 10 live missiles ( modified/painted pop bottle rockets). My mistake was not taking into account that the rockets couldn't get away from the plane fast enough or would come back to the plane. I had one strike the wing midflight just outside the left nacelle and did not completely take off the tip of the wing. It made one smooth barrel roll and with an epic THUD, smacked the ground. About eighty hours of work altogether but one awesome ending! Your model is incredibly sturdy and detailed. Wished I could have added some of the features yours has. Beautiful work. Took me back to memories of mine. Thanks for sharing!
I own some of the original XP-38 photographs taken during the buildup of the original aircraft taken just before the war. Incredible detail and extremely rare. You did an incredible job and I love the router you built. Fantastic
It's so fantastic to see a fellow builder in this age of ARF era we find ourselves in.building and drawing is a dying art.my father taught me from the age of 7 how to build.it started with Chuck gliders and then into full scale aircraft.I design and build my own aircraft.I draw them then build them.my father has now passed away but I will always cherish the knowledge he gave me.also at the age of 5 my father had me flying gliders.up until I was 13 my dad took me flying every weekend.I cherish those times now he is gone.I have just had the motivation to pick up a transmitter again.I am now back flying my planes and I am designing faster and faster aircraft electric and nitro.I hope more people would stop doing the one click hobby king special and build something for yourself.it doesn't have to be as complicated as what u see here.for example, I'm designing a very simple profile 3D fun fly I can take to the park and have some fun.it's not difficult to build it just takes a bit of effort and time.keep up the great work the P-38 looks great
Was going to build this plane as the P-38 is my fav. WW2 fighter, but after building 3 40" ones and finding out how hard they are to fly I decided to build some other twin engine planes first. Then 15 yrs later and over 30 planes later I decided to redesign the plane because the original just does not fly very good without the counter-rotating engines. This I designed a look alike P-38 using 2 25cc gas engines out of weedeaters. Made many changes so that the plane would be a good everyday flyer. You can see the plane in my pic. That was her just 6 months ago after her 4th new set of engines. This plane has over 200 hours on her and still going strong. She's had only one misfortune in over 6 yrs of flying and that was me coming in short with my 3D stunt plane and landing on top of her . The damage was minimal and was fixed very easily. As this is the first time seeing your build I'm looking forward to seeing how she come out and how she flies. Look forward to a lot of questions about your plane from me. @@@MikeJM-Fly-RC Thanks for the return on my reply and I've watch all of your vids now and thanks. Great looking plane so how many flights do you have on her now? Good luck with your new build.
@@leebenson4874 around 30, If your ever in the area I'll be at WATTS in Owatona Mn, then Northern Military Alliance fly-in, in Owatonna, then off to Fond du lac WISCONSIN for the military and classics over the Midwest, Akeny Iowa after that.
An absolutely beautiful bird ! "A biased favorite" I must admit ! Great work, and craftsmanship ! Enjoyed the video, and looking forward to your next installment !
That is an amazing build with super craftsmanship. Sadly not many people have the talent and patience for such work. When I was little, the the P-40 was my favorite prop driven warbird. Then in my late teens I discovered the P-38 after reading a paperback where pilots were given new 38's to replace their worn-out 40's and the American ace went up and dueled with the Japanese ace in his Zero. I can't remember the name of the book but I really liked it and it changed my new favorite prop driven fighter to the legendary P-38 Lightning! After a little research I found the book, it's called The Last Dogfight by Martin Caiden. If you read it I hope you enjoy as much as I did.
I don't have the skill to assemble a simple wood kit much less design a CNC machine to cut the parts from the plans I made. Quite a feat of workmanship.Looking forward to the rest of the videos.
That's one lucky "pilot"! :) So sweet , this build! those flaps, landing gear and doors, etc. are so slick too! Gonna follow this build with enthusiasm! Thanks for posting it!
Thanks, it's been an adventure. I don't think I would ever have gotten it done if I wasn't retired. I can't even imagine how many hours I have into it.
I'm working on detailing the cockpit and riveting. I will be painting all the control surfaces soon and then I will add another video. I hope to do a preliminary cg check soon. Need to build a Vanessa rig first.
I believe the designer was Nick Ziroli , an old friend of my uncle (Charlie Jensen). He used to go on and on about Nick and his designs. Anyway, really nice work on this. Your cnc worked great.
Hard to imagine that electric motors can provide enough power to make this P-38 airborne... ah, the advantages of technology. Had a friend a long time ago in Avalon on Catalina Island, Gregor Milne, used to fly P-38s when he was in the service. He told me these babies could do a straight up, vertical climb, they were that powerful.
I'm working on Old Gillows P-38 Lockheed lighting, 38 inch wingspan. originally it was designed for rubber bands. Thinking about upgrading to CO2...... just because I can!!! Your project is very inspirational........ show me something else, show me something new. Thanks for sharing. = )
Thank you very much. I'm in the middle. Of a middle of a De Haviland Mosquito build, going thru the same process. Build one is up. Build 2 should be up in a couple weeks. Please like, share, subscribe and smash that bell for future uploads.
Awsome build mate, im undergoing a similar build of the same plane, 3m wing span, i had plans for a 900mm span version running nitros, i had the plans blown up on a printer and am building to the plans old school style hand cutting and shaping everything by hand, i wish i had your router mate, would have made this much easier lol 😂😂
How did you make the custom bubble canopy? I have a 63" foamie P-38L that I am adding an FPV setup to. The standard way of doing that is to cut out the plastic panels on the canopy and just leave the frame. Through an FPV camera you can't tell there's no "glass" there. But I would much rather replace the greenhouse stock canopy with a bubble canopy. I was just going to use clay to make the outside surface of the stock canopy smooth and then heat some plexiglass over it to form it. I need to find the perfect material though to make sure it's perfectly clear. Yours looks pretty freaking outstanding.
I recognise that music! My dad was RAF and when I was a child in the 50’s he sang a rude RAF ditty to that tune “might be somebodies mother” was one line.
Wow I wish I had half your skill set, I wish I could find a good P38 kit I want something to run two Jet 90L engines, so I watched your video OMG I'm in awe lol
No, but but I have subscribed so I fully plan on a nice evening of uninterrupted viewing, a glass of wine(OR GLASSES LOL!) in which my lovely wife will become a youtube widow lol!
I was afraid to use gas engines since everything I've built is electric and lack of knowledge. I only recently got into gas with my Saito FG 90r radial for my Zero. Even so, I plan to use electric in my current twin motor warbird build. Electric is easy to contra-rotate but I had to buy custom props from Xoar.
i know this is far too late, but when cutting using cnc machines it's always best practice to cut the internal features of an element first and then cut the outline of the piece last. This avoids the piece shifting after its cut and then the internal features being cut in the wrong location relative to the entire piece itself.
There are a lot of short kits available on the market from many excellent cutters. I't would cost too much for me to do it. Also I'm in the middle of redrawing cutting my next project. Which I will have build videos for.
Hello Mike, I really need to build a router yours, do you have a link to the plans please. what size is your router? do you have a part list for your router??? Please let me know. I am building some large airframes for a conservation group in Kenya to help prevent poaching. I could really make good use of your router design.what model and or number is your cnc table, head where did you get it?
Brad H I got my plans from Dave Gatton (Sidewinder CNC). He charges for them now, I think about 250 which includes some sort of short kit. And to answer your other question. I bought all my cowl and canopy from Ziroli plans. Also bought the scoops ans other plastic parts. Hope this helps. Brad.
I forgot to mention, I'm using a Performax 1 1/4 Compact router variable speed. Small powerful aand does everything I need for light hobby cutting 1/4" ply to balsa. Go here for plans: www.davegatton.com/
You know, with those kind of skills, you could theoretically build a full sized version. And much akin to the DeHaviland Mosquito, as it would be assembled from wood and covered as you did your model, it would be smooth like the Mosquito and I would bet VERY fast. One can always dream.
Mosquito´s performance isnt that good, the thing was that when it got introduced, german heavy and air defence fighters where actually tactical bombers with guns and radars, the only real one was the bf110, and that thing was pretty old, 1940'german prototypes where already faster than the mosquito, not to mention, full metal and with radar too.
Have you seen the finished plane, I've been flying her for a couple of seasons now. There are 3 build videos and a couple flight videos on my page. I also have a new project on the work bench that I started la year ago: 125" De Haviland Mosquito.
Мaik !!!!! Mai fantastik!! ecscusmy .. Smail inglih transleid.....
There are 3 total build videos and 2 flight videos. If you enjoy the videos please sub, share and like. I'm currently working on a 125" De Haviland Mosquito. Thanks for watching.
Now that is art! My congratulations to the builder. I'd be nervous to fly it because it might crash. How many batteries and what voltage will it carry? Beautiful.
Funny you should mention that, it's all framed up. I started drawing one in November and started cutting in Dec, all framed up right now. I'll do a video soon
How in the world do you make a cnc router at home? I'd have at least coated the entire structure with carbon fiber or built the whole plane out of aluminium.
Bonjour / Hello, are you table to share the files in order to use it with a laser cutter (I hope it could works) thanks in advance. Beautiful work. Cordialy. Franck.
Hi There My name is Matthew I notice in your video on the P-38. You had cut out your on part on a cnc router. I have a cnc router and would like to build this plane as well. You be interested in sell your dxf file so I too can cut out all the parts.? And maybe any building tips that you learn along the way build the old p-38!!
Ok so I'm quite new to this entire community. But I don't see what the point of the circles in the pieces. Like is it for visual effect or is it actually helpful with the structure?
Insane!! Question , is the weight where you want it to be? It looks a tad heavy for the scale, what is the material? Your attention to detail is incredible!
Nice airplane but the originals had radiators built into the tail booms. Why didn't you put them on yours? Except for the fact that your model is electric.
What battery packs are you using? I have a 90 size P-51 Mustang that I have not built yet. Waiting to get retracts. I have about the same motor. The packs I have, I think are going to be too small. Love your retracts BTW :)
4ea 5s 9000 HV Thunder Power commercial/UAV batteries, in serial and parallel to create a 10s 18000 mah pack. Actually I'm sorry to say the Robart electric retracts are garbage.
