ZMF Aeolus Review, The Worlds Best Looking, and Sounding Headphones?
Hey Friends! In this video, I give a detailed review of the ZMF Aeolus Headphones. The review is focused on Build Quality, Comfort, Audio Quality, Audio Chain Synergies, and my overall conclusions. I utilize a music playlist that I have created of tracks I have heard many times and for the types of music, I enjoy comparing the sound of the ZMF Aeolus headphones to my reference headphones the Sennheiser 6XX. This allows you to get a feeling for what I enjoy as well as listen along with three different streaming music providers. The Sennheiser 650/6XX has sold thousands worldwide and is considered by many a great reference headphone for the price to performance ratio which is why I chose them.

Hey Marcello! What a great approach on a review! From start to finish. Mentioning your sources and the synergies... decribing what you experiance with in the test tracks... use case scenarios. ... look in the future with the BC build Your Aeolus set is indeed the most beautiful ZMF I saw, yet. Would love it the same way and attach my copper Forza aw balanced cable... one can dream :) Of course you nailed the production part and kept it super interesting, all the way. I am going to rewatch it later in 4k. Promise! Hope to see more of this kind of reviews by you!

Very good choice to go with the Uni Perf Suede pads! I love my Aeolus as well, it's my favorite headphone, especially to just melt away in my chair in the evening :D

Great video! I have a Lyr 3 and Bifrost 2 and have always enjoyed the 6XX. Definitely been looking at the Aeolus lately. Did you get the magnesium chassis or the standard aluminum one? Did you get the upgraded OFC cable and if you did, did that make a noticeable difference?

Hello Marcello, thanks a lot for this great review I just found! Actually, I’m thinking of replacing my Hifiman Ananda with the Aeolus but note you don’t really recommend them for classical music (what I listen to most together with jazz) and instead prefer the Ananda! Could you please expand on that? I recently bought a Naim Atom Uniti HE and although quite satisfied with the Ananda, was thinking of upgrading my headphones to exploit all the Naim’s potential. Many thanks in advance for your advice/ suggestions. Greetings from Brussels, Ignacio

What are your thoughts on the universe hybrid pads? I've been debating whether to get them with my Aeolus. Your sound signature preference you describe in this video aligns with mine pretty much perfectly

I think they are worth having with the Aeolus. They give a noticeably different sound which leans closer to the Verite. When I bought mine, I got the stock Aeolus pads and the universe hybrid. I have been happy with that choice even though I mostly listen with the stock pads. @Corey Heimer

Hey Marcello, would the Aeolus work well with the ifi ZEN DAC V2? I heard that they work well with tubes but was wondering if a budget amp would do the headphones justice

I am not 💯 percent as I haven’t used that unit. They definitely excel with tubes.

Hey @AFGuidesHD you can with a 1/4” adapter to 3.5mm but I would recommend a proper headphone amplifier and quality DAC for them to sound their best! If you go to ZMF’s website on checkout you can choose the connection you want, it comes with one cable and I would recommend grabbing the upgraded OFC cable in the connection you want. @ZMFheadphones service is terrific. Shoot them an email Zach and Bevin will take great care of you. @AFGuidesHD

Hi @yong chen ! Normal gain should be good to go. You could run on high gain and turn down the volume to see if you like that better, just be cautious when flipping between the modes always turn it all the way down to protect your hearing. Thanks for watching!

I do have the RAD-0 now but that’s in another price bracket all together. I still own the Aeolus so I could make further comparisons. Marcello, will the fiio btr5 bluetooth amp/dac (220 milliwatts of power in balanced mode) be powerful enough to drive zmf headphones? If yes, do they come with a 2.5 mm cable for the balanced connector on the DAP?

I don’t have the BTR5 on hand but a quick check of the power output settings and I would say it will be usable with some of the more efficient ZMF headphones but I really think to fully appreciate the quality of sound ZMF offers a tube hybrid or OTL amp would be what I would recommend, such as a Schiit LYR3. Are you strictly looking for a mobile setup?

The ZMF Atticus/Aeolus are more efficient than their 300hm 99db/mw would have you believe but to really appreciate their full sound capabilities again I would rather see you look at a more powerful amp. Focal headphones are very efficient. You could look at these instead tvp.ag/0FErdz0vrY or tvp.ag/0FEre00vrY if you are trying to keep it small for the www.zmfheadphones.com/atticus-Aeolus @Jeremy Abramson

@@MarcelloRostagni Understood. Maybe in a year or 2 portable DAP's will be more powerful. I just like the convenience of being able to clip the FIIO to my shirt for portability. I started off in Hi-Fi Bluetooth headphones, obviously my options are very limited. I have the hifiman Ananda Bluetooth and the Shure Aonic 50. Then I discovered the FIIO. Now I can't stop looking at headphones 😩

@@MarcelloRostagni My Aeolus should be here any day now and I'm currently using JDS EL AMP II. Honestly all those amps are too expensive for me because of exchange rate. Maybe if I stretch and save up for some months I can afford the Crack, but I'm not sure I'll be able to put it together.

That's a bit tougher in that range for a quality OTL. Maybe a Darkvoice but not sure how good it sounds.

Awesome collection @vincenthusvh ! I haven’t compared the Aeolus m to all those models as of the time of this message. I can only speak for the Verite Open and I can see owning both for myself. I love the midrange presentation of the Aeolus, and the warmer overall tuning vs. the Verite although the stage is smaller vs. the Verite Open. I think it will really come down to your personal preferences. The Eikon is top of my list to demo in 2021!

The soundstage on the Aeolus is fairly intimate @Hawaiin Cerveza , the HD800S has a larger expansive stage so they are pretty different. Thanks for watching and your support!!!

I think if you are more into a neutral signature with a larger stage I would look at either the ZMF Auteur or my personal favorite I am reviewing now from @ZMFheadphones the Verite Open which has a really cool 3 dimensional soundstage. www.zmfheadphones.com/auteur-eikon or www.zmfheadphones.com/verite

Well the Bluesound Nodi2i uses a Texas Instrument Dac aka Burr Brown chip with a pretty smooth implementation to my ears. It’s very easy going with a touch of warmth. I enjoyed it quite a bit in my 2 channel speaker system when I had it. So when I try to synergize a system for my tastes I usually try to balance between the amp, Dac and headphones or speakers. Do you prefer a brighter more treble focused signature or more mids and bass @Peter van der Ham ?

@RS / SS I just used them as my reference for sound comparisons so I could describe audibly the differences between the headphones. The 6XX are fantastic, I still own mine and love them.
