Went to my local pool supplier, got a discarded cell for $20 bucks, recovered a heap of good plates and voila, my old EI unit's up and running again! Thanks Fresco!

This worked for me too. Thanks for posting this video! You saved me from having to buy another cell and wait for it's delivery. I had to make one adjustment to your instructions because it would not work at first. I pulled off the black boot inside the cell. The electrode/connection rod was actually attached (or welded) to the original plate and that piece was still there. So, when I inserted my other plate with the tab cut it would not go all the way in and not make good connection, and the bottom was down too far That's probably why you had to notch the bottom of your plate. I pulled off the black boot inside and I worked the "new" plate/tab up beside the electrode to assure good contact. Now the bottoms of the plates were all even and I didn't have to notch the bottom of the plate. It worked.

Melbourne, Australia here. My Zodiac Ei25 did have the very same issue. It has ~6500h. Your solution did work but with a small change. The change I had to use was caused by the bottom clip not being able to create a proper electrical contact with the modified plate. The solution I used was to clean the bottom contact and then add a spring to the plate (where the cut has been done) , then insert a screw into the spring pointing down with the screw head. In this way I did succeed to have a proper electrical contact between the modified plate and bottom contact. After doing this the Zodiac did start working properly with me being able to change the output to maximum. Thanks a lot for the tip provided in your video. I expect this workaround to work for a while, but I did order one new cell anyway with $459AUD from eBay pool shop.

Great tip friend! You gave me a start. The electrode had corroded and new tip was too short to make contact with the eroded electrode. I ended up cutting about 1/4 inch off the bottom effectively lengthening the tip. I put cut strips if a bicycle inner tube on top of the plate between the two taller ones. I made it thick enough that it put pressure from the clip on the top of the plate. Voila! It worked, how long I don't know for how long but It buys me time!

Can you explain to me what you did exactly? My leads are frayed going into the little head thing. Wondering if i can take them apart and redo them?mine is saying no flow sometimes, sometimes low temp or salt. My cell is brand new. I cant find the replacement for the cord. Wondering if there is a way to repair?

Thanks Brother you saved me a few hundred as well. I did not think this was my problem, because you cannot tell that the plate is all ate up until you actually pull all of them out of the cell. I pulled them out and one of my active plates were worse than yours was. Fix worked great.

HI Fresco, The NO flow red light is the blue wire it is connected to a probe that needs to touch the water inside the cell. This tells the machine that there is water present or water flow. There is a straw that pulls the air out of the top of the cell. If the tube or straw is missing or broken, the cell will have air at the top and the red NO flow light will come on, even if you have plenty of water flow. The Titanium plates have a coating on them, once the coating wears off, it will not convert sodium chloride to chlorine. You cannot just put any metal plate inside, it will not work. Your troubleshooting was very ingenuous, nice work but it will not last long. Basically, you were able to re connect the grounding probe that connected the blue wire to the water probe that tells the machine to turn on. Yay, nice work,,, but,,, the plates have a 3 to 4 year life before they wear out. Acid washing is very important also, you need to check and clean the cell at least monthly, it not, the calcium that bridges the gap will eat the iridium coating and shorten the life of the cell.
@johnwaldee6283
@johnwaldee6283 5 лет назад
Do you know specifically how the blue wire gets its signal that there is water at the sensor? I have already replaced my chlorination unit and still getting no flow. I am wanting to find some way to troubleshoot it.

Thanks mate. Fixed my Zodiac Tri Chlorinator as shown. Had to reset the Cell Hours as well before it started working. Hopefully will get a few more years out of it now. They could so easily make these plates consumables instead of nearly charging the cost of a complete new system just for the cell.

Thank you so much. I got the run around as you. Jandy had me order the cover assembly, however after trying your fix, it worked. I made the cuts with metal snips and it worked great. Good video and great you took the time to make it . I've only been able to get 2-1/2 years out of a Jandy APure35 cell. Today I ordered a third one (R0511400). Seems the black capped electrode corrodes at the weld where it joins the plate. While waiting for the new one I decided to see if I could cobble up one from the old units. I took one of the "red" electrodes out and made it into a "black". The electrodes will come out by clamping the terminal with vise grips and hammering down on the cap. The electrode post on the plate inserts into the terinal pin and is held in by an interference fit. The post on the plate goes through the cap and is sealed by an o-ring that seats against the bottom of the cap. Before installing the replacement red for the black, sand down some of the electrode post so it will insert more easily into the terminal pin. If you use the red terminal pin (it is split) it will have to be spread slightly to get a snug fit with the electrical cap because the black terminal has a larger diameter. When my pool was build the crew left behind a "dummy" cap, so I was able remove the cell without having to close down the pool. I got by with clorine tablets in the meantime. Hope this is helpful. This method, although requires ordering a replacement or two over the years, it will give a better bond of the electrode to the plate and doesn't require cutting the plates.

This was helpful, thank you. My issue was that the plate that made contact with the electrode had worn through. I was not able to solder a new contact because the solder would not adhere to the electrode, but I was able to tack weld it. Be careful if you weld to stainless steel.

The chlorinator cell consists of parallel titanium plates coated with ruthenium and sometimes iridium Just buy the plates if you have to replace them! Found this on Wikipedia To clean them mix Muriatic Acid about 2/3 with water remove the unit flip upside down and pour the acid mix in and let soak a few minutes. Don't do it too often it does wear out the plates.

you should not use stainless. 1 its expensive, 2 the chrome in them will make chromates that are toxic 3 they will be consumed. You could use copper, its expansive, will be consumed but the copper compounds are not very toxic to most people and would help kill algae. Typically companies use titanium because it last longer and cheap. the best thing would be platinum coated items but that is a lot of money.

@jpcharette9917
@jpcharette9917 8 лет назад
The reason your center plate is shorter is due to arcing. The plate was originally welded to the center contact. The contact corroded and then started to arc with the plate, burning away the bottom. Not a good idea to just sit a plate on the contact. Shorting will occur constantly and could damage your salt water chlorinator.

Absolute rubbish it needs more energy to do this than cracking the salt to Cl and O2
@brensmith9065
@brensmith9065 6 лет назад
I should clarify. H2O is constantly breaking and re-making its bonds, constantly. Adding energy like heat speeds this up. Oxygen is highly polar and bonds with 2 Hydrogen atoms to form water and these bonds are constantly broken and remade. Hydrogen can form H2 gas but its more likely to re-bond with oxygen to form H2O. Adding electrical current does break this bond but it quickly reforms to H2O. However, the salt is broken into NA/Cl2. Sodium and Chlorine gas. The sodium doesn't last long (its very highly reactive) and does dissipate with the billions of H2O molecules. The Cl2 doesn't last long as well but in Gas form, Cl2, it'll last longer than the sodium, which is what we want. Chlorine! Yes adding too much energy can break molecule bonds but given we start with H2O and NaCl we always end up with H20 and Cl2 (gas). Yes this is simplified (not showing ions) but we are not going to end up with H2 gas when there is highly reactive Oxygen to bond with. End of story.
@PlasticAssasin8

worked for me. The plates are bonded to the contacts and are one piece all the way to the external connector. As long as the plate is near the contact it will work. The part that looks like rubber is just a cover for the contact area.
