Michael Schilling Good job dude,especially for a low budget ,not many actors,and,I'm assuming,your first film.I like the fact that your zombies are proper zombies,slow,dumb,and shambling.I hate fast,running zombies.And I like the fact that you made the guy smart enough to have a firearm and know how to use it, both are big pluses in my view when it comes to zombie films.Looking forward to your next one.Amongst the flood of zombie related stuff out there nowadays,this is some of the better work I've seen,and I've seen a lot.Keep it up.I'm sure it will get even better with each installment.BTW,was that a Taurus semi-auto pistol the guy had?The logo on the slide looked kind of like it but I didn't get a good look at it.Just curious.The shooting of zombies is the best part of a zombie movie for me. ;)

Jarrett Wisener That was awesome feedback Jarrett! Thanks so much! Was my first real short film and agree w/ you as I wanted to stay true to the original zombie style. Firearms are always awesome in the apocalypse and we'll be working more of that into episode 2, but not too much as that would make it too easy for the survivors. : ) And good eye cause that was a Taurus 24/7. Actually a full replica bb gun from amazon. These companies are nothing but amazing at reproducing weapons. I'm writing the 2nd episode now and hope to be shooting withing the next month. Long and tedious wait for you viewers... Trust me I know! Takes so much time to put these together, but the end product I feel is pretty awesome for amatuer make-up, effects & cinematograpy. Gonna try hard to work more with the "actors" this time around too.

Michael Schilling Cool man, I'm really looking forward to it, but I realize that you can't rush good art.Far better to take your time and turn out quality material.And with practice comes experience.I'm sure that as you do more of these, the make-up and everything else will get better.I've subscribed so that I'll know as soon as the next one is ready.Is each one going to be it's own story or will they become an ongoing storyline where they are all sort of linked together in some way.Either way is good.Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing you do both.After seeing way too many poorly done short horror films online, it's good to see someone putting out something as good as this.Keep it going man!If the first one was this good, I can imagine how good it will be 5 or 10 episodes in.I hope you get offered a deal to make it into a web series.Even better, Netflix.Then you would have more of a budget and everything else.

Jarrett Wisener We're looking to merge the storylines as we move episode to episode. I think the hardest thing i'm running into are locations to shoot. I can have the best story in the world, but if I can't find a desolate place to shoot, then I'm kinda screwed. Right now just enjoy doing this for fun. Going to try and enter into the STL International Film Festival and see if I can get it shown at the Tivoli (a local small time movie theater) that shows shorts & independent films to the public. You're enthusiasm is infectious. Makes me want to do better. : )

@@ZMAMShow And you succeed in perfecting it all, no doubt. It all looks very professional from my average viewer's perspective. I really enjoyed watching the series through wihout a single thought of it being made by amateurs. Everyone plays just fine. Got me a couple of the most faved chars(Ryan and Mike, predictable, i think) but story-wise only, not for any differences in acting skills. As for makeup - maybe the eyes of a few zombies were looking a bit too fresh and live for belonging to the walking dead in comparison with some other zeds from this show. Nothing serious and of no big harm to the immersion. Thanks again, guys. Keep it up! PS English is not my first language, apologies if smth i said sounds a bit broken.

Alex Francisc Yes it definitely is. But I enjoy most of all zombie movies out there (minus a few otrocities). Just trying to tell our own story. Hard when it's pretty much all been done. But nevertheless, we're pushing forward trying to entertain along the way. : )

+Kurt Feltenberger Thanks Kurt. Point taken. Lighting was a nightmare and especially for amateurs like us. Many of the homes including mine where we shot did not have outside floods. Ryan does hit the lights at top of stairs when heading down and to the outside.. Think the main idea was that things were happening quickly and would someone (like Ryan) take the time to go turn on all of their lights (upstairs or downstairs) before moving outside...? Not sure myself to be honest, but again you have a good point. the next episode is during the day so we'll see how that atmosphere turns out. That night time stuff is definitely intense. :)

Cool! Beyond it being dark in the scenes, what struck me as off was that as I (I'd say we indicating most of us, but I'm not going to presume) walk through the house at night I reflexively turn on the lights as I go...especially if I hear something go "bump" in the night. Can't want for the next part!

Infinity Brony The story is non linear.. What you see in the beginning is a post Ryan, way into the future, as we have not gotten their yet (which now spoils the story a bit, but thought this would clarify). There are more episodes to come that tie it all in. So the first scene you're seeing in the woods is way in the future as he reflects back to the first night of the apocalypse (during the Fall of the previous year) and how it destroyed his life. This style is meant through off the view a bit as they put together the story..

+DougnTX Hi Doug and thanks for the comment. I'll keep it in mind on my future videos. I do the intro for a couple reasons. 1) To call out the people who were involved as they don't get too many other chances to have their name shown on the work. 2) Hopefully fans recognize my work when they see the intro. However I did change the intro for episodes 2 - 4 to get away from the Walking Dead likeness. But, you make a good point all the same. Good thing about RU-vid is, you can skip the intro if it's a bother. ; ) Acting is a constant thing I work on w/ my close friends. The only thing I can say is that they are not even amateur actors. They try their hardest and I think if the fans can remember that these peeps are not real actors, it may lessen the blow of the un-natural acting. Well... maybe a lil bit. As far as the acting, look at some of the stuff put out by The Assylum. It's not much better and those folks are paid pretty well for doing so. Keep up the good work.

Thanks +sopwithtv! That's good feedback. As an amateur filmmaker, I've definitely learned a lot over the last few years. Weird enough, the flash backs were consciously meant to be confusing, so that the next episodes would bring more to light. But I hear you on the profanity. True, not all speak like that, but I've found when in intense situations; words come out.. lol. Either way, I'm sure I can find better ways to bring out that emotion. Hopefully it did not offend you too much. We actually do have episodes 2, 3 and 4 already out there. I changed the intro b/c it really was too much like the Walking Dead. I have links in the comments if you get a chance to watch. Would love to hear if you enjoyed them or not. Any other feed back if you're enjoying the story.

Nope, not too offended! :-) Just a thought to help A) broaden the audience (when parents watch you get two viewers - when their kids watch you get four) and B) suggest that film makers have everything to gain and nothing to lose by ditching profanity (again, no one ever yelled "I want more cussing!" before storming out of a theater). IMHO, the more you ask of amateur actors, the weaker the film will be. I do not want to throw your actors under the bus - they were great! But at the amateur level, you were smart not to ask them to carry too much burden with extensive dialogue. That's good film making, and it puts everyone in a position to succeed rather than setting up for failure. And ignore the haters. The reality is that it's an amateur film on a small budget, and you did an outstanding job with it. I will definitely watch the next episodes since I'm a bit of a zombie nut. IMHO, many of the critiques on this thread are not positive and constructive, but are based on unrealistic expectations. You just can't make Titanic on a Sharknado budget. What is realistic is to make a fun, engaging short film and lay the foundation for a good story and future growth. This film accomplished that and I enjoyed it. And I recommend that audiences be very careful about criticizing a project that cost them no work or effort and they got to watch it for free. Those who want good films are going to have to allow amateur film makers some space to learn, experiment and grow. So ignore the haters and keep digging. :-)

Well said and thank you. Always refreshing to see those like yourself that actually get it. If people only understood how much work goes into producing even something as small as this; I know it would blow their minds. I try not to let the negative comments get to me, although I do sometimes like to give a response just cause I can... : ) We'll keep the creativity going as long as I have peeps to help it come to life. May even look to some local college talent. Could be good.

roasthunter Good feedback. I found it hard to find a way for him to look dirty since he was mainly in the home over those 2 months into the winter since the apocalypse started. Guess I should have made him go on a diet for the scene. :) We start shooting the next episode in September. Hope you'll be back to continue the story.

Re making the actor look more dishevelled, he was looking rather too well manicured for a guy living in a zombie apocalypse. I'd imagine no power so less clean cloths, not such a well sculptured beard, longer hair that hasn't just seen the barber :) Stuff like that.

Amirah_princess it’s true and especially most people do not listen when told to do something. When I wrote this episode, my thoughts were that when Ryan saw his next door neighbor friend Jason; he was shocked/confused/scared all at the same time. Not quite understanding what he just saw. As he backs up he hits the door ledge and trips backwards, unable to get proper footing to close the door. So he scrambles backwards to find a weapon. It was my first attempt at filming an action scene and I would do something’s differently if given the chance.

Thanks for your comment. I'm thrilled you enjoyed our project! It is difficult to achieve a quality product w/o the right gear... as i've been learning over the years. BUT DON'T LET THAT STOP YOUR DREAM. You can and will get there. I'd say start off slow, maybe with some 5-7 min short stories.. can even be zombie related. But save your "Big Project" for when you've acquired some more skills. Watch a bunch of tutorials online and see if you can get your hands on computer software Adobe After Effects and/or Adobe Premiere. There are definitely other editing programs out there, but these will help you to achieve a great look for your footage. And if you can't get these, at least find some editing software to use so you can splice your scenes together. I once used Sony Movie Maker, that was a good one and fairly inexpensive. I bet there are even free ones out there, but you'll have to do some looking. If you have a decent cell phone, you could start capturing your scenes on that. Upload to ur computer and then splice together. Upgrade to a better camera if you feel this is something you really want to get in to. And most importantly, have a plan. Write out some script and use descriptions around it so your "actors" can try and follow your vision. Give them time to prepare and do your best! Look up some tutorials on VideoCopilot.net and there's an awesome/funny show called FilmRiot that I'd highly recommend.

For those who do get to watch the whole episode, you'll see what happens to Ryan and causes his depression, not wanting to continue on. However he does due to survival instinct. As the writer and director of this, I feel part of Ryan is hoping that he doesn't wake up, that's why he doesn't put up defenses. He lives b/c fate thus far has allowed him to. Sorry you didn't get to experience it all.

We were so excited to use the new prosthetics we bought and I didn't know how many episodes we'd actually do; so we got a little crazy with the makeup on the 1st episode. : ) Guilty. Glad we could provide some good entertainment for ya. There's more in the works.

Thanks for positive comments Anna. I think most people like yourself appreciate what we've tried to accomplish here and we're getting better with each episode I think. And thanks for the feedback on the make-up. Night time scenes make it easier to sell the makeup; and daytime is obviously harder. But like most things on this project, I continue to learn. Episode 2 starts w/ the 4 survivors searching for supplies, so hopefully you had a chance to watch in order as it makes a little more sense that way. I am from STL :) As for the broadcaster, probably redundant for those of us who live in Missouri, but since there are so many municipalities in the STL & St. Charles area, I figure them calling out the city location would make sense. Otherwise peeps might get confused and think it was in the STL county/city. Either way, just one of those added details. : )

I watched pt. 2, then realized I was on a series, then watched the others in order. Seriously, nice work and thanks for the entertainment & replies. I think y'all have done quite well with what you have at your disposal, by what I've gathered. I've watched a TON of horror, and zombie works, ( both professional and amateurish) and a lot of online series & shorts are horrible with a lot of heart, but yours has some actual follow through and tender moments as well.
