I play a Magic the Gathering Online Legacy league with Blue Dredge, the classic archetype re-emerges thanks to patreon subscriber Supergub. Dredge has been a powerful deck ever since Time Spiral block gave us Bridge from Below, Narcomoeba and Dread Return. It's known as a glass cannon, great when nobody is playing graveyard hate, always wins game 1 then struggles to win sideboard games... well what if this "always wins game 1" deck had Force of Will and Daze in it to protect itself? Brainstorm to fix its draws and/or have explosive dredge turns? This new take on blue dredge has been putting up results lately and I had to try it! These zombies are wizards too! MTG

Legacy dredge is such a unique deck in the way it plays and how it’s meant to be handled. Really does require a different way of thinking, props to the dredge experts out there.

at 23:30, you offered a line to lethal to your goblins opponent that didn't exist. Boast requires the boasting creature to have attacked, not for you to have attacked, so they could not play a post combat broadside and boast to fling for lethal.

@@BoshNRoll I don't think that anyone really did. I had to look up boast rulings the other day though, since someone looked at birgi for the first time and asked about boast. I always forget that she has that flavour text.

I was the round 1 opponent, good games! I pretty much only play lands and do always feel favored against dredge. Tabernacle is an absolute house, I pretty much never lose to the zombie tokens and only lose to Ichorid/Hogaak beats when I can't find a Maze of Ith.

Hey Brian, I'm the goblins player from round 2. Thanks for the match. I'm fairly new to modo, I did mean to exile your lands on the first turn of game 2, I just clicked through it. There were several other decisions that I made that I said welp that was a punt.

As someone who often loses to dredge it does feel good to see the mighty Bosh make mistakes. I'm not just losing because "it's a bad matchup" I lose because they are good players. 42:27

At the end of Round 2 Game 1 around 16:00 - 17:00 there was an out to their board state while still playing Hogaak. You had Ichorid and Zombie in play > convoke Hogaak > sacrifice Ichorid to Cabal Therapy leaves you with an untapped zombie in exchange for their 3 life. I think you’re in good shape if you make it through that turn.

one of my first tastes of janky power was manaless dredge with gitaxian probe and all the trappings. Not finishing with lab man or anything that simple no, but bridge from below and flamekin zealot swining for 60 in one punch

As long as Brian wants to see half of his deck, the magic gods will conspire to make sure there's nothing useful in it. The monkey's paw wager of Island, Ponder, Keep has the consequence that you'll always be disappointed when you look at more than 3 cards at a time.

i used to play led dredge on mtgo, and to be fair, i think brainstorm and gaze are harder to use optimally than the plain sorceries of led dredge

using the ichorid to cast hogaak was the line game 1 vs goblins imo could therapy afterwards and have a zombie to block

Dredge was actually my first modern deck....i bought grave trolls super cheap before they were unbanned, and most of the other cards too (but i played a casual fun GY deck) and then after grave troll got unbanned i only had to spend like 100$ to make the full modern deck. Disnt last long, but was fun.

Winds was played in old extended versions. It’s probably just worse than too many legacy options, like Careful Study and Brainstorm.

What's the logic for doing draw effects during your upkeep (especially when you're not sure if you'll hit more dredgers)? Why not take your draw step and decide after?

If I miss on dredgers, I can Gaze more into the graveyard before my draw step. Doesn’t work as well the other way.

@@BoshNRoll If you have one dredger in graveyard: Scenario 1: -Use brainstorm in upkeep -Dredge once, potentially miss -Gaze before draw step to maybe find more (can still miss) -You wasted 2 draws (from Brainstorm) no matter what and maybe 1 from your draw step Scenario 2: -Take your draw step and dredge once -If you miss, you can still Gaze. -If that one also misses, at least you didn't waste your Brainstorm and can decide what to do. It seems like there's no gain in going in the upkeep?

Because the draw effects in the deck all do something else after they resolve. For Coliseum, it's discard, so would you rather draw 4 then discard 3 (eg, Coliseum in main phase) or draw 3 then discard 3 then draw 1 (Coliseum in upkeep) - Upkeep is better. For Brainstorm it's draw 4 then put back 2 or draw 3, put back 2, draw 1. To some degree it's about explosiveness vs consistency and what's in your hand/if you know the top of your deck can change when it's right, but it does make sense to Upkeep the effects

I still like having an enabler over otherworldly gaze, 19 blue without it. Just wasn't impressed but i haven't tried daze in my dredge deck, yet. Maybe looting. Could try hapless researcher. Or Breakthrough with counter back up sounds insane.

Is Gaze better than Breakthrough?

Gaze can get narcomoeba into play and can let you draw a sb card if you need it. Breakthrough is more powerful but that's not always what you need.

It's strictly different. Gaze is more stable, breakthrough is more powerful. There are other dredge decks that play Breakthrough and not Gaze.

I don’t think adding Force to a deck that hasn’t aged well can bring it back to life. It just doesn’t seem powerful enough.

Nice to see good old dredge in legacy again. Unfortunately this build is missing the most important thing about dredge which is being able to overwhelm your opponent with creatures. No amalgam is a big mistake imo, it comes in for free and pitches the force and grief. Not running 4 ichorid also a mistake imo. Gaak and daze probably unnecessary extras. You can run additional force effects in the side and you have therapy already :)

This is the stock list that has been doing great in leagues on mtgo for awhile. It's a more midrange version and not meant to be insanely explosive.

I think your take on the deck is interesting 🤔 I agree generally with your sentiments but it is also clear to me even as a non legacy player how powerful Daze and Force really are. Allow you to stop your opponent interfering with your game plan, and since dredge only has one game plan you want it to work.

The most important thing is good sequencing which Bosh was completely missing in this league. The more aggressive lists just fall apart to interaction that why this one's been doing better.
