The passwords change depending on what your amount of neighbors are. The middle letters are always the same for the level, the first and last letters change depending on how many victims are available. Other than that, everything resets

JonTron is right. I played ZAMN obsessively as a kid and can say with 100% confidence the passwords remember the number of victims you saved at the end of the prior level.

+Kurt Cefra I'm guessing they have a password for each state of amount of neighbors. So you have 3 (or 4?) passwords for each stage.

+´Tomas Muir Try 10 different passwords. One each for all ten possible victims in the level. I mentioned above, the middle two letters are for the level itself, the first and last letters are the ones that govern the amount of victims you have

jon is right in that the number of neighbors are saved by the password and if you run out of neighbors its game over. he is wrong however in equating neighbors to lives. if a neighbor dies, they are gone for the whole game unless you get an extra victim bonus, thus making each level progressively harder if you fail to save neighbors. lives are a seperate mechanic. you can lose either by having all the neighbors die OR losing all your lives.

For the neighbor debate at the beginning, Arin saying it was a "generic code..." I just wanna say this. 4 letters is enough to store all the scenarios of x amount of neighbors on level y. Assuming there are 99 levels, with up to 10 neighbors on each level, there are 990 different codes that need to be used to store this data. The code is 4 letters, which means it has 26^4 possibilities = 456,976 total possibilities. MATH HAS BETRAYED YOU, ARIN.

+David Loius That would mean they need 495 codes. Because you only need to account for 9 neighbors; since once the 10th dies you lose.

what do they mean it wasnt a design choice to have items few and far between?? that is probably the most common motif in survival horror games, and of course it adds to the effect. they want you to feel helpless!

Kinda random, but in tf2, I had some 3D glasses for my scout, so I asked around as to what would make him look like the guy in ZAmN. (Crafty Hair and Spooky Sleeves). So now, my Scout looks as much like that guy as possible. And it only matters to me because I loved the Grumps' series on this.

John is right you start with ten and as they die the deaths carry between rounds. I love this game and played it a ton as a kid. I'm glad you're going to try to finish it

That was actually quite helpful and informative, thanks! I could have sworn there's only one password per level, since I saw a list in some magazine when the game was new. Yes, I remember that. It might have been a list of more or less optimal passwords then, as in 10 neighbours left plus some inventory stuff.

The "neighbors die forever" thing can actually make it impossible to complete certain levels if you get below a certain treshold. In some cases you have absolutely NO way to get to the neighbors before they die... Like, as you might have noticed, in that mall where the axe kid came in from offscreen the moment you spotted the neighbors. I remember renting the game, and finding myself stuck on one of the water levels, since the only remaining neighbors spawned on an island.

Ego is correct about the neighbors. Here's the details about them: In each of the 48 stages, which includes seven optional bonus levels, the goal is to rescue the surviving neighbors by touching them, at which point a door opens that will take the player to the next stage. If the player does not find a neighbor fast enough, an enemy will kill them when touched, preventing them from being saved for the remainder of the game or until an "Extra Bonus Victim" is awarded.

tiaxanderson you are correct about the first part that you sourced from wikipedia. You can have up to 10 remaining neighbors (which can be increased via your score). Once a neighbor dies, it is dead for good. If you lose all your neighbors, you're kaput. Again, you can gain remaining neighbors with your score. The number of remaining neighbors carries over from level to level. [Via Wikipedia]

Yes, this game is hard, but it's hard in every good way possible, thus giving off a real feeling of accomplishment when you actually beat it. This is the kind of game that kicks your ass and then picks you back up for another round.

Here's how the passwords work: The passwords are only for which level to start on and the number of neighbors remaining. Everytime you start a game with a password you start with the default items and lives (same as starting the same from level 1). There are passwords for levels 5, 9, 13, 17, 21, 25, 29, 33, 37, 41 and 45 AND for neighbors remaining from 1-10. Arin chose a password for 3 remaining neighbors .

I could be wrong, but I think bonus levels are the exception, and have a predetermined amount. They won't negatively effect your count but they will give you more points to potentially increase your count.

Jon is absolutely right about how the victims work. He even got the initial number, ten, right. One thing he missed, though, is that you can get victims back by getting enough points. The reason L & R don't switch weapons in this game is that it was made in the early days of shoulder buttons, before developers knew what they were really useful for.

Jon is correct that the game remembers the amount of neighbors that you had when you got the code. However, since Ego entered in a random code for their level then the game remembered how many neighbors are associated with that code. In other words there is a different code for each level with a code depending on how many neighbors you left the level with. As well, the default number of neighbors is 10 for every level and every time you lose a neighbor that number is reduced 1 per neighbor lost.

The passwords don't recall the score (The Grumps started with 0) because you also get points for killing enemies, picking up money, etc. Also there are 131 passwords in total: 11 basic starting levels (5,9,13,17,21,15,19,33,37,41,45) The Credits Bonus Levels (Allows you to play through 33B, 9B, then 12B then crashes) and 1 code for Day of the Tentacle (as far as I know) because you have to start with 10 neighbors.

"I before E except after C" while yes being a dialect, is more so simply considered a Rule of Thumb, and as such it isn't always accurate or reliable for every use. It's simply a mnemonic turn of phrase used to help people remember spelling as they learn. Nothing more than a teaching aid, & as such obviously isn't used by every teacher when being taught English. Making it not strictly limited to Britian. I had no intentions of arguing. Simply shedding light & sharing knowledge is all. :)

As a common player of this game,i have to say it is way harder to beat this from midway rather than from the beginning because of all the weapon farm.

As an avid zombies player who has beaten the game you start with 10 neighbors. as they die you lose them for good. however their are a few ways to gain new neighbors weather you gain enough points or through giant baby killing (the produce one new baby neighbor if you defeat them) codes are unique to the amount of neighbors you had at that point in the game. so the new code they just got will start them with one neighbor.

Yes I'm sure. The password doesn't remember items, so it only has to give you the level and number of neighbors remaining, meaning there are 110 different password combinations for the basic levels (10 neighbors and 11 starting levels) in addition to a few more passwords to the bonus levels. There are also 456,976 different password combinations if my math is correct.

Y isn't a vowel. It's only considered a vowel when used at the end of words, mainly verbs, but when used in the beginning, such as young or yeast, it's a consonant.
