I like Binti Jua because of how she helped the child that fell into the gorilla enclosure at Brookfield Zoo.

My favorite gorilla was Jomo at the Cincinnati Zoo but unfortunately he has since passed. The reason I liked him so much was because I would always find him interacting with guests in the indoor exhibit.

I can see the criticism of those gorilla and bonobo exhibits, but I agree that function should trump form in designing living space for very active, agile, intelligent animals. Making it look authentic is really just for visitors' benefit. The important thing is that the apes are happy, and that seems to be the case, so.

I was just there at the zoo! I loved it so much! It was the first time my girlfriend ever went to a zoo as a whole and what a great one to start with! We both loved every second, but she was completely mesmerized with all the animals and themes of the zoo. I’ve been to this zoo a few times, but taking her to her first zoo was magical.

I fangirled when I saw those bonobos my son thought I was crazy because I cried I was also 8 months pregnant but STILL. Great zoo enjoyed our visit.

As a zoology major myself, I love these exhibits and they really stand out as a personal favorite. The great apes are such wonderful species and deserve so much love and care.

This tour was DEFINITELY worth the wait, especially after the zoo adventure I had today. Seeing some familiar animals as well as those that I've always been wanting to see, nd I was very pleased on how you presented this episode; it even got a couple of laughs out of me. I was amazed on how well detailed the inside Gorilla Habitat was, and I'm glad how the Columbus Zoo continues to keep their animals enriched and happy. Can't wait to visit this next year! As for my favorite Gorilla, I love all the ones I work alongside at Animal Kingdom. But both Grace and Adda hold special place in my heart, especially since I get to see both them before they were even 24 hours old, and watch them grow up. Plus I have an admiration for their father, Gino, who has played an important role in the Gorilla Species Survival Plan.

An interesting fact about Columbus' Bonobo Exhibit, It was originally built for giant pandas, which the the zoo housed for a short period in 1992.

might I recommend the Bronx Zoo's Congo Gorilla Forest? It differs from The Columbus Zoo's exhibit in that it feels more naturalistic and is modeled to look like an actual African Rainforest, thus making the experience more immersive

Personal favorite gorilla is one I never actually got to see in person but still left a mark. The Philadelphia Zoo had a gorilla named Massa who died when I was one but they erected a statue of him on zoo grounds. My grandfather once took a photo of my cousin and I sitting on the statue that he loved so much, he turned it into a jigsaw puzzle. It might be the start of my love of animals and is often the first thing I think about when I think about gorillas.

Fort Worth Zoo in Texas is getting African Leopards next year as part of there hunters of Africa and Asia exhibit, also on the plans are Clouded Leopards, and bringing back Cheetahs, Lions, Malayan Tigers, Striped Hyenas, Grant's Zebra, several bird species and while not confirmed rumored to be bringing back Nubian Ibex as well.

My favorite gorilla is Tommy, one of the two silverbacks in the bachelor group at my local zoo. He's my favorite because when nobody is looking, he'll run up or smack the glass to mess with people.

Great tour as always. I suppose that I can say my favourite gorilla was the world famous Snowflake, AKA Copito or Floquet, the albino gorilla who lived in the Barcelona Zoo. I remember seeing him quite often, up until his death in 2003.

I never thought I would hear about a UK zoo on zoo tours. Howletts wild animal park is marvellous. Regarding the gorrilas the charity who owns Howletts and their sister park Port Lympne have released over 70 western lowland gorilla into the wild. The asprinall foundation have also successfully released zoo born javan languar, javan gibbon, grizzled leaf monkey, European bison, prezawski horse, cheetah and African hunting dog into the wild. Soon their herd of thirteen African elephants will be released into the wild.

My favorite gorilla is Bokito from Rotterdam Zoo, because he is the silverback of my homezoo and has a special story.

My fave Gorilla is Charles from the Toronto zoo, he's the silverback of the family and is generally laid back. Everytime me and my family go there I always make sure to visit him. One year I kinda got emotional when I thought he died since he was dealing with a bad tooth infection but he recovered and I think is still doing well to this very day ^^ Edit: did you know he's also an artist? The Zoo sells art pieces that he painted :) maybe I'll pick one up

The greatest Gorillas in the US are the collection of Gorillas at ZOO Atlanta. TAZ being the father of the family is likely to be noted as the most important gorilla but people love Batchlor group member Charlie or Floyd the youngest in the larger family group as their favorite. William B III just born in May 2023 will be the up and coming star likely in the second family group of gorillas.

Columbus soon will not be the only zoo with African Leopards, one of my local zoos, the Fort Worth Zoo, will be getting African Leopards next year as part of their A Wilder Vision master plan! It will be the very first time the Fort Worth Zoo has had African Leopards. Other new species coming include African Wild Dogs and Clouded Leopards part of their Hunters Of Africa and Asia exhibit.

Just saying but In my opinion the highlights of this zoo tour for me were the leopard, African grey parrot and the cute and very shy Okapi.

Why is it that so few zoos have african leopards compared to amur leopards?

Apparently the Southwick’s Zoo has an African Leopard and Bengal Tiger (though it’s likely to not be genetically pure).

One of the scientific supervisors of the international studbook for bonobos (managed at Antwerp Zoo) told me that they are not popular at American zoos because they display too much "breeding behaviour".

Columbus zoo can’t even tell a pregnant female from an 8 year old Blackback! Poor Sully gave birth at age 8 to her beautiful baby. Keepers thought she was male all this time. Unacceptable! I’m glad both of them are doing ok!🙏🏽

Ngl, this exhibit's kind of underwhelming. Given the exorbitant cost they took for later expansions like Asia Quest, Polar Frontier and Heart of Africa, this pales in comparison. 1: A good portion of the animals residing in this zone aren't even from the Congo. I understand that Congolese animals are hard to come by and imports are generally frowned upon, but even basic Congolese birds like grey-cheeked hornbills, African pygmy goose, or green wood-hoopoe are missing. If they threw some invertebrates and herps in the research station overlooking the aviary and the colobus, that would also round things out really nicely. 2: A lot of the small primate enclosures are pretty lacking as far as bushes and foliage go, and there's a lack of complex climbing structures that places like Bronx or even Franklin Park employ for their monkeys/lemurs respectively. 3: The gorilla debacle. If they had one Howletts' style enclosure and one genuinely immersive one, and themed the Howletts' style one like a research station (maybe even have an affiliation with Ohio State), that would yield a more consistent design. Same deal with the bonobo dayrooms, but luckily they have a wonderful outside enclosure. 4. The African leopard enclosure's fine, although these guys are probably the closest we'll get to having legit African leopards in an AZA facility. Unless Fort Worth puts their money where their mouth is, and chances are, given how Amur leopards LOATHE the heat... 5. Fake duikers. Need I say more? Not bad, but given the rest of the zoo, it pales.

There is a huge push at the zoo right now to improve and modernize the habitats. The nocturnal house is currently being rebuilt with a goal of opening in the spring. NA is next and that figures to be a long and expensive build (supposedly it is being based on the Heart of Africa section). It wouldn’t surprise me if the great ape piece of the Congo is on the list though. Clearly it is showing it’s age.
