That's the story I was looking for. I told it to my civics class years ago and want to hand the story off to another teacher who is teaching civics. My favorite of these stories. My ancestors were also Quaker abolitionists in the same general area. It's great to have the kids see someone tell a story like this that they recognize and like. My students loved it.

I thought it was interesting that in the beginning she said her grandmother was very liberal. My understanding was that most Quakers were very conservative, and helped the Republican party fight against slavery.

***** Not all slaves were of African descent in early US history to begin with. Many Europeans came across as slaves and/or indentured servants themselves. Yes, the indentured servants worked off their passage. Captured American Indians were kept as slaves as well. The Puritan culture of early US resulted in many slaves -regardless off their origin- freed well before the American Civil War (between North and South). Not sure of the specifics on the Deschanel relationship (slaver or not).

No, she read it correctly. The picture says it was demolished in 1898, that would be called "late 19th century". The 1800's are referred to as the 19th century, the 1900's as the 20th century, us in the 2000's live in the 21st century and so on.

Being older than "political-correctness" myself, I've never understood why being politically correct is so hard. Treat people with respect. Don't hurt or offend people. I find it a good way to live. Not a struggle at all. In fact, it seems much harder to hold those hard feelings toward others. I hope you heal.
