As a working professional audio engineer, I think these type of videos are gold and extremely helpful! Audio is kind of a forgotten art form.. People worry a lot about video but don't get to see how audio is 50% of the project.. that's until everything sounds bad and they realize that they need audio to be as solid as video, in order for the project to be good!! Thanks for making this guys! You are definitely reaching a lot of new people who might have not even thought of audio like this, changing perspectives and teaching about our craft! Excellent work!!!! Keep it up
Hi Dan! Thank you so much for saying that and I can only agree with you. Each time I’m out there recording sounds, I meet people who didn’t even thought about recording sounds or the audio engineer profession. We know that we aren’t reaching a huge audience but the people who find us or the people we meet along the way, are going to appreciate audio work. That’s what I can tell you. :)
I have to say as a first-time viewer to your channel that I was expecting you to have a minimum of a couple hundred thousand subscribers as the quality/presentation of this video is absolutely fantastic! Very well done; your captured sounds were also a pleasure to listen to and I actually just picked up my new Zoom F6 today thanks to your review!
Ah thank you so much for saying that and it means a lot! We really enjoy doing such videos and we are right now in Hong Kong recording new sounds. We did yesterday night a sound tour with a new video including some amazing spots. Hopefully we can publish the video already tonight.
The first ever notion of field recording was in a beautiful movie called "Lisbon story". It's amazing to hear that the city still sounds great. Thanks for the video!
Seeing you go into the laundromat with the Priezor was like a scene from Ghostbusters! Like you were searching for a paranormal presence! 🤣 Great video guys, please keep them coming!
Guys, I purchased your sound library a couple of years back.. It is an amazing library, beautifully curated (although downloading in bulk is a nightmare)... Thank you so much for everything! Also really nice video. Cheers :)
Wow, the content is way beyond my expectation. I've watched tons of video talking about condenser mics, dynamics mics and ribbon mics. Your video is the first video I watched containing demos of contact mic, parabola mic and EM listening antennas! What an adventure of sound recording! Enjoyed this video so much! Thank you!
Hi Jiahe! Thank you so much for watching and your honest feedback. We just love being out and put the microphones under real world test instead of hanging out in a room talking about it. If we can travel again with new equipment we make more videos like this for sure. Have you watched the contact microphone video from Hong Kong?
@@FreeToUseSounds I've been to ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-v9nrukWmYfw.html and it was another great adventure! I was actually looking for some demos of ZOOM F6, but your video really brought me into a whole new world! And your independent loyalty-free sound library is just brilliant!
You guys are so blessed to be able to film together and work on productions. That would be so much fun, I do everything on my own and it can get a little lonely at times. Thanks for the video. I have been watching a lot of your content so I can make a better quality purchase as I am seeking second hand. God bless Marty
Hi Marty. Thank you again and we have more videos coming up. We have been traveling the world together since 2015 and it was the best decision in our life. We also have a podcast series talking about how everything began.
If you get a chance anytime soon, i'd love to hear the parabolic aimed down a crowded sidewalk with people just walking by you. Not focusing on any specific conversation or anything, just the noise of people passing by. Thank you so much for all these recordings!!
I modified my Peak Design strap with three small modifications. 1. The plastic buttons for the quick disconnect system would catch on the strap because of the gaps between the webbing where it loops thru the mating connector. I wrapped a small piece of velcro around the webbing to keep the gap closed and this seems to work much better. 2. The plastic buttons were difficult to slide with dry hands. I installed a small rubber button foot on to each plastic button. 3. I removed the metal slide rings, as they had sharp edges that could scratch the Zoom F6 recorder.
Your audio’s always so clean and clear. What’s your post-processing workflow? I’ve been using one of the Zoom recorders with mic capsules, and as careful as I am recording, I always find I have to do a ton of work to isolate the sounds I’m interested in. You and Libby have a really great channel for recording enthusiasts...keep it up, it’s awesome!
Six MikeMike Hi Mike! I don’t have much post processing work to be honest all what I do is using a ftt filter to fit rid of the mic rumble in Adobe Audition and that’s normally it. I never record to high and make sure I don’t have any self noise in my ear coming from the mic. Do you want me to make a more in-depth video about that?
Free To Use Sounds yep, that’d be great, thank you. I’m really interested, especially with the F6, as I’m interested in upgrading to it and maybe something like the Rode NTG5.
Six MikeMike Before going with Rode you should look into the Audio Technica stereo microphones. I think it’s the 4025 I had my eyes on but then I bought the SAAM. Problem is wind so in windy situations I am pretty much doomed. So check out this mic with a Blimp and you have a nice setup.
Thank you so much for this beautiful video! This is the third time I watch the complete video and I just love it. You guys are the best! Thank you so much for this excellent content!
@@FreeToUseSounds thank you 🙏🏼. Yes, I always follow you and loved your two most recent videos. Hope you will continue to publish new material soon. I am getting into playing synths these days and hope to pick up your fantastic recordings soon 🤩
Really nice video with lots of good information. I genuinely laughed out loud at the "you don't sound crazy at all" line towards the end of the video. Keep up the great audio and cinematography work.
What you do is amazing, bring so many creative ideas to my mind and what could be possible. The only downside is that I am just a one-man person. Being able to produce something like a cinematic trailer with those sound effects and compilation as well as transition of footages to bring it to real life visually and auditory, it is AMAZING. I also agree with your opinion F6 does bring more motivation to work with. As a super novice, H6 or H8 would definitely suit my needs for podcast. But for outdoor and sound field, definitely F6, for sure. Thank you for bringing all these content and going out your way to capture it. I do like how the content microphone brings a whole new perspective from the parabolic microphone. I wish I could bring them all when travelling from place to place in my luggage.
Thank you so much for your kind words and so glad you found our video. The F6 is a great recorder but if you have any other kind of recorder, that shouldn't stop you. I started with an H1 and moved my way slowly up to the F6. I don't have the parabolic microphone anymore because one channel start failing. Also it doesn't had good wind protection.
A friend of mine gave it to me to try, it sounds really good. I don't really like the fact that you can't have control of the gain with the knobs, or am i missing something? Your channel is great btw!🎉
I’m into music production and am always looking for sounds and tones to sample and create rhythm with. I’ve definitely got my eye on that f6 since I heard about it through Curtis Judd. I was curious what contact mic is that? Can you post links to your equipment? Maybe you should do affiliate links so you can get a bit of commission for yourself! Thanks for the great content ✌️ peace from Oregon
TiredEyes Hi and thank you so much for watching! The link to the post is in the description and you find all the details about the equipment within the blog post. Plus you can download all sounds too! It’s the AKG C411 pp contact microphones. Just let me know if you have any more questions.
Hi, i have a zoom F4 saw your video on the F6 and hat it could do i love doing stealth recording but was hard to do with the F4. so Ive just ordered the F6 and the Bluetooth adapter and the ProTic bag you use ive already got my a good pair of phantom powered Lavalier mics, so when this lock down ends i can get out and do some stealth recordings ,oh by the way i'm 62 years young and love recording sounds. Love your channel keep up the great work and as i said last time you to keep safe.
ZOOM F6 IN 192 32 Bit is possible and I record with it since the beginning! All you need to do is go to the REC section and turn the LR track off! Have fun with the new Zoom F6!! :)
Nice. I'll stick with my F4 though. No need for 32bit and I actually prefer the form factor and connectors on the f4. I will say I built some custom XLR cables using some Belden Brilliance 8451 and Neutrik connectors. Very thin and light weight but excellent performance.
Well I'm almost certain you can do both. You can use the F6 as an external recorder or with the the right cable you can screw the camera on the plate that comes with the recorder and then record direct from the video mic or camera mic into the recorder.
Film Student Well I never used the Sound Devices in the past so I can’t have an opinion on it. I love Zoom products and the support they offer! I also started sound recording with a small Zoom H1 and never got disappointed. Also I wanted to record in 32 bit and with this recorder it’s possible.
Have you ever taken a 1/4” feed(s) from a sound board? Since it only has XLR inputs instead of combo inputs like other devices, I’m curious if line level can be sent and received through a male 1/4” to male XLR from the sound board to the F6 input(s) or is a DI box is required?
I did not use all channels at ones but sometimes I record with the Sennheiser MKH 8040 (Channel 01/02), the Geofon and the AKG C411pp at the same time. That makes it four channels. But I could use another pair of omnis. Maybe when I buy a microphone that requires four inputs, I probably would do it.
@@FreeToUseSounds bought it a few days ago. I wish there was a better program to sort through audio and use the metadata much better. Certain sounds are like looking for a needle-head in a haystack. I wish you could connect to the Zoom F6 to a phone and input keyword metadata to each sound clip that some sound cataloging software could use to find specific clips.
@@DavidGriffin Try ADSR Sample Manager I use it for SFX and its a great little program that can scan through thousands of sounds in seconds play them on the fly, drag them into a DAW and has a built in search that can find sounds and sort with out any special meta data at all. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2VaNjgOK-MQ.html
Hi there. Great video as always. Have you been getting any 'exceeding maximum input levels' errors on the F6 when recording louder sounds? I'm using Clippy XLR microphones which should not exceed the maximum input on the F6. Have replaced my unit but behaviour is the same, and Zoom who I'm in touch with are being vague. Cheers, Doug
Hi Douglas! Oh yes for example if I clapp my ends loud or a loud car, truck, train passes by I get the message on the screen. Not sure why it does it but yes I get this message. It doesn't hurt the recording so I kept ignoring it. Did you made a post in the Zoom F8, F4, F6 group on Facebook about it?
@@FreeToUseSounds Yeah I did and other people also are getting the same thing. I need to do some more tests to check what happens to the sound afterwards. It is kind of annoying but I'm willing to forgive if it doesn't hurt the sound. Have you recorded any thunderstorms with it yet? I worry if it can cope but it is winter here so haven't tested yet...
@@douglaslangley6703 After leaving Lisbon I have to look into the recordings. There wasn't really much thunder in Spain, Hong Kong or Thailand. Now I'm in La Reunion and also nothing.
@@FreeToUseSounds Hmm I just tested playing a cymbal right next to the microphones. At medium volume I was getting the message. I carried on until I was hitting it as hard as possible. No audible distortion on playback. Maybe it is a software problem and the message is triggering at the wrong time?
Very cool thanks for taking us all along, but I doubt that someone comes in the laundromat 2 or three times a day with pro recording gear to capture sound F/X, unless its you guys :-)
Nothing to worry about :) It's never too late. I just calculated it with 192kHz and we have about 23MB more per minute. I found this page for you where you can make more calculations if needed. www.colincrawley.com/audio-file-size-calculator/
I am in the prosess of trying out my Zoom F6 with my Sennheiser MKH 416/Ambient ATE 308 (Emesser) MS-stereo rig. The two microphones fits nicely in my Røde Blimp MK2, by the way. But I have a question about the track link settings. The user manual is not any god at this point. To me, it sounds like the F6 is using a kind of built in MS Matrix to make a on the fly stereo mix for the headphones, when the two mono tracks is linked together as a MS-stereo set in the menu. I want to have the raw, separated recordings from the two mics unaltered when I import them in to Pro Tools, to have the control that I want. I am not pleased with the recording when linking it as a normal Stereo microphone either. Its not sounding right to me. Two separate mono tracks, not linked sounds best. But then I have to set the recording level separately for the two channels. (And all the decoding is done in the DAW.) What are your experience at linking a MS-stereo set of microphones with the F6 Marcel? What is the best way to do it?
I haven’t looked into this yet but did you watched the video from Ian Smith? vimeo.com/453743055. It’s really good about MS recording and processing. Otherwise Facebook has the Zoom F8/F6 group. Maybe they can help you quicker than I.
@@FreeToUseSoundsThank`s. Ian`s video is perfect for those who want to know the basics of MS-stereo. But it does not answer my question. I have worked with MS-recordings since 2004, but this is the first time that I have to configure the recording equipment on my own. The first time I made a radio documentary using a MS-microphone, a sound technician even did all the post processing and editing for me. This is my first private setup, and I would love to get a processed mix to monitor the recording in my headphones, at the same time as I get a recording of the original unprocessed mono mid/side channels. I will try to post the question to the Facebook group.
As you are the masters of sound recordings I have one question: (I’m a complete newbie) For short films shooting which one should I go with: Tascam 70D or Zoom f6? I’m getting a used Tascam 70D for 225$ and Zoom F6 for 500$ Price wise I can buy both but I want to know which is better investment for small scale short films. I’ll be using it with a DSLM. Specifically Lumix S1. Thanks :)
That is a really nice camera and I personally never used Tascam and I have no intention of using these recorders. I like Zoom, I like the Zoom F6 and would always recommend it.
whab media you can sync it in post superb sound And you can record into the camera and the recorder at the same time and sync in post As the sound in the recorder are far superior to the shitty sound inside camera which has shity preamps But yeah you can also record only directly into the camera as well
Could the sound be clipped before going into the F6? With a wireless lav system for example. You can set gain at both transmitter and receiver. If the mic is too hot and the signal clips going into the transmitter, wouldn't the receiver send clipped audio to the F6 and wouldn't it be clipped at any level the F6 records it at? There is a way of having the clipped audio being "burnt in" to the signal chain?
Hi Marius! That is a very good question and I honestly haven't thought about it. I personally haven't used any wireless system yet but let me forward your question to a friend who knows the answer and I get back to you.
Hi Marius! Yes, if the signal is already distorted before it reached the F6, then this can't be fixed by the recorder. Its the same with cabled microphone. If the sound exceeds the SPL of a microphone, this sound is going to be distorted.
@@FreeToUseSounds yes, that makes sense. So the idea would rather be too record too soft and being able to raise the gain without introducing too much noise then?
@@mariusfinnstun In 32 bit float mode it really doesn’t matter where you have your gain set. It records natural with the sounds and later in post you can adjust the recordings.
Best ever? I wonder how you would compare it to the competition today. I am thinking of getting one if a good deal comes up. I currently enjoy the Tascam X8 and the Zoom H6, but I kind of like the F6 form factor and the timecode capability.
Hi Dikur! What sound example are you talking about in this video? The contact microphone and the electro magnetic field? Yes these are mono and you don't need to record that in stereo. But to get a stereo effect you can use the Haas stereo effect.
Bought an f4 about 6 months ago, and im off to japan to record some stuff to make an ambisonic library. Would you suggest upgrading to this for the safety of the 32bit float and app capability?
So you have an ambisonic mic I assume? Now that I have the Zoom F6 field recorder I'm not using the Zoom F8n anymore. Always prepare for the future. You can always export files lower but not higher.
@@FreeToUseSounds thanks heaps! Yup i'll be using the sennheiser ambeo. Going to wait until second order becomes more commercially available and then probably kick myself for upgrading to the f6! Haha thanks!
thanks for this. can i use the zoom f6 or the mixpre-3 ii with the rode video mic pro + via the 3.5 jack? are there limitations to this quality wise compared to using a xlr shotgun mic? thanks so much for your thoughts.
If you use the zoom f6 or mixpre for your rode videomic pro, u need a converter from 3.5mm to xlr and one that converts the voltage like rode vxlr+ so you dont damagr your mic!
@@FreeToUseSounds :: No worries, I had a inkling that would be the case, but since you two are actually out recording, thought it wouldn't hurt to ask. Keep on keeping one. It's fun watching people enjoying themselves so much. ~Cheers
Can you use the 192/32 to eliminate clipping, but easily put that file into something like Izotope to edit and export as a 44/16 wav file? Or can the F6 automatically do that for you? I would be a little concerned that it's the audio equivalent of 4k video - neither my computer or any software I have can actually play it!!!
Hi! Yes that is what the F6 can do for you. Eliminate clipping but only if the sounds you will record doesn’t extend the maximal input pressure of the microphones. For editing I use Audition and have no problems editing and exporting the files. I never used Izotope so I can’t give you an opinion on that sorry :(. Are you part of the Zoom F8, F6, F4 group on Facebook? You might find some useful help.
hey hello, zoom f6 headphone output value shows 15 ohms. What is the ohm rating of your headphones? and how did you make it work? I also have zoom f3, the headphone output is 15 ohm, can I operate it? Help meee :(
Hello Mustafa, I'm not entirely sure what specific issue you're encountering. Could you clarify what you mean by "how did you make it work?" Generally, any headphones should work fine. If you're using external microphones, remember to enable phantom power, as this is often a common oversight. If the problem you're experiencing is different, could you please provide more details? Understanding the exact nature of the issue will help me offer more targeted advice or solutions. Looking forward to hearing from you and helping you resolve this!
Thank you for your answer. First of all, I would like to state that I am an amateur. In the technical specifications of zoom f6, the impedance value is stated as 15 ohms. Zoom f6 specs: Output impedance 15 Ω or less If I'm not mistaken, you are using Sony MDR 7506. The impedance value of this headset is stated as 63 Ohms. I was wondering how you can power and get sound from the 63 ohm mdr7506 when the headphone output of Zoom f6 is 15 ohm. Or am I misunderstanding something and doing something wrong in the calculations?
@@zenbil61 Ah now I see what you mean. You know, if you head over to Sound On Sound Magazine or Search for Headphone impedance for zoom h6 it will bring you to a similar article. Not the F6 but you will get the idea behind it.
Amazing love love love Can you please tell me why do you needed so many different type of recorders If I wanted to get into field recording, will it be good enough just one of the Zoom F6 sand which mic would you recommended for me to start with Looking forwards to hear your advices Subscribe like and notify Veasna
Hi! I need them because I record in different situations all the time. The F6 is great and you should watch the video about the Audio Technica 4025 I made. This is a great allrounder.
SVBTIL for home recording? Can you tell me what you mean? For me it’s better because if I’m on the streets recording traffic and a motorbike comes by very fast and I don’t have time to regulate the gain, the recording is much likely distorted. Not with 32 but as long as the pressure is under the max microphone SPL
