Here's a look at the very cool new Zoom H1 Essential 32-Bit Float audio recorder that I use in most of my professional videos. I got mine from Sweetwater sound for $99. I think it performs pretty awesomely for the price. Listen with headphones and you'll hear the improved definition in sound over other devices used in this video.

If you’re the kind of person that likes to fidget with it, then you will hear some noise. Basically the key to these things has always been to hold them firmly. For my purposes using a lapel mic really solves the issue totally.

Did you test it for recording quiet audio like nature?

@@Mr.Pickles.Purrspective Good question. We've noticed our phone records nature sounds as good as $200-$300 handhelds minus handling noise of any measure. We live along a river so we've tested our phone on bug noise,wind noise,the distant train,etc. Plus it records in stereo or mono.

I’ve got an H1 Essential on the way. I’m going to use it for recording gigs, some full electric with two drummers, some acoustic gigs, excited to see how it does. Thank you for the review! Very thorough!

GoPro was far better outside than the new zoom without the mic plugged in. I couldn't hear any difference inside when you put both Zooms toward your face. On tbhe test at just past 10 minutes in the video, the newest one was slightly better than the old zoom, but they were close. The music at the last test sounded good. Also, you were wearing flip flops at the beginning as they sounded horrible thru the GoPro. Hope you are doing well.

Zoom is definitely crispy and clean, gopro is muffled.

I bought this H1e and I am an absolute noob. Wondering if you can give me pointers. If I am recording an interview, should I switch to "Mono"? When I am recording "ambient" sounds, should I stick to "stereo"?
