I'm just about to purchase one of these and your videos have made me feel so confident that I am ready to use it. Thank you for the effort and integrity. I've performed all my life but recording is new to me and I am all at sea. Most of the tutorials assume one has so much base knowledge to draw from and don't build it in any way. Thank you again. I’ve been a recording artist more than anything else. LOVE recording. The Zoom has so many recording options/equipment. The Zoom H5 is very portable, has great sound and easy to use. Just wrap your head around the menu system and go from there. The good thing about recording is that you can always re-record. I like to record a clean recording to an SD card with a Zoom recorder (very light to no effects) then edit the .wav files on my computer adding effects and edit. The Zoom H5 also records really well with a mixer using the effects sparingly, adding when you edit. To many or turned up effects can ruin your recording fast. The effects will over power your recording and even lead to sound degradation. Experiment until you get a mix that sounds good to you. Good luck on your endeavors and if I can be of assistance give a shout.

wanted to offer a little insight. Use a set of earbuds and move the H5 around when recording acoustic. There is a huge difference in location and a set location doesn't always work better. You can plug in an electric piano or just record stereo with the X/Y mics. I have a Zoom H5 play list setup that may offer a little more for you. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-k5JCNJS-4os.html

For what your trying to do. You would be better off with dedicated DAW with iOS recording. You can pick one of these up for about 1/2 the price you would pay for the H5. I’m using a FocusRite Scarlett 18i8 on this video which shows how to do this using an iPad Pro (same ios as your iphone) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-P9XxT83AmfQ.html You can pick up a 2 channel Focusrite for $100? amzn.to/2E9gDWH. This will do what you are trying to do without all the headache of trying to rig something. Your going to want to do a little research for RECORDING iOS as that is the operating system for your iPhone/iPad.

Helpful video. Is it possible to overdub multiple times on the L/R track (or any of the tracks)? For example, I want to record a small part of a vocal on the L/R track, then afterwards, I want to overdub another small part of vocal on that same track, and so on. Essentially, I would be building a vocal step by step, recording about 10 seconds at a time, (all on the same track), until I have a 3 min vocal. I ask because I know I would quickly use up the 4 mono tracks using this method and I wouldn't want to have to bounce the tracks every they filled up.

Sol Omen you can read the OVERDUB section in the H5 Manual starting on page 33. You might want to look at another recorder designed for intensive overdubbing like the Zoom R16 amzn.to/2AwzHgu or a DAW recording device like the Focusrite Scarlett amzn.to/2Knzk7s

Hi Deb, while owning an H5 since 5 years never needed overdubbing, still good to know how it's done, thanks for this. Yet I have a question you might know to answer before I buy the lavalier microphones. Can the H5 be used as 4 simultaneous track recorder. Means splitting the capsule L and R into 2 x mono and adding the TRS input 1 and 2 to have 4 mono microphones time synched? I was thinking 2 sets of the newly released of Røde Wireless GO II as Mic. In my case audio from 4 microphones on 4 humans beings would join in one H5. It became a puzzle to solve.

You can re-record with the l/r capsule. To do that you have to move the tracks you first recorded to the 1/2 pair. On the overdub screen you select the l/r file to be None and select the 1/2 file to be the one you recorded with the capsule mics. Then you can playback from 1/2 and record again on l/r with the capsule mics.

Let's say I have a left and a right line from a synth going into 1 & 2 respectively. Assuming that will take up two tracks, can I then bounce those two to a single track or two other tracks and overdub using the same 1 & 2 channels again so I can improvise over the first recording? Does a track correspond to a channel? i.e. L channel + R channel = two tracks? thanks.

Deb, help me with two problems with my H5: 1. I’m using a Shure m58 with standard cable to input 1/2 and Audio-Technica headphones connected to the phone-jack (upper lefthand side of the H5). I have to set the input-volume dials for 1/2 to nearly 7 just to hear myself through the headphones and I hear an annoying “hiss”. Why can’t the unit be more sensitive and I be able to hear from 1-6???? I thought for sure that it would be a beautiful sound that I could hear, crisp and without hiss and at a lower input-volume setting (1-6)? Am I connecting incorrectly? Please help me!
@DebErney
@DebErney 5 лет назад
Right off the bat it sounds like your headphones are connected to the external line in. There are two lines in. One line in at top left of mic capsule and another line in top left of the H5 right above the volume. I think the out is green, the in is red? Check page 5 of your manual.
@DebErney
@DebErney 5 лет назад
Another thing is that Shure microphones tend to have low volume, which is why they are so good at deflecting unwanted sound. Try recording with the onboard mic and see what happens. If that works I’d change out cable than microphone. Bad cables and connections can cause problems.

Dear Deb, 1. I have a Zoom H4n Pro which is relatively easier to do MTR using the only built-in L/R mic, however I was so much frustrated by the error prompt “the device is using too much power”, and it was still not working properly even after I purchased the lighting to 3.0 USB camera adapter from the Apple Store. I haven’t found any successful experiments on RU-vid about the usage of IOS devices and Zoom H4n Pro. After plugging in this lightning usb to camera adapter with external power bank/power supply into my iPhone, the audio and video are not syncronized (about 3 seconds slower), and the sound pitch had been turned lower than normal. 2. I would like to do overdub mainly by downloading free music covers in WAV files from the internet or emailed from my friends. I normally transferred files into MTR folder in Zoom H4n Pro where I do overdub via computer files transfer, again with Wav format. I’ve successfully done MTR using Zoom H4n Pro. Can Zoom H5 work the same way by transferring files from the computer into Zoom H5 MTR folder (not the pre self-recorded Wave files from the handy recorder)? 3. Can H5 connect to iPhone while filming for better audio quality? Have you ever plugged in iPhone with Zoom H5? Is it working? Does it pop up with “too much power” error message? 4. Can overdubbing be completed by using only the included detachable L/R built-in mics or an external mic to plug in XLR is a must as you demonstrated in your video? Now I am thinking to sell my Zoom H4n Pro and buy a new Zoom H5 as H5 has a line-out feature to connect to the camera with mic input (I haven’t purchased any cameras yet but still using my iPhone to do videos). Many thanks from Paul - Sydney Australia PS: you are very helpful in this video tutorial.

None of these items are designed to be used the way you are trying to use them, thus they are not going to work properly. You are going to have the same problems with the Zoom H5. There are dedicated mics you can get for your iPhone that attaches to the lightening port for recording. Shure has one for about $130? amzn.to/2zFJMEQ If you are going to buy a camera make sure you have the proper input for the Zoom H4n. The H4n will work perfectly to supply great sound with a camera that has audio input. for iOS recording you really need dedicated items designed to work with your iPhone that have thier own power supply. IKMultimedia has a bit of equipment designed to do what your wanting. You can look at these here amzn.to/2PfosuI

I know you didn’t create the features, but can you help me understand why there is a L & R to record both external mics on top even though they record together with no separation? Or can you arm/record say just L? Your video has really helped my decision to purchase this over the H1n. Thank you for the effort you put into making this!

A Simple Chat there are two mic capsules, hence the X/Y recording. You are recording from the left mic and from the right mic. There is a 3.5 plug in that can be used to record instead of the mics.
@SKimbrough
@SKimbrough 5 лет назад
Deb Erney Thank you for responding quickly. I realized that in my excitement I may have not been very clear about the recording. I understand there are two mic capsules but I wondered if you have the ability to choose which capsule (L or R) to record to. After viewing your video again, it appears that even when you press L, both L & R become armed for recording at the same time. I suppose I was confused as to why there isn’t just one button marked “L/R” since there is no option to record either independently. The versatility does appear to be much better than that of my Zoom H1n. Does this sync easy with video when you import into Logic or Final Cut X? Thanks again for being so patient with a newcomer like me.

Do you have a way of multitracking/overdubbing that only needs the XY mics? I want to record one track. Then I want to play it back through the H5 and record again via the XY mics. This presently does not work for me. The whole idea of using a handy recorder was to avoid clutter. I may as well go back to my laptop + external sound + microphone +audacity which can do what I want if I don't mind the clutter. I tried renaming the first track to make it look like it came from the USB mics but so far this strategy has not worked.
@DebErney

Have you read the OVERDUB section in the manual (Page 33)? You should be able to overdub just the onboard mics.
@user-de6vj6kx7d
@user-de6vj6kx7d 2 месяца назад
@@DebErney Thanks Deb. I did find a way of overdubbing with the onboard mics. I connected my H5 to a PC and renamed the XY files to input 1 and 2 files. This may not be the only way to do it but it worked for me. In time I may end up using better methods. I have been making multi track recordings for years using a laptop, an M-audio usb audiophile soundcard and Audacity software. Using this setup makes the process child's play. The method has disadvantages though. There is too much clutter with all the equipment and the laptop's fan can spoil the recording. The environment is hardly conducive to good music making. This is why I am trying the H5. Presently I find it a bit fiddly but I like how I can produce recordings with one H5 (and a set of headphones if I multi-track). The recording quality is pretty good but Zoom could have done far better with the overdubbing interface. I think my difficulties are that I have been spoilt with the Audacity method. I will persevere though.
@Doremina
@Doremina 6 лет назад
do you think this gadget is more useful than an audio bracket/ sound card?
@DebErney
@DebErney 6 лет назад
Mina168 depends on what you want to do. If you have experience recording and want to venture to the next step I would go for a good sound card or DAW (digital audio workstation/interface) like the Focusrite Scarlett series. amzn.to/2CX7Z8w. If your just starting out recording I would go with the Zoom h5 or Zoom R16. amzn.to/2CYnhcY. You cant beat stand alone recorders for ease of use and setup. Hook up instrument, mic, hit record and you are recording. High quality .wav files that can be transported, SDCard, and edited with DAW software. Also this recorder has basic USB setup for easing you into USB recording if you don’t have usb recording experience. With the USB/DAW/Computer recording there is a pretty steep learning curve with setting up computer, sound card, DAW and software. My first DAW was a PreSonus Firebox. It was so difficult to setup and get working with my computer that I stopped recording until I bought another stand alone, Tascam Portastudio DP-24 amzn.to/2oGe5WC. I like to record a scratch take with a Zoom R24 or Zoom H5 with guitar, vocal, drums (strong beat throughout for easier editing). I then take these .wav files on the SDCard and import them into Logic Pro X for mixing, re-recording, adding to and editing with a Focusrite Scarlett 18i8. Thats my process.

I am about to buy H5. I am indulging in research at the moment. Today's confusion, can these 4 sound tracks be processed and tweaked on PC separately and then merge? Or these come out as one track? When H5 is hooked on to the camera as interface, is it recording as one track or four?
@DebErney
@DebErney 3 года назад
Yes to all the above. LOVE MY H5 and I use it in all the ways your wanting to. In Multi-track rec mode the tracks do record as separate .wav files on SD card. I bring them from SD to iMac for editing. When hooked up to camera audio input you will get the stereo track along with your video unless you also have the unit recording to h5 SD card.
