I was listening to this video and during the process of listening to it and setting up my zoom, the audio started coming out of the zoom rather than the headphones in my computer haha. Good video and many Thanks!
Good video, but one small correction for those interested in recording on their PC with this: Stereo doesn't combine the two inputs into one. You can still record the inputs separately. It just means it doesn't include the built-in microphones (or whatever other attachment you might have) and it only records inputs 1 and 2. Also, many DAWs actually prefer Stereo mode than Multi-track mode in terms of compatibility / drivers.
Chromatic Progress - does it mean if want to use H5 as sound source for iPhone videos (with USB interface) it would not let me record both built-in microphones and two external microphones (on inputs 1 and 2) at the same time?
Sorry, can't really help you with that. I wish I knew but I don't have an iPhone to test. If it supports Multi-track drivers you will be able to do so but I'm not sure it does. Maybe look up some info on the Zoom website about that.
jorge I have used it in a setup to record the x/y or shotgun mic alongside an additional mic into my iPhone and iPad. I have found it to be extremely buggy at times though. Today I tried recording vocals using only an external mic but for reasons unknown I couldn’t get “Multitrack” to work and had to go with “Stereo”. This was using my MacBook and Ableton.
Wow, this was great! Thanks for showing all those different menus in the first 1/2 of the video. It's nice that you can run the H5 on battery or some USB power from another device like a laptop. Also like the different Compressor and Limiters options.
This was quite helpful. Thank you for showing real applications because I will be using my MBP as well but haven’t seen any videos of people discussing the audio interface aspect. I was considering the purchase but now I know I’ll get this instead of the Zoom H1n.
The H5 in USB audio interface mode sounds like garbage, nothing at all like in standalone mode. Design flaw makes the artifacts in high end unworkable. Zoom's response to this is that in standalone mode it "over performs", which is ridiculous. Bottom line: you can't use an H5 to record anything with any top end in interface mode and expect it to sound acceptable. Google it.
Why is this bad? Using the H5 in USB interface mode sounds noticeably inferior and artifacty compared to as a straight recorder. Since it is being marketed as having this interface function it's quite dismaying to find out that you can't use it as such without accepting this inferior audio, which, again, is not the same quality as in standalone mode. It's not just lesser, it's unusable. Zoom says, yes, using it as an interface gives this poor result, can't be addressed or fixed. www.gearslutz.com/board/newbie-audio-engineering-production-question-zone/983937-zoom-h5-audio-interface-problem.html www.gearslutz.com/board/music-computers/1217885-h5-usb-mac-audio-interface-audio-rate-conversion-distortion.html Here is Zoom's response, with a scan of that response below it: "Unfortunately, when using the H5 as an audio interface the audio quality is not as good as standalone.Specifically, there is a warble, or noticeable degradation. This is a design limitation of the H5. It is not really a bug or a problem that can be solved. More just that's the quality of the unit as an audio interface." Not putting this in the docs or letting the retailers know was ridiculous. imgur.com/a/pQQn1P9
I followed your instructions and the only thing I need to know is how you get to the screen on the laptop?. I’m not that great in computers. Thank you for your video, now I know how to hook up the Zoom H5.
WOW! THE STYLE OF THIS VIDEO WAS WONDERFUL. THE FIRST OF ITS KIND FOR ME. I LIKE THE CAMERA EFFECT WITH THE MUTED COLORS, THE ARRANGEMENT OF THE THINGS ON THE DESK. NICE! THE AUDIO WAS VERY CLEAR, TOO. I DID ALSO BUY A ZOOM H5 BUT AM HAVING PROBLEMS IT WORKING WITH MY PC DESK TOP COMPUTER. WHEN I SET IT TO THE USB THEN AUDIO INTERFACE SETTINGS, ZOOM CAN NOT RECORD! IT CAN ONLY RECORD ONCE OUT OF THE USB MODE. DOES THIS SUPPOST TO HAPPEN? I AM USING A LAVALIER MIC ATTACHED TO THE ZOOM. I TESTED ZOOM WITH OBS AND WHEN I PLAY IT BACK, THE SOUND SOUNDS MECHANICAL. WHAT COULD BE THE PROBLEM? THANK YOU FOR ANY ASSISTANCE.
I downloaded those because I am trying to do multitrack mode interface using the 1 and 2 inputs for livestream with OBS. I figured out all the settings and it is all coming out in stereo in the zoom H5 - but once I get sound in the PC it sums the stereo into both channels on each side (like a stereo monos instead of L and R). The multi track Asio driver didn’t work at all, I had no sound. The regular driver or no driver at all but as I explained, it’s not real stereo. Any suggestion?
Thanks for the informative video. I want to be able to record both the built-in XY Stereo mic and also a mic plugged into one of the Zoom's XLR inputs, on separate tracks into a DAW. Can this be done with the H5? Thanks!
Hello. Can't use H5 as audio interface with Cakewalk. It does'n appear in the input list (under divices), either in stereo or multitrak mode. It appears in Audacity and also in Cubase, but not in Cakewalk. Any suggestion?
I was able to record using Reaper with the XLR 1 & 2 inputs. But I could not get to work the XY mic, which I don't miss because you get a much better recordings with the XLR mics.
My RANE MP2015 DJ Mixer outputs 10 channels of audio via USB. Will this recorder allow me to conect to the USB of the mixer and select the channels I would like to record?
Thanx for video. May I record guitar via "line in" using as audio interface? Do I need a battery to use Zoom as audio interface with condenser microphone (phantom power)?
my question also: within the manual says no bus power with phantom power but…they omit that information from the spec the sneaky feckers. Though not the end of the world, slightly annoying as zoom comes across as intentionally hiding this and look how that goes for them: for all the talk that's out there about the h5, you won't find mention of this usb bus power/48v issue anywhere. Not altogether villainous, but a bit unnecessarily cynical
Hey Great video. I'm trying to use my zoom h5 as audio interface for a xlr mic. I use QuickTime to record my audio, I am able to record sound in stereo, however on monitoring only left side gets audio. I am trying to record on multi track but it does not record any audio in Quicktime
hi there!!i have the same problem...have you solved it? it records on xy capsule on pc...but when i put a mic with xlr the zoom takes the sound i can hear it on zooms headphones but the pc does not get the sound i cant understand
@@dimitrisgeorgakis3808 Yes when you connect XL you should first see the red lights on 1 and 2 on. Then press menu got to In/Out then In1/2 Mono Mix, then turn it on. This should solve the problem and on then on main screen you should now see both L and R moving if you speak into your XLR mic
is it ok to used this connection and connect my Rode NTG3 to get very hi quality podcast, and skype sound. would like a pro setup for fb live and skype lessions I do. any advice for maintaining highest Quality
I have the problem that my recorder does not show up as a driver in my Macbook when I press the 'SD card reader'. So I have to always take out the card, put it in the computer and transfer files like that. Do you have an idea why this happens? I read somewhere that the new MacOS updates don't support the Zoom recorders.
yes, that might be an MacOS issue ... but also with other card readers ... they don't show up with all the other drives, you might have to look (click on) your machine name location in the sidebar of the finder ... there you might find the SD-Card listed ... let me know if that works
hi, i got a mac and i hate it that when i plug in my head phone it kidnaps my sound systems so i cant change it to the iMac speakers, when i use the zoom i believe you can now pick audio output from the volume icon, right? and one i did get one just for headphones with a volume Knob but it was too low, can you use it to amplified headphones?
can i use this h5 like a pc microphone when iam conected in skype 4 example?. Can i conect the h5 to my computer to talk in real time a meeting? Thanks
When I do exactly what you are showing in the video, my computer still records the sound of a video via the computer's microphone, instead of my H5. At the same time, when my computer makes a sound, it comes out via the H5 instead of the computer's speakers. I need it exactly the other way round (microphone=H5, loudspeakers=computer). Can you help me with adjusting the settings to make it work the way I need it?
hi sir can you help me with my H5? the problem is when i use xlr my computer doesnt get any sound, but with the 3.5 line in it does get sound. thank you
you mean when you use it as normal recorder an not using it as audio interface? ... yes, the rec button also stops the recording ...you can't control the anything with the buttons tho' when you use it as audio interface
Thanks a lot for this! I need to ask you something. The thing is that i need to record one instrument, just like you used one mic (i use Logic pro), but when i select multitrack my DAW doesn't recive the signal of the imput instrument, it doesn't happen with the front mics on multitrack mode or with the inmput instrument when i select stereo, in those cases i can see the signal on Logic.Am i beening clear?? haha my english is not the best. Any advice? Thanks!
Hey ... sure thing... Did you select the right input on the track in Logic Pro? Because the inputs show top as 4 separate inputs and of course input 1 + 2 are standard and are the front mics of the H5
Man, you saved my life haha i was puting imput 1 on Logic, i didn't know that it was for the front mics. I selected imput 3 and it works!!! im so happy thans a lot!
I was wondering if you can connect your zoom h5, to an external audio interface. What I meas is using the H5 as microphone, kinda funny but I got an audio interface and the zoom, what I'm actually missing is another mic, but I feel like the zoom h5 is a good enough recorder for my needs. Hope someone can help me know, there's nothing related to my issue on the web.
well, you could connect the line out of the H5 to the line-in of your audio interface but I guess that might not be the best audio quality ... on mac (that's what I use) you can connect multiple USB-Audio interfaces and can choose (in LogicPro for example) which interface/input you use for recording things
