Professional musician does basic tutorial on how to quickly start recording with the Zoom H5 recorder. He also performs tests on how the distance between the acoustic instrument (violin) and the recorder affects the quality of the recording. Sound on the RU-vid videos is very important, so learning the basics of the good recording technique is very important!

Well, you better to put the Zoom in the 'overhead' position, just reference mic setting from orchestra recording session. High frequency is directional, and you want to pick up high frequency from above the sound hole on your violin.
@normanspurgeon5324

I thought that you sounded best at the closest range- 3-4 feet. I think you might plan a video with some different microphones, and hear the results. I believe there is a great difference between the dynamic mic, and a condenser mic, as far as placement goes. I've never tried a ribbon mic,but I understand they are very sensitive and realistic, which might be valuable for violin. I love the zoom, but it behooves one to use higher quality mics.

Hi my friend your review is very helpful (and your violin playing is very good :)). Just wonder if you would consider doing a comparison between Zoom H4n/H5/H6 and Shure Motiv M88, the latter of which is one that I'm using, but I'm considering buying the former if the quality of Zoom's recording would be even better.

Hello, thank you so much for this video! I am a singer, and I just bought a Zoom H5 but I cannot manage to make good recordings. When I sing low notes the sound is correct but when I sing high notes the sound gets really changed and horrible, no matter how far away I put my Zoom H5. Do you know what I can do about it? Thank you in advance!

Great video series, excellent playing, subscribed! Two questions: 1) Is it possible to record with a Zoom H5 using 2 external mics AND the built-in pair of mics? Or only one pair or the other? 2) Can you explain better how to set the gain levels? I am using 2 Neumann U87ai mics as externals, and in order to not exceed -12 (as per my understanding of the Zoom manual), in a room of about 12 sq. meters, or about 120 sq. feet) I seem to have to keep the gain below 5. I am playing bass flute, and don't understand this as the sound of the instrument is very suave-as compared to C flute or violin for example. THANK YOU for these videos!
@theviolintech7632
@theviolintech7632 2 года назад
Yes, you can use the external microphones together with the build in microphone. You have to enable that in the settings. As far as the levels are concerned I wouldn’t worry about not exceeding -12 db. I like to aim at around -6 db. There might be a little mor “hiss” from the preamps but the sound is more present. Don’t be afraid to experiment, set things up based on what sounds good to you not what the manual says. Every room is different and every instrument will record differently as well. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Do you mean feedback? This is when the sound is coming from the same equipment and then repeating itself over and over again. Not very pleasant! To stop it either reduce the volume of the recorder, the speakers or move further away.

Thanks so much for this very helpful video! I just purchased the H5 and am totally new to recording. I was wondering what settings do you use to get the best sound? For me right now my sound isn't as clear as I want it to be. Do you use the comp/Limiter? If so, do you use Studio or Vocal? Do you use Raw or Stereo? Also, what do you set the line out level too? I'm just recording right now in a small room space using audio interface. Thanks so much!
@theviolintech7632
@theviolintech7632 3 года назад
Hi, congrats on getting new equipment. I think that the basic stereo setting should give you what you need for clarity. Limiters are there so your recording doesn’t get to loud or soft but don’t really affect clarity. I think the biggest difference will be how close you set your microphone. In some rooms you might get as close as 2 feet air about 50cm to get more sound definition. Good luck with experimenting and have some fun!

Hiya mate.. Just one more tip for you... If you upload to RU-vid in 1080p they'll compress your videos with an AVC codec and the sound (and video) gets very squashed!.. render out your videos in max sound quality... but in 2k (or 4k ) resolution... Use Handbrake to optimise the file size without loosing quality...then when you upload 2k RU-vid will encode the video using the VP9 codec and the quality will be wayyyy better... there's a little tip that took me a year or so to figure out..haha Regards and best of luck with the channel

Have you tried the XY 6 microphone with the H5? I wish it came with that mic instead from the very few sound comparisons I have heard. It's slightly bigger and can be set in 120 degrees too where this mic cannot.
@theviolintech7632
@theviolintech7632 3 года назад
According to my research the internals of the H5 and H6 (mainly preamps) are identical ,so the sound quality that you can hear on the H6 can be replicated on the H5 with the H6 capsule. the 120 degrees is very helpful with recording an ensemble, think of it as a wide angle lens on a camera - you want to stay close and capture a wider perspective, but for single instrument it wouldn't make a significant difference.

Hi. I'm recording using Zumh5 too. When using open-string e-string I was a hollow sound. Can you tell me why the ringing sound is being recorded?
@theviolintech7632
@theviolintech7632 3 года назад
Hi, it seems that when you are getting some hollow sound it might be due to the acoustics of the room you are in and the microphone placement. I have one place in my studio that sound is super weird and not pleasant and as soon as I move to the other side of the space the sound is fine. let me know if that helps. The other thing would be to make sure that your recording levels are not to high - that will make the crackling sound when you play loud.

I notice the room noise most the further away from the mic, whether it's because of the room opening up at that point or because of computer noise behind it, but it would be easy to remove that noise in editing. This was the video that helped me figure that out when I was editing my videos (I used Audacity): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rWbxyshpnbQ.html. The other sound editing I did with the quartet videos was to amplify the sound. I just selected the portion of the sound I wanted to amplify and selected amplify in the effects menu.

@@alexsun1230 here is what I learned so far. Rode nt 4 can be self powered with a battery and that should give you good enough signal to record directly to your computer. The question always is how good is your sound card does it add much noise or not. You could get the Rode first and see how it goes. If you find that there is some noise then you could get an usb audio interface or zoom recorder. Good luck with your projects.

A lot of depends on the size of the room as well, also from what I recall there is a back up track recording function on the zoom that records 12 db's softer in addition to the regular levels. so check your files. The same recording will have few versions on the memory card, some normal level and some very quiet. I am hoping this helps.
